Summary: Dobro master Jerry Douglas and bassist Daniel Kimbro of The Jerry Douglas Band brought their virtuosic bluegrass/jazz fusion to Paste Studios, where they played two songs from their forthcoming record, What If. They started things off with a lively cover of the classic track “Hey Joe,” made famous by Jimi Hendrix but recorded by myriad artists before and after. Next came a version of “genius” Tom Waits’s “2:19.” Douglas went solo for the final song of the set, playing an instrumental medley on his Dobro including his songs “A Tribute To Peador O’Donnell” and “Lil Ro Ro,” plus The Allman Brothers Band’s “Little Martha.” You can catch the full, seven-piece Jerry Douglas Band on tour across the U.S. throughout the summer and back in New York City at City Winery on Aug 10. Amazing, never knew Jerry could sing like that
Not only is he the BEST dobro player ever He can sing up a storm.Could not believe how soulful his voice is.A true master.👌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
He may have the best (musical) life of anyone I can think of - greatest of all time on his instrument, picking musical fruit from every tree in the forest, joining a constellation of elite players and singers in every style and every venue imaginable, with grace and a mild demeanor. Jerry, I hope you're as happy as you make anyone who takes minute to listen to you. Thanks to Paste for this video, to Jerry for joyful tracks on my heart and many, and to God!
What a growl on that dobro! Clarity too!
I have now heard Jerry sing two times. Both times he has knocked me out. He is a great singer!
The bass player has it going on!
For years and years I have known one simplel fact that Jerry Douglas is without question the very best dobro player in the world now it seems to my untrained ear that Jerry may have just found the very best upright bass player in the world these two fells playing together sounds so fantastic
Jerry Douglas is simply amazing👍
Seeing Jerry Douglas picking absolutely EVERYWHERE, with absolutely EVERYBODY, has been the funnest part of my journey into bluegrass.
Totally agree that Jerry Douglas is the greatest dobros player, best arranger for blue grass music, love his band performance 👍❤️
What a fantastic version of an old folk song ..didn't realize you were such a good singer ....beats Hendrix version by a million miles well done just a double bass and a dobro and a thousand years of experience and knowledge cramed into 50 ish ...well done gerry one of the last best dobro greats 👍👏👏👏👏👏🏴🥃
Jerry is a national treasure.
I Love it!!
The version of hey joe is amazing!!
Absolutely love these guys. Been a Jerry Douglas lover since I heard him with Alison Krauss And Union Station.
WOW Thanks Jerry!!! I'm a Funk, Jazz, Rock, 50's Big Bank, Classic musician and I was in one of my rooms (every room has a radio tuned to a variety of stations) I love music and this radio was playing one of your songs and I've never heard such beauty and smoothness and the WOW Factor played on your instrument of choice and now I'm a fan, Fan FAN!!! Thanks for painting with such colorful sound.
I was privileged to be a young banjo player who got to go back stage at every show and meet these legends. You name em, I probably met em. Some good times of my youth. Modern day kids don't appreciate things like this
Sure we do! : ) There's a whole new generation of bluegrass, old-time, and folk enthusiasts out there, and many of them are starting to make a real splash in the community -- Sierra Hull, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, etc.
Good on you. Been watching Sierra since she was playing in her family band. Going to jams now and then a "foreigner" shows up without gray hair and they have a handle on their instrument. Talent keeps showing up and moving on. Most never make commercial records but they have the chops to get-ter done.@@samuelbarham8483
Would you agree with me that Jerry Douglas is the greatest Dobro player of all time?
I do !
Yes.
Yup. No question
Yes! He’s the pioneer of the Dobro. He started playing it when no one else did.
Even today, it’s difficult to find a dobro teacher.
Sensational!! Thanks. We are so lucky.
Einer der besten.
Hey Joe finally done right. Yes sir, Master on d dobro Douglas!
Holy crap this is sooo awesome. Makes me proud to be from Ohio. Love Jerry
7 down to 2 and still killing it
amazingggg this!
Ended up watching this by luck. Never heard of them before. Hey Joe blew my mind away. And... what? 560 likes only? Surely RUclips had been hacked. Can't be right. Nothing is fair in this world anymore...
Jerry has a voice like that? DAMN!!!!
Jerry "legend" douglas!
Amazing!
Pure awesomeness
Never heardJerry sing this before, only Tim. Heard him sing Salty Dog long time ago.
Amazing
Jerry does it again
Great sound on bass. Big and wide.
I love
Holy Shat Batman! Going to see him open for John Hiatt in August. Never heard of this guy. What a talent!
Watch the movie Where Art Thou and you'll get another shot at Jerry.
Hi Jerry your a true Professional Amazing Player .... Was written in 1965 by Bill Roberts . Jimi would be proud of this version I'm sure . Take Care . I can play it on my You Tube Channel
Obviously you didn't listen to Jerry it was never Hendricks song initially .and he wasn't that great anyway ..real y. Was he ..... ..it was an original folk song 😂😂😂😂 gerry Douglas.s. Eats it his version us a million times better with a dobro and a double bass ....wel done gerry 👏👏👏👏👏🏴🥃
Song was made famous by The Leaves.
epic
Jerry sings great on Allman Bros. 'Jessica' and 'Little Martha'.😂
28.57%
The 219 Tom Waits😎😎☕️
When you're great...well, you're great...eh, eh!!
yto ? why is he singing, why doesn't he do this more often ?! good to hear him sing.
smoky air wrecks your voice and it turns into sandpaper. Most venues don't clear the air well. you can play longer if you are not the vocalist.
When you’re good you’re good but when you’re really good they call you Cracker Jack. Yeah Cracker Jack Jerry. Still waiting for JD to hook up with a Tuba player and cut a few Polkas! Let it roll!
the bass player are no slouch either👍
Great stuff but it's more like the Jerry Douglas duo. Lol
