Retrospectrum: Bob Dylan’s America | Art Loft

The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at FIU hosts Restrospectrum. This exhibit marks the debut exhibit of the singer and poet’s visual works in the United States. Frost Director Jordana Pomeroy, PhD shares the exhibit with us and talks about the timeless quality of Dylan’s visual practice. The exhibit is at the Frost through April 17, 2022.

I remember being impressed as a young man by Dylan's seemingly perennial quest to learn as an artist, musically. He seemed never to be satisfied. Even after reaching the pinnacle he was always struggling to grow. He was always more concerned with the art itself, the quest for sublime expression, than commercial popularity. His drawings and paintings when he started out, like about fifty years ago, were always interesting, if rather primitive. Now he has mastered the brush. Wow! This is like Dante Gabriel Rosseti meets Edward Hopper. The man continues to awe and mystify.

Multidimensional mind that is further aided by a clarity of purpose and will to action. It is a real surprise to me to learn that Bob Dylan is a masterful draftsman and painter. Maybe that is not entirely my lapse, as I have yet to see a book about his visual art in my big city's library. I am now more motivated than ever to get serious about the production end of my artistic life. (Too many great ideas sitting in sketch books.)
