Upgrading My Railroad Speeder To Go Faster

  • I've been working on this DIY railroad speeder or electric rail go-kart thing for a couple years now. Last time we had it out, I wasn't happy with how slow it went. Now we've added a different motor to improve that!
As with all our railroad adventures, this track is completely abandoned and is too damaged to get a train down it (as seen in a prior speeder trip video). This track is soon to be torn up for a walking path or future transit development. Don't try this at home!

You sound so confident about those rails being unused, but be careful. Sometimes when a train abandons its nest a semi truck will lay its eggs there and trust me- you do not want to be around when those things hatch.

Yer invited to bring that Rail rockit out here to San Diego. Check out the Carrizo grade which sports a bunch of tunnels and high anxiety bridges. The Carrizo grade is abandoned, starts nowhere and ends nowhere. Well, technically it starts and ends in a nudist camp.
So you really don’t have to pack any clothes.
So bring your Minnesota tan out to San Diego and we’ll run your rail rocket through some mountains.

That would be cool! When my grandparents used to live in Santa Cruz they had an abandoned Railroad in the backyard. Some local guy would occasionally ride around on a railbike :-)

Inspiration! You could run a belt between each set of front and rear wheels (or just on one side), and engage the belt with the motor directly. That way, you’d have power from 2 or 4 wheels, and it would be easy to adjust tension, and you could experiment with different drive wheel sizes.
In a different subject: I wonder if you could incorporate a flywheel? I think it might be cool to make mass work for you, by using a flywheel as a sort of reservoir of inertia. You could have a flywheel between power source and drive wheel. That way, you could be generating usable inertia even when the drive wheel isn’t engaged, by spinning up the flywheel.

You could make a rail brush hog to tow or push! Maybe a spinning blade in the middle or a few string trimmers with something more durable then typical string trimmer string.

Hi, just dropping some ideas. With lithium batteries you will probably get a better result, they can deliver way more current than car batteries. Also, you could use a like a go kart rear axle with a detachable link (so you will be able to take it apart) to get traction in both rear wheels. Hope it helps!

Either that or Jerry-rig up some kind of gas-electric hybrid drive. But that would add a fair bit o' weight.

Deep cycle batteries last way longer. But they’re more expensive sadly. If I was building something like this, I would’ve just used a small gas engine because filling up a tank is faster than charging a battery

    • @raykrv6a

I agree. I would just get a engine from Harbor Freight and use a clutch.

    • @QUIX4U
      @QUIX4U 2 года назад

      Actually - I'd disagree..
1st as it's just a small "test unit" and 2nd, even deep cycle batteries HATE being deeply discharged.
Be me- I'd install (yes) a small gas powered stationary motor - but I'd install it with THREE standard car alternators, so that they 'recharged" the main batteries whenever they got depleted enough, to warrant a recharge - as that way - you can still use car (or truck) starter batteries - OR run the motors direct off the stationary motor's (three set) alternators.
Allowing you to bypass the batteries if they ever get too depleted

I also may have a solution to your battery issue. we use the heavy diesel starting batteries at work, the type 34. I can grab a couple destined for recycle, and maybe you can use those for your cart. they are a hybrid between starting and deep cycle

@@saveitforparts Ah! gotcha. Durand MI has a railroad museum. Maybe pay them a visit, this summer, and introduce yourself. Sounds AWESOME!! Speeders are awesome! I lived in Philly between 2001, and 2010, and in that time I saw a lot of speeders. I went out on the train, to Pittsburgh from Philly, more times than I can recall. (Also, D.C. NYC, Rhode Island, Boston, Charleston... ) I think you could seriously build a very nice light speeder, with enclosed/fully open cab, good speed, power, and quick acceleration.. Think: lowered Puch Haflinger, with soft sides, and top. all removable, and can be carried with, on a hot day, or zipped on for an autumn colors rally.
