  • Wednesday means it's Q and A day!! Great questions again this week, and I even take on a bonus question since I'm on vacation. We discuss topics like whether we should crack slabs, what ethics should collectors follow, my takeaways from the Sports Card HOF, and more!! Thanks to everyone who submitted a question. Please don't hesitate to ask a question in the comments below. I'm always honored to give my opinion to your questions. Whenever I can talk about baseball cards, football cards, basketball cards, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, and others...I have a lot of fun!! And...Q and A day is as fun as it gets.

    Thanks for asking my question about the 56 banks. My purpose was to resell it bc I found a gray back I decided to keep over it. I ended up selling it at a card show with the altered sticker in a card saver. Still sold at a psa 5-6 price. The alteration on compressed cards still bugs me with grading companies. I think they should just take a few points off the grade.

      Condition of the cards is number one. If cards in poor condition then value of cards is questionable but if they are in good or better condition then would try to find out if auction house would be interested in auctioning for her. Would tell her to send them to auctioneer’s and let her deal with them. After all that she still doesn’t want them and if I still wanted them, it would be up to me how I wanted to continue.

I agree that the Johnson, Greenberg, Speaker, and Seaver should have got in. They are so iconic. The cards that got in were all iconic as well. I am firmly in this camp. The HOF has become a joke in recent years. It’s either the “hall of very good” in the cases of guys like Baines and Rolen, or just a straight up popularity contest. Just ask 80 WAR Curt Schilling. What REALLY grinds my gears is the inconsistency of the whole thing. Either take the stance that the PED guys should all be banned, or not. There’s no excuse for allowing the likes of Papi and Pudge, but then denying Bonds, Clemens, and Arod. It makes no sense.

There is a ''steroid wing'' at Cooperstown Mesueum... there’s a huge room dedicated to Bonds, Sosa, who you don't think belongs. Probably doesn't. But, still an integral part of that PED era.. and McGwire that plays clips from the home run chase on a big TV and has gear used by all 3 of them. Graig, thanks for answering my question!
    New question- I’ve been watching some recent RUclips videos about modern collectors. I’m honestly trying to understand that side of the hobby more. I’m constantly seeing- trading, and coin flipping. It feels like they have no attachment to any of the cards or players. Every card is available for trade. It makes me wonder- Do you think modern collectors love cards OR love trading and possible making profit from- “Trading up” or “picking the right prospect”?…..At the end of the day- they aren’t hurting anyone and they are enjoying the hobby, it just makes me wonder what the hobby will look like in 20 years.

    • @ACD1994
      @ACD1994 Месяц назад

      Theo, great question. My thoughts for what they are worth, which is nothing at all. The hobby is in a junk wax era 2.0. Going back to the original junk wax era, though there are some similarities. The mid or late 1980's decade. A lot of collectors were going after whoever the chase cards were at that time. The Mattingly's, the McGwire, some of the prospects who didn't pan out...and of course, the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card. But to answer the do modern collectors love cards or the love of tradinh up for profit. It's both. For some people they try turn it into a business, or a side hustle. And for others they collect because they enjoy the process, and watch sports. And collect players and the teams they are fans of.

    • @ClementeCollector
      @ClementeCollector Месяц назад

      @@ACD1994 it might be both and the modern guys on RUclips I’m seeing are more dealer, then collector. The collectors don’t have the popular channels maybe…. But vintage the dealers don’t act the same way, they buy the cards, they don’t trade up and everything is expendable. So it definitely feels different.

    • @ACD1994
      @ACD1994 Месяц назад +1

      @@ClementeCollector The challenging part for me when it comes to ultra-modern is understanding what makes some Shohei Ohtani rookie cards thousands of dollars, and others not even $100? I guess maybe because they're numbered. And what is frustrating is that the breakers, and some of these RUclips channels that do focus on that part of the hobby, are likely having their first grabs at it from Fanatics. So yeah. Just makes things that much more difficult for collectors who are into it. I wouldn't advocate to buy $1000 or $500 dollar boxes. Unless it's something they can afford to spend, but wouldn't expect a return on that all. Last month, I spent $100 dollars on a 2024 Topps Heritage. Just because I like the 1975 Topps set design. Not the greatest reason. I know. But pretty smart to use a old school design for the newer cards...and they do have some of the legends in these packs and boxes too.

    Hi Graig! Great video. I just starting collecting vintage a few years ago. Prior to this, I PC’d just my favorite team…the Astros. I’m 44 now and getting a lot of cards on my list is going to be difficult from a budget standpoint. I wanted to go to the National, but it’s not going to work this year. I only go to two very small shows a year locally. I really want to go the graded route, but I know I can get more buying raw. My question is, would you (in my position) go the raw or graded route? It’s the age old quantity vs quality argument.

    Wow, what a great batch of questions and answers! Firstly, Theo's is a situation I pray to find, for the seller. Having a good relationship with SGC, if I saw a collection of high value when I was out and knew they were real, I would explain to the seller what they had and would offer to help grade them and sell them. Not criticizing anyone's ethics by any means but if it's big time pre-war cards that's what I would do - because I have that option. Now I've had 100 people's worth of crazy pick-ups over the years so I would never dream of judging anyone else's scores. But if we're talking Gehrig's and Cobb's, I have to take that seller aside and break it down.
    Question #2? Well that's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma and then eaten by Schrodinger's Cat. Bro/sis, I feel your pain and, just, dang... I understand the logic as well entirely in this case! Dumbfounding situation, really. Question #3... The only card I voted for that made it was the Leaf Satchell Paige. I voted for the 1909 Johnson, 1934 Greenberg and the T206 Speaker as well.
    #4.... I just think that if Bonds and Clemens used it was because they were watching far lesser players being worshipped and they knew why. They both may have came to a point where they both decided that if there are no rules against it and that's what the fan's want while MLB struggles to get it's fans back, we'll show them what happens when the best try it out for an off season. We found out if so. But no rules against it and I agree with the Bonds and Clemens argument for the same reasons you mentioned also, Graig. And your Clemens collecting reasoning defines the "collect what you like" motto. Clemens was a beast, though either way.
    #5... Gotta slab those sharp or centered HOF pinhole RCS! I sold my original Ernie Banks RC back in 1996 for $70 to my Dad and it has four rounded corners. But if I ever get it back, it goes straight to be fitted for a tux. I may even crossover my PSA 1 to SGC.
    #6... I'm facing the same decision with 9-10 cards right now. Crossover or crack-out? I need to talk to my rep about it first, I think. I may even run them through PSA's review service. I'd so much rather have the tux but I don't think SGC offers the same service. Great questions and answers. I've never been compelled to reply to them all like this.

    Re: Cracking and resubmitting. I bought a 1932 Sanella Babe Ruth in an older PSA 4 holder. It looked like a 7 to me: perfect centering and great eye appeal. My opinion was not changed when I had it in my hand and examined it with a magnifiying glass. I asked Graig his opinion and he thought it must have an imperceptible wrinkle.
    Well, I cracked it and sent it to SGC. It came back still a 4, so Graig was right. I still could not find the wrinkle, but it must be there, visible only with special technology. Oh well, it still looks like a 7 or better to my eye, and it's in a new and more attractive holder. If I sell, it probablty won't fetch as much as a PSA 4, but that was the risk I took in trying for a higher grade..

    My last PSA order had 2/3 of the cards graded 1 or more below what they should have received. Cracking slabs is fine. It is an opinion on a card and should be treated as such. It is the same as taking the card and putting it in another toploader. Now if you crack the card and give it a bath in Kurt's Card Care Juice, that is a completely different story.

    Football Question: As a Huge longtime 49ers Fan myself, I find it so frustrating and unbelievable that Roger Craig is still not in the Hall of Fame. Can you explain to me, how players like Larry Csonka and Leroy Kelly are in the Hall of Fame with similar stats running the ball, but weren't even close to Roger Craig in Receiving ability in the Hall and Roger is Not? Also Craig has more Super Bowl victories (3) than either of those two similar players. Do they just discount his Receiving ability completely? As you know, he was the very first player to ever have 1000 yards running and 1000 yards receiving in the same season, redefining the Running Back Position. He was also such a huge reason why the 49ers won those three Super Bowls that he played in.

      So I've been thinking about this question for 2 weeks and I don't know how to answer it in a way that would be interesting to folks beyond me and you and other 49er fans. Roger Craig was a vital part of the team through the mid to late 90s. He was really the very first RB who because a running and receiving threat. He was the heart and soul of the team in a lot of ways. His hands and speed is at the foundation of why the West Coast offense works. Not just that, but he's an awesome guy. Signs autographs through the mail even now....a class act with a million dollar smile. While, I didn't showcase this in a video, I think you and I both agree that he's an integral part of the 49er championships and in changing the game of football and the purpose and uses of running backs.

    What should be considered as Performance Enhancements? Did all of the alcohol Babe Ruth drank before and possibly during a game "enhance his performance?" Maybe all of the hot dogs eaten during a game were beneficial to greasing his fingers? Did all of the "tricks of the trade" like pine tar, dirt, spit and whatever else has been used before it got "regulated" keep any of the original pro players from being respected for their careers or out of "The Hall of Fame?" Using protein shakes and the like to increase muscle mass doesn't make you able to hit the ball, just makes you able to hit it harder. The skill acquired to hit the ball and to hit it better comes from practice and training to hit the ball, not from getting bigger muscles. Does Tommy John surgery count as "Performance Enhancement? How about surgery to repair backs and legs? If someone has "mastered" the ability to do something, they have done something to "Enhance their Performance." Unless every stadium is exactly the same, all players have to use the same brand and model of equipment, the players have to all be the same height and weight, then there is going to be advantages that someone could say that those differences are the reason for someone else doing better. Sammy didn't just start hitting more home runs because he got bigger. He became more focused on getting better, practiced a lot more and had more experience than when he started.

    I have a question that has frustrated me for several years now! I have a 1928 Babe Ruth card that was created by the George H Ruth Candy Company. This was Babe”s personal company and entrance into the sports card market. Mine is card number 2 of 6 total cards of Ruth, which is my favorite one of him posting and swinging full body. I like many others who own this card simply CANNOT get this card authenticated or graded by one player f the Big 4 grading companies! TPG has become a complete joke. So sad that someone feels they have to destroy their own nice card just to conform to PSA’s misguided self-imposed standards. They’ve ruined a formerly great hobby. I’ve cracked dozens of slabs, and have not had one single regret. And the BB Card Hall of Fame… horrible idea. Beauty is a personal thing, and no “institution” can dictate one card’s superiority over another.

      I think the BB Card Hall Of Fame is fun. Nothing to be taken too seriously. But you're right. We all have our definition as to what is or isn't a ''hall of fame'' card or player too, for that matter as well. If someone is a hall of famer to you. Great. If someone shouldn't be. That's great too.

    Regarding Clemens, He had a hall of fame career in Boston between 1984-1996. Then Boston's idiot general manager Dan Duquette decided not to re-sign him, believing Clemens was on the downside of his career. Clemens signed with Toronto in 1997 determined to prove he wasn't finished, and the juicing started in Toronto. I don't hate Clemens and never did. It was disappointing as a Red Sox fan to see him in a Yankees uniform though.

    2nd question and it is a hot topic right now. Where are you on the integration of Negro League records with MLB? It’s a touchy subject and a lot of people are throwing around “racism” for those that don’t believe they should be integrated. I’m not sure where I stand right now. There’s no denying that there were phenomenal players in that league…but was that league at the same skill level all the way around as MLB? I don’t know enough of either league in that time period to say yes or no to that. Just looking for your opinion. Completely understandable if you would rather avoid this one.

    This is a true story. There was a local dealer back in 1997 who told me to take my raw cards out of those screw down holders (this was pre-grading days). I always laughed at the guy as everyone had their grail cards in them in the 90’s, but he was absolutely correct. I don’t where that guy is these days but i owe him a big apology. This guy was also ahead of the curve on eye appeal as he would only sell centered cards back then and told me that was the future of the hobby.

    17:21 this question irks me. PSA needs to stop the screw down = automatic Altered grade. PSA already gives grades that make no sense… the “old slabs” are graded loosely. the fact that we all know not to buy an old 8, cause it’s clearly a 6… or possibly already trimmed, and it got past them.
    Should I feel bad, if I sell an old PSA 8, that’s over-graded? To a new collector, or a collector that “buys the number” Should I inform the seller with advanced knowledge, or just act like a corporation?
    I say if you own a card, you do whatever you want to it.
    If you then send it in, to PSA. It’s up to them to commodify it.
    Now you have a card that PSA graded…
    Maybe they overgrade, maybe they don’t, that happens with cards all day anyway.
    Grading! 😂😢
