Great to see this again. This was my first ever day at a test match, with a dozen or so workmates from EMI Electronics Hayes, cost maybe a tenner to get in ?. Bought my first cool box the night before especially for the occasion, needed those cool beers given the hot forecast. Wasn't impressed having just wooden benches to sit on lol, no "posher" than Bristol's Nevil Road lol. Next to us was three or four "elderly" West Indian gents who lived local and often sneaked-in without tickets, grabbing any spare seats, when their seats were very-belatedly taken by the American? ticketholders they were full of scorn lol before leaving early, albeit after kindly sharing their home-cooked bbq chicken with us. Oh yes, the cricket was great too, by teatime we almost felt sorry for the Aussie bowlers under the hot sun.
How many tests did Murray Bennett play? Looks totally harmless here. Along with Bob Holland, he must constitute one of the most threadbare spin line-ups ever. In sharp contrast to what was coming a short while later!
Hello Jan, he played three Tests and 8 ODIs for Australia. His greatest Test cricketing moment possibly came on Day 4 of this Match when he refused to take the umpires' offer of bad light, with a packed crowd and Australia about to lose. He promptly became Les Taylor's greatest Test cricketing moment, the wicket that officially won the Ashes. That will be uploaded tomorrow. Thank you for watching, DARREN
@@dmmordecai7984 Lol. I'll look forward to it - thanks! I see he has just caught Gower rather handily at gully, though, and got rid of Gatting, who was seeing like a football at the time.
Bennett took 16 wickets at 47.87 on tour in England in '85. Nothing about his form or his record in English conditions merited his call up, IMO. Alan Border's own left arm spin was a better option for the Aussies in "85
@@oceanwaves657 Hello VOLCANO HD, my priority is to convert my tapes chronologically as it will probably be the last time I get to watch them. Currently, I am up to August 1990, so it will be over a year before I reach the 1999-2000 series which has not been needed to trade with. The sporadic later ODIs and Tests I have uploaded are only being converted from VHS to DVD ahead of schedule in order to trade for the few gaps I have in my England collection. Have some patience, everything hopefully will be uploaded as long the channel stays open and I keep breathing. Thank you for your interest, DARREN

@@justinschiferl213The problem with Bob Holland was that, if he had a googly, he must have left it on the plane on the way over from Oz! There was not much mystery in his bowling and he was quite a slow leg break bowler too, which gave him little room for error

Gower certainly lived dangerously in that first session.
I’d forgotten how streaky Gower was early in this innings - could have been out four or five times
Gower is amazing
David Gower is stylish elegant lefthander
Murray Bennett was the Simon Kerrigan of his day. Quite why they didn't pick Ray Bright I'll never know.
Murray Bennett. What was it Alistair Cook called Jack Leach? Ken from accounts.
734 by Gower in this series is superb

McDermott may not have been the quickest bowler of all time but he surely had the fastest run-up
Please upload South Africa v Zimbabwe 1999 test series. We are eagerly waiting for that series.
Hello VOLCANO HD, sorry, I do not have that series. Thank you for your interest, DARREN

Bennett and Gilbert disappeared up their own fundaments didn't they.
They were rubbish and they know it of course I feel they should’ve kept bob holland

I know the Oval is a big ground by modern standards but still good to see the boundary ropes pushed back.
