Dang are people rude! I never comment but for those saying this was rushed - there is a wealth of information in the blog post that, had you taken the time to look hard enough, would have answered many of the questions(complaints) below. Thanks for the FREE, very helpful, content!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. You have inspired me to make one as a sort of a daybed. Very concise and to-the-point dictation, my favorite kind. I can't fail with these perfectly laid out instructions.
I want you to know you helped me create a comfortable space during this stay-at-home time. I made two cushions by hand (me, who does not sew!) because my sewing machine gives me too much grief.
Thank you for this tutorial! Just a little advice to anyone watching: Please wear the appropriately rated respirator when working with spray adhesive. It’s nasty stuff!
And now I understand why these are so expensive. YOU MADE THIS LOOK SO EASY. However, that curved needle and that whole "deal with the sides" is super intimidating.
You can do it! It's definitely time consuming, but it's easy work. I just plopped down in front of the TV for the night and watched my shows while I worked on my other cushions.
Thank you, I found this video very informational I've always been interested in see how this technique is done. Im doing a bus conversion and most everything is custom made DIY furniture the French mattress look will make for beautiful big cushions for the couch that transfers into a bed.😊👍👍👏👏
I make doggy beds for my 2 shepherds. Working with the foam, I use an electric knife. I spray silicone spray on the blades and then start cutting the foam. Goes so quickly and I have straighter lines.....
Hi Randi, this foam is 3 inches thick. The fabric is called Bella Velvet Caribbean: www.onlinefabricstore.com/morgan-fabrics-bella-velvet-caribbean-fabric-.htm
The dacron and the "padding", are the same thing right? In the 1st part, steps, your saying "dacron" and "padding" almost as if they're two separate parts but yet are the same material being used around the foam cushion. I think, but just checking to make sure I'm not missing a layer I should be having in this project.
Of course! The cushion itself didn't take more than an hour to make, so that was not bad. But the tufting does take quite some time. I would say that it probably took me close to two (maybe even three) hours to finish that up. It's pretty mundane work though so I recommend putting on a movie and just taking it slow.
I read that the batting helps make the edges of the foam smoother and more comfortable, I also saw that it prevents long term erosion of the foam but I can't say how true that is.
This is the foam - www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/how-to-make-a-french-mattress-cushion/ and this is the fabric - www.onlinefabricstore.com/morgan-fabrics-bella-velvet-caribbean-fabric-.htm
I am a very experienced sewist. I can't get my corners to match up. It doesn't matter how many times I clip and reclip the sides. I'm having such a hard time. I wish I'd done boxed corners instead. Zooming in to show how you sewed the corners would have been very helpful for me. I'm coming up short on my fabric on one end.
I want to modify this to create a baffled comforter. Instead of tufting and stuffing with foam, I'd like to create boxes that can be attached to each other somehow. Have you seen anyone try to make a truly baffled comforter or quilt, rather than just a box stitch or a puff quilt?
I think I would make a baffled comforter by stuffing each section individually as I sew a grid into the blanket. It is going to take more time, but that is going to give you the cleanest look
I've had 2 mattress that fit but are uncomfortable and spent lots of money but I want a daybed mattress that fits into existing iron frame...it's a small frame...show me one that is comfortable
We used Bella Upholstery Velvet Caribbean. You can find all the colors here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/product-group-velvet.aspx?application=upholstery&category=basic
Wow, that was rushed and unclear. The sewing part is easy. I was here for the tufted sides and had to watch several times to get the idea. Frankly I haven’t tried it yet because I don’t feel confident enough. Why? You talked to fast and moved without showing the actual technique. You appear to do beautiful work though.
Check out our blog post here - www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/how-to-use-dritz-half-ball-cover-buttons/ It gives a written description and photos that may help you figure it out. Hope that helps!
I agree...rushed and unclear. Very tasteful and well made. It looks great. Also annoying..."bu' 'on" and "tigh'en". That said, you are the Joyce van Patten of fabric.

Rushed? No way! Straight to the point and easy to understand. Maybe people need to learn the basics and return to this when they are ready.
Some people need others to live the hard part of life for them… most likely they expected someone to buy everything & make it for them!
Very good vision. Got right to the job with no silly small talk that too many people do. Thank you❤
You're very welcome!
Thank you for telling me ask the proper words for this. I read looking for tutorials and couldn't find the proper words !
Wow a whirlwind of an explanation 😮

I am so happy we could help! hope all is well with you :)
Thanks for the easy, straightforward tutorial! It was exactly what I needed!! 😀
Glad it helped!
Thanks!!!
And clips instead of pins! Excellent!
This was amazing! I always wondered what those curved upholstery needles were for. 😄
Thanks so much for doing this! I’m not much of a sewer but I was looking for a video like this to make this type of cushion. It was really helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Truly amazing. Gave me some great ideas for upcoming projects. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for this tutorial! Just a little advice to anyone watching: Please wear the appropriately rated respirator when working with spray adhesive. It’s nasty stuff!
If I could find a respirator for sale to the general public I would be the richest woman in Texas lol
And now I understand why these are so expensive. YOU MADE THIS LOOK SO EASY. However, that curved needle and that whole "deal with the sides" is super intimidating.

Well done. Simple and beautiful.
Glad you like it!
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing.
Great to hear! You are very welcome!!
Perfect tutorial! Thank you!!!

I am so happy we could help! Best of luck with your bus!! That is so fun!
I’m doing exactly the same thing! How did yours turn out?
it would have been nice if you could have showed us the process of creating the side stitch for longer!
Not even the whole cushion, but one side would have been great. We didn't even get top and bottom of the sides. Not one complete scallop?
It is self explanatory. Just do the same thing over and over again. That is all sewing is.
Slowing the playback speed really helps!
Beautiful
Fantastic site. Thank you for your streams.
Beautiful thank you- I shall do for my bay window! ❤
Beautiful, thanks for sharing.
Thank You! I've always wondered how thise edges were made!
You are so welcome!
You made it look so easy. thank you for sharing.
It is really easy! It is just time consuming.
I make doggy beds for my 2 shepherds. Working with the foam, I use an electric knife. I spray silicone spray on the blades and then start cutting the foam. Goes so quickly and I have straighter lines.....
Interesting! Thanks for the tip!
this would be so cute as matching daybed mattress and dog pillow. I think I'll do that actually
I love that!
lovely! thank you.
Our pleasure! Happy it helped!
How thick is your piece of foam? How many yards of fabric did you use? Is it a velour? Can you link the fabric?
Hi Randi, this foam is 3 inches thick. The fabric is called Bella Velvet Caribbean: www.onlinefabricstore.com/morgan-fabrics-bella-velvet-caribbean-fabric-.htm
Wow
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hhmm I’m going to try this minus the tufting on my sofa cushion.
Good luck!
It would be so helpful if you had the links to the videos you talked about with the buttons and the closing stitch!
Thanks wonderfull
You are so welcome!😊
🥰Thank you!
You’re welcome 😊

Tanks
It looks amazing! How long did it take to make?
Thanks, it did take a while! Two of us worked on it for two days, a couple hours each day. But it was worth it!
Sewing mattresses
how do i make it round
Thanks for the tutorial.. Love the look. How long did it take you to make the cushion?
Of course! The cushion itself didn't take more than an hour to make, so that was not bad. But the tufting does take quite some time. I would say that it probably took me close to two (maybe even three) hours to finish that up. It's pretty mundane work though so I recommend putting on a movie and just taking it slow.
Thank you for the tutorial! Is the batting necessary? Not sure if I could skip?
I read that the batting helps make the edges of the foam smoother and more comfortable, I also saw that it prevents long term erosion of the foam but I can't say how true that is.
This is a great answer! All of those things are true.
I was reading through these comments to see what kind of “padding” I was supposed to buy. And now I know it’s “batting”!
I was wondering what kind of foam you're using and what kind of fabric?
This is the foam - www.onlinefabricstore.com/makersmill/how-to-make-a-french-mattress-cushion/
and this is the fabric - www.onlinefabricstore.com/morgan-fabrics-bella-velvet-caribbean-fabric-.htm

You could always try sewing each piece of boxing to the corresponding side and then sew the corners after the fact!
I'm also looking for matters mekar 👇
👍

how thick was your foam
I used 3" upholstery foam!
Can this type of cushion be used if you're making your own sofa
Absolutely!
So.... I should go buy the one on wayfair then LOL WOW I can't do that
YOU CAN DO IT!
I've had 2 mattress that fit but are uncomfortable and spent lots of money but I want a daybed mattress that fits into existing iron frame...it's a small frame...show me one that is comfortable
😃
What type of fabric is used in this tutorial?
We used Bella Upholstery Velvet Caribbean. You can find all the colors here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/product-group-velvet.aspx?application=upholstery&category=basic
Well, that looks easy enough, but I'm afraid putting the huge foam part inside is going to be a challenge.
👍👏👏👏
You sounda like Caroline Forbes aka candice king from TVD
,,😍🥰👏👏👏🤗🙋🇵🇪😘
👍😊🌹👏
you skipped the end soooo quickly..
Thanks for the vidéo, juste for information it's not a french matress it's a marocain matress.
Why not just continue with the same thread instead of cutting it for every tuft?
Just a correction - this is not French, this was imported from North Africa!!!!
Using spray adhesive without a mask is insanity
It's a really really good idea to use spray adhesive without a mask. Because lungs are totally replaceable.
I'm still messing this up.

You can watch the video several times
You didn’t even show the process lol this was horrible
It’s beautiful, but it sounds like a lot of nasty chemicals (foam, adhesive...). 😬
You could always use 100% cotton fill or down.
Hella confused....
No tuenes ni idea de costura
I agree...rushed and unclear. Very tasteful and well made. It looks great. Also annoying..."bu' 'on" and "tigh'en". That said, you are the Joyce van Patten of fabric.
G H and "shring" instead of string!
Wow, I did not expect people to be criticising accents on DIY tutorials!
Wow, really? lol this is sewing. She’s at least not tired sounding like a lot of sewing channels
What a bunch of rude comments!
