- That's right. Over a period of two days raccoons killed my flock of 30 chickens, even though I was using electric poultry netting (they figured out how to climb the side of the barn and get around the fence. When I set up my game cameras, I was surprised to see that a red fox was also getting into the chicken run (maybe by jumping the fence?). I set up live traps, a leg-hold, and a dog-proof raccoon trap to clear out these predators so I can restart my flock. Predators are just one of many homestead challenges.

Something similar happened to me but to a family of mink. We were away for 2 days and They killed 28 of my meat birds that were 2 weeks away from processing. And 11 of my layer hens
Minks and other pests of the sort are arguably the worst

I trapped 23 raccoons in one barn, they were eating the feed for the show steers and tearing stuff up. I never got them all
That's a lot of raccoons! I'm not on an agricultural area and we have a low raccoon density. Because of that, it's easy to forget about them until they come out of nowhere and cause you all kinds of grief.
Sorry for your Los young man. We lost ours to a fox.

Tragedy strikes.
We had an experience with raccoons a couple years ago.
We never had a problem in 7 years, and then one weekend the winter Strom dipped to sub Arctic,
And a bunch of raccoons killed a bunch of our chickens.
The worst thing, was that they killed dozens of birds, and mostly only ate heads.
Left all the meat. It was Tragic.
Wouldnt have been so bad, if they had killed a bird to eat,
Might have been a couple birds each.

For some reason, these raccoons took all the bodies away and only left two dead birds behind.

I think denuding the entire area of native wildlife is a fantastic idea because you choose to be lazy, irresponsible and ignorant.
I think you misunderstand me. I actually do a lot of wildlife conservation on a couple of hundred acres of property. I took all the precautions to keep my chickens safe but the raccoons found a work-around and came back night after night after night. I never trapped the fox, because I'm sure it helps keep my squirrel population down. I have weasel tracks all around my barn but I'm fairly confident that it is more interested to eat rodents than to bother my chickens. These raccoons were intent on destroying my entire flock and they also got into my neighbour's chicken coop as well. I think that once they become chicken predators you have to take measures to remove them.
Plus, there are a million (literally) raccoons in Ontario.
@OneWildcrafter if you cant build a predator proof coop then maybe you need to go back and play with your Lincoln log set some more.
