The people being asphixated in the crush were surrounded by other people equally terrified, screaming for help. So they died not only terrified but surrounded by other people who were equally terrified... as others collapsed and were trampled by the mob of people trying and unable to get out.
Ii 1989 i was a Sheffield resident, listening on car radio, stopped the car and wept, ashamed of my city. Lost many friends who were supporters of the police propaganda to blame the fans. I took a great interest in the various inquests and inquiries. I travelled to Warrington inquest probably a dozen times and was there on judgement day in the family room. I am very proud of the jury decision. I admired the strength of character from the families. And will always be grateful for their tenacity in seeing this to the end. Good on you. Although I agree with most of what you wrote I don't agree about the Justice system. Read my above post. The verdicts were overturned from accidental death to unlawful killing. So that means somebody broke the law. Hence somebody should of been tried and prosecuted. We're talking about alot of High ranking police officers. Many of them it has now come out are Freemasons. Superintendent Duckenfield should have been charged with gross negligence and been jailed so Should of Bernard Murray. And Sheffield Wednesday safety officer Mackrell. And then there are the High ranking officers led by Peter Wright that "sanitized" the statements. And several statements from witnesses were made up. Case in point the Landlady of a local pub who made a false statement about drunken Liverpool fans and it end up she's the wife of a high ranking South Yorkshire Police Officer. Even the Farrier who made a false statement about a police Horse burned with cigarettes outside the ground despite there being no photo's of injury to the Horse a practice that would have been mandatory for a Farrier especially investigating the seriousness of the event. There are alot of Police officers at the top of SYP that I don't know the names of but they helped change or intimidate officers & public to change or drop witness statements. The normal Police bobbies who helped that day and suffered PTSD like many Liverpool fans that survived those pens had written statements & typed statements submitted. But (Sanitizing) removing alot of critical words of importance. While also adding or replacing words from example one was "Happy Fans" was changed to "Drunken Fans". I could go on & on. Please read my post above. Because alot of Police officers broke the law and were never charged. The ones that were taken to court twice ie Dukenfield have gotten off with it because they are Freemasons as are alot of Judges. After Dukenfield got off a second time in 2019 I know now this is the end of all legal proceedings and full justice will never be given to the families who have loved, lost & fought tirelessly for justice for over 30 years. The PCs on the pitch and in the terrace did everything they could to save people, it was the main man David Duckenfield who’s actions were unbelievable. he is absolutely right. there were so many people who had fake tickets and knew they were not entitled to entrance to the match yet they chose to go no matter the consequences. this was going to be a disaster inside or outside no matter how you look at it. there were too many people for the amount of tickets for the match. do not sit and blame just the police here it is absolutely those who chose to go with fake tickets and the crush happened. this is the most tragic event ever and the fact that people cannot sit together as one and enjoy a game without getting into heated arguments is a disgrace. there was ample space in the other areas to let the Liverpool fans in and enjoy the match.
I’m a Nottingham forest fan I was there that day I was only 12 I was sitting in the main stand near the players tunnel it still affects me what I seen at a young age it was horrific I will never ever forget it xxx
What annoys me the most is that the 3 previous semi finals at hillsborough had problems at the leppings lane end. 1981, 87 and 88 there were problems with crushing and the kick off for the 87 semi final had to be put back 20 minutes. The FA knew about all of that yet they still chose hillsborough as the venue for the 89 semi final. Total complacency which cost a lot of innocent lives.

Plus I had stood on that leppings lane terrace 2 months before the disaster when I went to see my team Manchester United play Sheffield Wednesday in a league game. We got in about 2:40-2:45 and the central tunnel was closed and we got directed to the pen under the banked terrace in the corner where we watched the game. You could see where possible problems might arise. I certainly did. There was no way of knowing how many people were in the individual pens . The capacity of 10,100 was for the whole terrace ( which was too high anyway ) but the pens capacity separately wasn’t. Plus there was no entry for each pen itself, it was through the turnstiles and take your pick of where to go. Only if the central tunnel was closed was the capacity set for the centre pens. So I know. I don’t need to prove anything.

I’m a Manchester United fan. Liverpool are our biggest rivals, to the point of hatred. We are 30 miles or so apart, our cities are rivals in literally everything but especially United and Liverpool being by far the 2 most successful English clubs. That said, no one should ever go to a football match and not make it home. Sadly it took best part of 30 years for the truth about who was responsible to come out in court. 25 years of lies and cover ups by multiple police forces, courts and governments. The only positive that can be taken in the intervening years is that we learned hundreds of lessons from Hillsborough that made football grounds much safer for us all
I've been in crowd-control emergencies twice, and it is worse than terrifying; it's COLLECTIVE terror and you and everyone else are 100% helpless. Both were in Paris, the 1st at a poorly managed public concert. You're not just standing there crammed against 1000 people...the crowd is moving, not just pushing forward but swaying from side to side, with no one controlling it. As a shorter female I'd elbowed my way up to everyone else's shoulder-level so I could breath, and my feet probably didn't touch the ground for 20 minutes. Every time you sway you're thinking we're all going to fall and that is going to be the end of it. I fought like crazy to get to the back of the crowd, fortunately in that case there WAS a back of the crowd, in Hillsborough there really wasn't. That tunnel must have been hell on earth. The other instance was when the RER trains went off schedule during rush hour, cramming 1000s into Chatelet station. The crowd wasn't as compact, but still shoulder to shoulder and moving forward so, so fast. You had no choice but to go in the direction everyone else was going, if you'd stopped or fallen you would have been trampled. And there was no 'back of the crowd' to get to, you were just moving like cattle through underground tunnels at a high speed. These happened a few months apart in my early 20s, 30 years ago. If I have to be in even a small crowd I stay at the back near an exit and I've spent 30 yrs arranging my life to never be anywhere near public transit at rush hour.
So far, this is the best video I've seen about the disaster. How absolutely terrifying. As someone who's claustrophobic, this is my worst nightmare come true. I've had horrible anxiety attacks at events when I've been stuck in a large crowd, but this takes it to a whole other level. I now avoid events like this as much as possible. There's nothing fun about being crammed in like sardines with a bunch of people. It's absolutely unacceptable that so many people were allowed to flood those 2 pens when there was room for plenty more above. The set-up of those pens frightens me just looking at it. All those steps leading down. I can't even imagine the horror those people must have felt feeling their bones crushing as they suffocated. You'd think the people would have stopped flooding those pens when they realized just how crowded it was! God bless the souls of those 96 victims and to all who were injured and who remain haunted by the tragedy. 🙏🏻
You’d think they would, but thing is; the tunnel acted as a cascade pulling the people through it. So you enter the tunnel at your own volition, but exit it as part of a giant human meat loaf. Horrifying.
The issue was that as you entered the tunnel, you have no way of knowing the situation at the front and once you are in, there was no way back out. That is where police control comes in. The procedure was supposed to be in place was that the match commander in the control box (which was directly overlooking that section, pause at 2:23 and it’s in the corner below the scoreboard) was supposed to order police/stewards to make a barrier in front of the tunnel and direct fans towards the side. Unfortunately the match commander was an idiot who had almost zero experience of policing football, zero knowledge of the ground or it’s procedures and didn’t even know the correct name of the 2 teams. He didn’t apply the procedure, and the exit gate he instructed to be opened was almost directly in front of the tunnel so everyone headed straight for that
As a Leeds fan, i was there in the Leppings Lane end when we played Coventry in 1987, it was the most claustrophobic atmosphere of any game iv'e ever attended. I do remember watching this unfold live on TV. It was so traumatic just watching it, my thoughts are always with the 97 who sadly passed due this tragedy. The South Yorkshire Police are beyond disgrace, no accountability or culpability , the blame culture that pervades society today, began then with the Freemasonic cover-up of this day
I am from Finland and during that time I was 15, still playing football in one of our local football clubs. I remember watching the news flash from TV about Hillsborough. I had seen earlier live from TV the Heysel events and also the Bradford fire. Football should be about friendship, brotherhood, fair play, great positive emotions. another thing I don't understand is, even if the police didn't realize that the pin was a death trap, how could they not see it as a hazard to anyone needing to leave due to emergency(heart attack, stroke)? no one could go to the restroom and having IBS myself, like MANY others,- you never know when nature will call. I'm having a tough time dealing with this and my emotions feel like these victims were my own loved ones, because I realize it could have been. i will never see events the same way again and will never forget the lost souls, I've learned of today.
In the 80s football fans were seen as the scum of the earth by Thatcher and her crew, Those that made the decisions on crowd control didn't give a fuck about safety, The only concern was to get the fans in to the ground as compact as possable and make sure they fucked off back home asap after, You really had to be going to matches watching your team play away in the 80s to understand fully.

My Dad said that there would be a disaster.(He had been going to watch Liverpool since the 50s) He said that on the terraces it’s like a sea and you just get carried along sometimes. When they brought in the fences he said people would be crushed and he was right.
My dad was at Hillsborough that horrible day in 89. The year before in 88 he had been in leppings lane that year but thankly dad and my uncle didn't in 89. The problem was that the central pens tunnel entrance had not been shut as that is what would normally happen, so all the fans that were allowed in through exit gate C just went to the central pens with no police direction having had no direction to the side pens They were not signed when you arrived. Most fans saw the tunnel and did not realise that they were going into tiny pens. There was enough room for all the supporters with tickets even the thousands that came through Exit gate C That was a fact after the inquest. The fans were not directed to a safe place to watch the game. Gross negligence by the SYPC
I know it seems really inhumane hording fans into pens. And it is, the reasoning being stemmed from the 70s onwards with football attracting hooligans so it was seen as keeping the nut cases back. But really it did the opposite and tragedies like this were eventually bound to happen.

I've lived in the US, France, Mexico and S. Korea and that seems to be the universal attitude of police in all 4, Korea maybe slightly less than the others. In France I might ask a cop for help if I really needed it, in the US I'd have to be desperate. In Mexico going to the cops is the LAST thing I'd do, they were corrupt in every interaction I or anyone else I know has ever had with them, minor or major, and they're armed to the teeth--even more so than US cops.

Some of these accounts are so raw and honest. When reading and hearing testimonies, I often privately wondered how one could escape a crush without (entirely inadvertently and through no malice) encumbering someone else. I mean, if your feet aren't even on the ground, the first time you have leverage with them, you're going to push -- whether what's underneath is the ground or a person. People were vomiting, losing control of their bladders and bowels; they didn't even have enough purchase to expand their chests to breathe. I don't care how many people you had to step on or over to survive something like this. That's animal instinct. It's just incredible that so many people survived. I wish everyone could have survived. What amazes me most is how many survivors turned back around and went on to HELP others. Like hi, I just almost died escaping this and I just literally witnessed the life being squeezed out of dozens of people but sure, I can haul some stretchers and fight off the cops who are inexplicably guarding the center line?!
Justice at last. These were, and are people's lives. Their families…their love and passion… they were real people and they died screaming and crying and crushed under a mass of panicking humanity… I can only begin to imagine how lonely and horrible that death was. This whole disaster could’ve been avoided if either a) police didn’t open the exits gates to let fans into the already overcrowded areas or b) the police actually let some of the 45 ambulances into the stadium, they only let one ambulance in so that’s why so many people passed away.
Once inside the fans should have geen directed to the left and right of the overcrowded central pens. It would have taken two or so people and save many lives.
I must have been to Sheff Wed about six times prior to the disaster, I wasnt aware of how to get to the side pens. I always stood in the central pen if i never got a ticket for the stands. How Sheff Wed avoided charges amazes me. Awful ground.

We don't have a 9/11 song or a Station Fire song or anything that the survivors sing together. This all strikes me as something to be proud of if you're from Liverpool. I find survivors often say they survived because they tried to and fought (which is the case a lot of times of course) but the fact that he really had no choice must be something hard to accept as it's hard for all of us to accept mortality.

You’ll never walk alone was the Liverpool anthem long before Hillsborough happened. It’s originally from the musical Carousel, but it was a big hit for scouse group Gerry and the Pacemakers in the 60s, it’s been sung on the terraces ever since. It’s more poignant now…and fitting in a way. Makes me cry now, particularly as we had it at my Dads funeral as he was a lifelong Liverpool supporter.

Did the commentator said at 12:00 ….at six o'clock..."the game was stopped and the RESCUE began"? They call that "a rescue"? Helping a couple of people over the fence when most of them were already dead from the most gruesome death imaginable or in their final moments of their short lives on this earth? Most people knew leppings lane end was dodgy should never have used Hillsborough for semi finals the fa stopped using it for most of the eighties for that reason
Not true There were a few reasons why it wasn't used More due to the fact of who played the semis (location etc) And also Wednesday made the semi final twice in the 80s themselves It was used 4 times 2 times it couldn't because of Wednesday being one of the teams and the other years it wasn't right given the sides who met (fan travel)
doyoulikebeetroot the main reason was that the FA told Sheffield Wednesday that no more semi finals would be played there until they sorted out the problems with their ground (mainly the leppings Lane end) after the problems that occurred in the 1981 semi final between spurs and wolves. The club then split the leppings lane terrace into pens and put a roof on the kop. That seemed to satisfy the FA.
It pissed me off to find out those in charge didn't take responsibility for what happened, Yes we are responsible for ourselves but its up to security and police to keep a crowded place safe. Instead of taking responsibility they tried to pin it on those that died, The fans did more than the trained security that day the fans were the heroes that day it could have been even worse if the fans were not helping each other in anyway possible

Kevin Melia gate c was opened 3 times. First time at 2:48pm to eject a fan who jumped through the turnstiles without a ticket and 150 fans went through because of the pressure, 2nd time 2:52pm when duckenfield gave the order to open gate c and it was closed about 2:55pm, 3rd time it was opened at 2:58pm.

All it needed to avert this tragedy was a reasonable amount of crowd control at Leppings Lane and a couple of staff inside directing fans to the left and right of the central pens.

Given the apparent numbers of fans still pouring through the gates, would it have made much difference if the side pens had been opened? Could there possibly have been more fatalities given that would've meant even MORE people would be in that terrace area and crushed up against the front fencing.
Sheffield Wednesday and The FA didn't account for the additional fences that separated the terraces into 'pens', reducing the capacity from 7200 to 5500. So there's an additional 1700 tickets that shouldn't have been sold there.

Something that dawned on me and it's only a coincidence. But TITANIC was registered at Liverpool and it's written on the back of the ship. And it sank 15th April the same date as the Hillsborough disaster. Kind of eery to think of the stern of that ship going under with Liverpool written on the back on the same date.
Match of the day reviewed the disaster with footage at Hillsborough that evening. They emphasised that there was no violence, and you can see from the footage that everything was because of police mismanagement. Later on in 1989 the initial inquiry blamed the police solely. Everyone with any sense knew that the culprits were the police.

My uncle went and was a season ticket holder for years and still renewed it every year till he died but couldn't attend another game after that fatal day and it affected him to the day he died I used to go with him and another uncle and cousin but luckily my dad and other uncle wouldn't allow me or my cousin similar age to go as I was only 9 and they had been there before and was adamant its to dangerous for us and watching it unfold my dad instantly said the police and fa have blood on there hands if there's any deaths them pens in the leppings end are a death trap i will never forget my dad saying them words, the disgusting treatment of us fans by msm and the police and the authorities that be was/is truly disgusting, RIP THE 97 YWNA

that year 89, I went as a ten year old to spurs v Newcastle which was either a 5th or 6th round fa cup round and the same shit happened. I was watching the Newcastle fans get squashed and spill on to the pitch but thank fuck there were no deaths but why this was not looked at when 2 or 3 months later in the same competition 96 poor people lost there lives?. it's on RUclips footage of the spurs game and you can see what's going on. should never have happened, I'm 39 now but remember both days clearly. rip the 96

Ii 1989 i was a Sheffield resident, listening on car radio, stopped the car and wept, ashamed of my city. Lost many friends who were supporters of the police propaganda to blame the fans. I took a great interest in the various inquests and inquiries. I travelled to Warrington inquest probably a dozen times and was there on judgement day in the family room. I am very proud of the jury decision. I admired the strength of character from the families. And will always be grateful for their tenacity in seeing this to the end. Good on you. Although I agree with most of what you wrote I don't agree about the Justice system. Read my above post. The verdicts were overturned from accidental death to unlawful killing. So that means somebody broke the law. Hence somebody should of been tried and prosecuted. We're talking about alot of High ranking police officers. Many of them it has now come out are Freemasons. Superintendent Duckenfield should have been charged with gross negligence and been jailed so Should of Bernard Murray. And Sheffield Wednesday safety officer Mackrell. And then there are the High ranking officers led by Peter Wright that "sanitized" the statements. And several statements from witnesses were made up. Case in point the Landlady of a local pub who made a false statement about drunken Liverpool fans and it end up she's the wife of a high ranking South Yorkshire Police Officer. Even the Farrier who made a false statement about a police Horse burned with cigarettes outside the ground despite there being no photo's of injury to the Horse a practice that would have been mandatory for a Farrier especially investigating the seriousness of the event.
There are alot of Police officers at the top of SYP that I don't know the names of but they helped change or intimidate officers & public to change or drop witness statements. The normal Police bobbies who helped that day and suffered PTSD like many Liverpool fans that survived those pens had written statements & typed statements submitted. But (Sanitizing) removing alot of critical words of importance. While also adding or replacing words from example one was "Happy Fans" was changed to "Drunken Fans". I could go on & on.

What annoys me the most is that the 3 previous semi finals at hillsborough had problems at the leppings lane end. 1981, 87 and 88 there were problems with crushing and the kick off for the 87 semi final had to be put back 20 minutes. The FA knew about all of that yet they still chose hillsborough as the venue for the 89 semi final. Total complacency which cost a lot of innocent lives.

Plus I had stood on that leppings lane terrace 2 months before the disaster when I went to see my team Manchester United play Sheffield Wednesday in a league game. We got in about 2:40-2:45 and the central tunnel was closed and we got directed to the pen under the banked terrace in the corner where we watched the game. You could see where possible problems might arise. I certainly did. There was no way of knowing how many people were in the individual pens . The capacity of 10,100 was for the whole terrace ( which was too high anyway ) but the pens capacity separately wasn’t. Plus there was no entry for each pen itself, it was through the turnstiles and take your pick of where to go. Only if the central tunnel was closed was the capacity set for the centre pens. So I know. I don’t need to prove anything.
Plus they should have given the north stand to Liverpool, because they easily had more supporters than Notts Forest

I’m a Manchester United fan. Liverpool are our biggest rivals, to the point of hatred. We are 30 miles or so apart, our cities are rivals in literally everything but especially United and Liverpool being by far the 2 most successful English clubs. That said, no one should ever go to a football match and not make it home. Sadly it took best part of 30 years for the truth about who was responsible to come out in court. 25 years of lies and cover ups by multiple police forces, courts and governments.
The only positive that can be taken in the intervening years is that we learned hundreds of lessons from Hillsborough that made football grounds much safer for us all
I've been in crowd-control emergencies twice, and it is worse than terrifying; it's COLLECTIVE terror and you and everyone else are 100% helpless. Both were in Paris, the 1st at a poorly managed public concert. You're not just standing there crammed against 1000 people...the crowd is moving, not just pushing forward but swaying from side to side, with no one controlling it. As a shorter female I'd elbowed my way up to everyone else's shoulder-level so I could breath, and my feet probably didn't touch the ground for 20 minutes. Every time you sway you're thinking we're all going to fall and that is going to be the end of it. I fought like crazy to get to the back of the crowd, fortunately in that case there WAS a back of the crowd, in Hillsborough there really wasn't. That tunnel must have been hell on earth. The other instance was when the RER trains went off schedule during rush hour, cramming 1000s into Chatelet station. The crowd wasn't as compact, but still shoulder to shoulder and moving forward so, so fast. You had no choice but to go in the direction everyone else was going, if you'd stopped or fallen you would have been trampled. And there was no 'back of the crowd' to get to, you were just moving like cattle through underground tunnels at a high speed. These happened a few months apart in my early 20s, 30 years ago. If I have to be in even a small crowd I stay at the back near an exit and I've spent 30 yrs arranging my life to never be anywhere near public transit at rush hour.

So far, this is the best video I've seen about the disaster. How absolutely terrifying. As someone who's claustrophobic, this is my worst nightmare come true. I've had horrible anxiety attacks at events when I've been stuck in a large crowd, but this takes it to a whole other level. I now avoid events like this as much as possible. There's nothing fun about being crammed in like sardines with a bunch of people. It's absolutely unacceptable that so many people were allowed to flood those 2 pens when there was room for plenty more above. The set-up of those pens frightens me just looking at it. All those steps leading down. I can't even imagine the horror those people must have felt feeling their bones crushing as they suffocated. You'd think the people would have stopped flooding those pens when they realized just how crowded it was! God bless the souls of those 96 victims and to all who were injured and who remain haunted by the tragedy.

You’d think they would, but thing is; the tunnel acted as a cascade pulling the people through it. So you enter the tunnel at your own volition, but exit it as part of a giant human meat loaf. Horrifying.
The issue was that as you entered the tunnel, you have no way of knowing the situation at the front and once you are in, there was no way back out. That is where police control comes in. The procedure was supposed to be in place was that the match commander in the control box (which was directly overlooking that section, pause at 2:23 and it’s in the corner below the scoreboard) was supposed to order police/stewards to make a barrier in front of the tunnel and direct fans towards the side. Unfortunately the match commander was an idiot who had almost zero experience of policing football, zero knowledge of the ground or it’s procedures and didn’t even know the correct name of the 2 teams. He didn’t apply the procedure, and the exit gate he instructed to be opened was almost directly in front of the tunnel so everyone headed straight for that
As a Leeds fan, i was there in the Leppings Lane end when we played Coventry in 1987, it was the most claustrophobic atmosphere of any game iv'e ever attended. I do remember watching this unfold live on TV. It was so traumatic just watching it, my thoughts are always with the 97 who sadly passed due this tragedy. I had seen earlier live from TV the Heysel events and also the Bradford fire. Football should be about friendship, brotherhood, fair play, great positive emotions. another thing I don't understand is, even if the police didn't realize that the pin was a death trap, how could they not see it as a hazard to anyone needing to leave due to emergency(heart attack, stroke)? no one could go to the restroom and having IBS myself, like MANY others,- you never know when nature will call. Safety is number 1!! there will always be drunken accidents and fights at games, needing defenseive strategies but safety control is proactive in preventing deaths. He would have no experience in fires in high rise buildings and people would die. why was this man in charge of calling all shots when he had no experience in this. heartbreakingly irresponsible. it's hard to watch these souls being hurded like cattle into a deathtrap in the footage. I'm having a tough time dealing with this and my emotions feel like these victims were my own loved ones, because I realize it could have been. i will never see events the same way again and will never forget the lost souls, I've learned of today.

My Dad said that there would be a disaster.(He had been going to watch Liverpool since the 50s) He said that on the terraces it’s like a sea and you just get carried along sometimes. When they brought in the fences he said people would be crushed and he was right.

The problem was that the central pens tunnel entrance had not been shut as that is what would normally happen, so all the fans that were allowed in through exit gate C just went to the central pens with no police direction having had no direction to the side pens They were not signed when you arrived. Most fans saw the tunnel and did not realise that they were going into tiny pens. There was enough room for all the supporters with tickets even the thousands that came through Exit gate C That was a fact after the inquest. The fans were not directed to a safe place to watch the game. Gross negligence by the SYPC

In France I might ask a cop for help if I really needed it, in the US I'd have to be desperate. In Mexico going to the cops is the LAST thing I'd do, they were corrupt in every interaction I or anyone else I know has ever had with them, minor or major, and they're armed to the teeth--even more so than US cops.

Some of these accounts are so raw and honest. When reading and hearing testimonies, I often privately wondered how one could escape a crush without (entirely inadvertently and through no malice) encumbering someone else. I mean, if your feet aren't even on the ground, the first time you have leverage with them, you're going to push -- whether what's underneath is the ground or a person. People were vomiting, losing control of their bladders and bowels; they didn't even have enough purchase to expand their chests to breathe. I don't care how many people you had to step on or over to survive something like this. That's animal instinct. It's just incredible that so many people survived. I wish everyone could have survived.
What amazes me most is how many survivors turned back around and went on to HELP others. Like hi, I just almost died escaping this and I just literally witnessed the life being squeezed out of dozens of people but sure, I can haul some stretchers and fight off the cops who are inexplicably guarding the center line?!
Justice at last. These were, and are people's lives. Their families…their love and passion… they were real people and they died screaming and crying and crushed under a mass of panicking humanity… I can only begin to imagine how lonely and horrible that death was. This whole disaster could’ve been avoided if either a) police didn’t open the exits gates to let fans into the already overcrowded areas or b) the police actually let some of the 45 ambulances into the stadium, they only let one ambulance in so that’s why so many people passed away.

I must have been to Sheff Wed about six times prior to the disaster, I wasnt aware of how to get to the side pens. I always stood in the central pen if i never got a ticket for the stands. How Sheff Wed avoided charges amazes me. Awful ground.

I find survivors often say they survived because they tried to and fought (which is the case a lot of times of course) but the fact that he really had no choice must be something hard to accept as it's hard for all of us to accept mortality.
I think us British are quite reserved most of the time and we release it at events singing and things like that,where as you Americans are more emotional and celebrate in general,you kind of woop and holler,we're becoming a bit more like you are now too but we still like to sing and release like this,in fact a lot of Europe's like that but don't sell yourselves short,meaning you have other ways of releasing your feelings,I quite admire the way American men are not afraid to cry and get passionate over things,I've seen the scientists who've dived to titanic cry and boxing commentators cry who were American,it's actually quite sweet really,I think that's why the brits and now the Americans rule the world,we're great people with amazing historys

It’s more poignant now…and fitting in a way. Makes me cry now, particularly as we had it at my Dads funeral as he was a lifelong Liverpool supporter.
Real sadness :( my dad was at Leeds v Coventry in 1987 it was that packed he couldnt put his arms up and had to sway to the side pens the warning signs were there in 1981, 1987 and 1988 yet nothing was done total in competence from numerous people. Helping a couple of people over the fence when most of them were already dead from the most gruesome death imaginable or in their final moments of their short lives on this earth? Most people knew leppings lane end was dodgy should never have used Hillsborough for semi finals the fa stopped using it for most of the eighties for that reason

More due to the fact of who played the semis (location etc)
And also Wednesday made the semi final twice in the 80s themselves
It was used 4 times
2 times it couldn't because of Wednesday being one of the teams and the other years it wasn't right given the sides who met (fan travel)
doyoulikebeetroot the main reason was that the FA told Sheffield Wednesday that no more semi finals would be played there until they sorted out the problems with their ground (mainly the leppings Lane end) after the problems that occurred in the 1981 semi final between spurs and wolves. The club then split the leppings lane terrace into pens and put a roof on the kop. That seemed to satisfy the FA.

It pissed me off to find out those in charge didn't take responsibility for what happened, Yes we are responsible for ourselves but its up to security and police to keep a crowded place safe. Instead of taking responsibility they tried to pin it on those that died, The fans did more than the trained security that day the fans were the heroes that day it could have been even worse if the fans were not helping each other in anyway possible

Kevin Melia gate c was opened 3 times. First time at 2:48pm to eject a fan who jumped through the turnstiles without a ticket and 150 fans went through because of the pressure, 2nd time 2:52pm when duckenfield gave the order to open gate c and it was closed about 2:55pm, 3rd time it was opened at 2:58pm.

All it needed to avert this tragedy was a reasonable amount of crowd control at Leppings Lane and a couple of staff inside directing fans to the left and right of the central pens.

Given the apparent numbers of fans still pouring through the gates, would it have made much difference if the side pens had been opened? Could there possibly have been more fatalities given that would've meant even MORE people would be in that terrace area and crushed up against the front fencing.
Sheffield Wednesday and The FA didn't account for the additional fences that separated the terraces into 'pens', reducing the capacity from 7200 to 5500. So there's an additional 1700 tickets that shouldn't have been sold there.

Something that dawned on me and it's only a coincidence. But TITANIC was registered at Liverpool and it's written on the back of the ship. And it sank 15th April the same date as the Hillsborough disaster. Kind of eery to think of the stern of that ship going under with Liverpool written on the back on the same date.

Match of the day reviewed the disaster with footage at Hillsborough that evening. They emphasised that there was no violence, and you can see from the footage that everything was because of police mismanagement. Later on in 1989 the initial inquiry blamed the police solely. Everyone with any sense knew that the culprits were the police.

My uncle went and was a season ticket holder for years and still renewed it every year till he died but couldn't attend another game after that fatal day and it affected him to the day he died I used to go with him and another uncle and cousin but luckily my dad and other uncle wouldn't allow me or my cousin similar age to go as I was only 9 and they had been there before and was adamant its to dangerous for us and watching it unfold my dad instantly said the police and fa have blood on there hands if there's any deaths them pens in the leppings end are a death trap i will never forget my dad saying them words, the disgusting treatment of us fans by msm and the police and the authorities that be was/is truly disgusting, RIP THE 97 YWNA

I am in USA and it was on the news the day it happened, and people were blaming Liverpool hooligans at that point. We never got a follow up story with the truth. So many people in the world still believe that story. I try to educate, but it is not enough.

that year 89, I went as a ten year old to spurs v Newcastle which was either a 5th or 6th round fa cup round and the same shit happened. I was watching the Newcastle fans get squashed and spill on to the pitch but thank fuck there were no deaths but why this was not looked at when 2 or 3 months later in the same competition 96 poor people lost there lives?. it's on RUclips footage of the spurs game and you can see what's going on. should never have happened, I'm 39 now but remember both days clearly. rip the 96
