    There is an interesting fact about Simeon Sakskoburggotski (yes, that's his legal name as a commoner), previously Simeon II., the former and last Tsar of Bulgaria from 1943 to 1946. After the fall of the iron curtain, he returned to Bulgaria, founded a (liberal, democratic) political party, won an election and served as Prime Minister of Bulgaria between 2001 and 2005. So he is the only monarch in history who, after his abdication, became the democratically elected leader of his country again. I think that's pretty cool.

    I'm British and I'm not a monarchist, however, I and even the republicans of Britain deeply respected Elizabeth. Some for her personality, some for her non-interventionalist approach, personally because it did actually feel like she served the nation; particularly because she served as a mechanic in WW2 at age 14.
    I didn't particularly care for prince Phillip as a person but I was disappointed to see some of the disrespect people gave him after his death since he also served the royal navy during WW2.

    Does anyone remember those memes that started emerging a while back that made it seem like Elizabeth II would live forever, well to be honest I started believing them because she always seemed like she had the energy of someone a third of her age, so hearing this news today was shocking to say the least, she embodied absolutely everything that put the 'Great' in Great Britain, hard work, dedication, service, loyalty, humour, love, compassion she embodied it all and so much more and may she rest in peace. My late father said to me not long after Prince Philip passed away that the death of Prince Philip would accelerate her death for lack of a better phrase and I distinctly remember saying to his face "I don't believe you.", well it turns out he was right, at least she has finally been reunited with the person who stood by her side through the best and the worst of times for nearly 75 years.

    I'm a bit surprised. As an American Black Man and a fan of History, I'm saddened at the passing of the Queen. No one is perfect, but she was a human being. And that means respecting her passing and her life first. And then we (as a people/society) can go back and look at her life and her actions.
    But what surprised me is how many people of color are HAPPY that she's passed away. This bothers me for a few reasons. Now I respect everyone's opinion and feelings. But I also believe that people are judging her for being the Queen of an era long gone. That some folks are judging her for decisions that probably weren't hers to make or were the "norm" of the time. That doesn't make certain actions or results excusable or even acceptable. But context is key for everything and I feel that some context is being missed out with some folks who are criticizing the late Queen really harshly right now.
    Mind you, most of this harsh criticism is coming from Twitter and I know most people don't take Twitter seriously, but still. Seeing the backlash caught me off-guard. But in the end, time will tell, how the future and History judges Queen Elizabeth.

    • @Petrico94
      @Petrico94 2 года назад +12

      Regardless of background, what does anyone gain from her passing? The British colonies are free now so the status of a constitutional monarch somewhere else is whatever, she's a figure head so it's not like she had all that much power in these decisions, many of these colonies are doing great or have their personal problems, the PM just got replaced but no one is discussing the actual government workings going forward, so why celebrate a meh if long lasting queen over the monarchs that oversaw the start of those colonies and are long dead. Ya, screw Twitter and anyone celebrating a rulers death just because she's old enough to be at the tail end of these events. And like most monarchs there's a line of succession at all times to swiftly replace her meaningless title so this doesn't make the UK more democratic or suddenly give North Ireland back, it's a regular funeral anyone could see coming.
      Just more efforts to look like they're fighting oppression (mocking a 96 year old woman with their internet access) instead of being active in their community or pointing out the current real problems that colonization has caused. That's also assuming these people actually live in affected countries and not just other people in the west who are benefiting from Britain's past exploits just as much.

    A while back, I did a chart of medieval inheritence for my family (being from Northern Germany, the same male-preference primogeniture as House Windsor), and discovered that I am the heir of all my eight great-grandparents.
    And there's even a great obvious succession war in it, with my paternal and maternal cousins fighting over inheritence of my maternal grandfather's old "estate" after my death. Funny situations can come out of that. I should use that for some medieval feud story.

      @Yora21 2 года назад +2

      @@untruelie2640 It depends on region. In South Germany, splitting the inheritance among all sons was common, as it had been with the Frankish kings.
      In Northern Germany, there was a tradition that the oldest son inherits all the land in one piece. While this is no longer the case in German law, family farms in the North still tend to be much larger than in the South.
      The largest farms are all in East Germany, because all land had been publically owned and collectivized during communism until the 90s, so the traditional family farms no longer exist. The next largest right after that are Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen.

    Interesting thing to note, Elizabeth II and Emperor Showa both ascended their thrones at the same age, 25, and both are the longest reigning monarchs of... most of their respective nations (many of the late Elizabeth II's realms only became sovereign states part way through her reign, so their time as colonies or protectorates is not counted) . So they would've shared an almost identical length of reign if Elizabeth died earlier or the late emperor lived longer, since he died aged "only" 87.
    Another thing to note, being a divorcee is not nor has it ever been an impediment to being the monarch of the United Kingdom, as George I had divorced his wife, Sophia Dorothea of Celle, in 1694 and acceded to the throne unimpeded (except for the contests of the Jacobites, but that ended up going nowhere). The now former impediment was about being a divorcee, having an *alive* former spouse and attempting to marry, or marry someone who themselves had a former, still living spouse. Funny enough, Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson (technically Wallis Warfield, she changed her name back to her maiden name in May 1937) would have actually been able to marry if they waited, since her first husband died in 1950 and her second husband died in 1958.

    Let's lighten the mood slightly (that's what the Queen would've wanted):
    The UK panel quiz show QI once pointed out a few years ago that there's a guy in Oregon named Wesley Berger who was at the time 305th in line to the throne. So they joked that 304 people would have to die before the world can finally have a real Burger King
    In the same segment they noted that if the UK adopted absolute primogeniture during Queen Victoria's time, then after she died the crown would've passed to her eldest daughter Victoria. She would in turn die not long after, which would've passed the crown to Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany. That would've made WW1 very weird indeed. I have a feeling plenty of weird things like that would've happened if you applied that rule retroactively

    The reason members of the royal family use Duke/ Duchess instead of Price/ Princess, is due to ranking. A Prince is just a title, with no real bennefit, a Duke is a rank, that traditionally came with land from which you can generate income. As a result, a Rank of Nobility (Duke, Earl etc) is considered more prominent than a generic Prince. The exeption is the Prince of Wales, as Wales is a Principality.

    Random fact: William III and Mary II were not the only joint rulers through marriage in English history.
    Mary I married Phillip II of Spain and when they wed, it was agreed that they both rule as King and Queen. When Mary died in 1558 Phillip lost his title.
    So technically England has had a King Phillip.

    • @TK-oj2ml
      @TK-oj2ml 7 месяцев назад

      Well, like you said, Philip II of Spain was King of England because he married Mary and Parliament did make an Act that specifically said his right to be king came only through and because of the marriage. And so when Mary died, he lost the right to rule as king of England
      But in the case of Will and Mary, they were two grandchildren of Charles I, he had married Mary 12 years before, when she was still a princess, her uncle Charles II was still on the throne, and then he was "invited" by British political and religious leaders to "invade" England. After that he asked Parliament to declare him a king in his own right, not just a consort, they agreed and so the couple were crowned as joint rulers at the same time
      So imo only Will and Mary II were only real joint rulers in that they were crowned king and queen in their own right, not by through marriage, and most importantly, William continued to reign as King alone until he passed away, unlike Philip who ceased to be King of England by law

    I don’t anticipate an issue with Catherine being called Princess of Wales, as William and Catherine’s popularity has never been called into question. I think the main reason Camilla didn’t use the Princess of Wales title was because she and Charles were still unpopular at the time of their marriage. The initial announcement she would be “Princess Consort” seems to have had a similar rationale, but it seems the change to make her Queen Consort instead was part of Charles’ preparations to soft-launch himself and Camilla prior to taking on the roles officially, now that more time had passed.

      No, people always say Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife but he actually wanted to have the marriage annulled. The difference is that an annulment is an acknowledgement that the marriage was never legitimate or legal in the first place, therefore allowing him to marry after the annulment. The reason that rule used to be the case was that remarriage after divorce used to be prohibited in the Church of England (just as it was in the Catholic Church in Henry VIII’s time), but that was changed in 2002 I think. Hope that was helpful

    • @cakt1991

      Henry wanted an *annullment* to his marriage, as he believed his marriage went against God and should never have happened. It’s a cancellation, basically, and VTH kinda contextualized it in the first Eleanor of Aquitaine video. And I think the “no divorce” rule stuck because of the Anglican Church being so rooted in Catholic traditions, with a few exceptions.
