Cylinder Head 104 - Remove Valves & Springs

  • Just one of many ways to remove valves from a cylinder head. I haven't seen a valve compressor like this one on RUclips yet. I know it's nobody makes them like this, because this one is a custom hack job specifically for 4g63 heads... but it's extremely effective and easy to use.
    Since I don't own a valve grinder, valve spring pressure testers (for installed height measurement), or valve seat grinding stones... there are several services I'm unable to perform myself. But since I can get the head disassembled to this state, it would be easier and cheaper for me to have them serviced by someone who does.
    Valve grinding machine time is cheaper if they don't have to tear down the head. You can lap them in yourself, but if the seat's in really bad shape, it will require attention to allow any of those efforts to be worthwhile.
    Valve seat grinding if necessary needs to be done with the proper tools, and if the seats must be replaced, then it can get expensive. Usually $20-ish a hole. Sometimes an oversized bore can be cut into a factory seat. I'm ordering a set of valves to see if that's possible.

    came across your channel looking for a quick demonstration for removing axle carrier bearing and ended up watching most of your valve train videos also. Just wanted to remark that I find your production style very informative, clear, economical and to the point. Thank you and... "I'll be back."

    Great video. Question; how long do you have to lap the valve for 2. Should they have any leak 3. I put my head back on the block out some water in both the intake and exhaust , some were still leakinfpg does mean I have to do it some more. Thanks for the help with block feedback.

    I've seen many "Toolmakers" or "Engineers" over the years spent working in local toolmaking factories, many Guys that came and went were totally useless, as in they would never make an engineer as long as they had a hole up their arse.
    The "Great" toolmakers were few and far between, but they always stood out from the crowd.
    I may have said it before, but Im looking at one of those Guys right now who stands out from the crowd, I just know one when I see one. :-))
    Have a nice day..Paul :-)

    Hello Jafro, nice videos! I have 4G64 GDI but it's in general the same thing. If you use this tool and MD998772 why there's no need to hold valve from other side? I've use screw clamp but it was a little bit tricky :) What fliuds do use to clean valves and channels in zylinder head. Thanks!

    Do the valves HAVE to go in the same spot they were before? Say if they were knocked over where you had them and mixed them up..

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  10 лет назад +2

      IF that happened, then I would recommend at the very least... lapping and checking each one to make sure it seals. The reason this is important is because the sealing surfaces of the valve and the seat bed together over time, and the shape of the seat changes. IF you did a valve job and cut every valve and seat the same, you don't have to keep them in order. It's only with used valves. Used valves have to match their used seats.

    Need to do valve job on my Infiniti FX45, 4.5 litre dual OHC engine, 32 valves, started to smoke suddenly very bad, I think valve stemseals are gone??, No power lost, or any noice... just terrible smoking, and "drinks" oil a lot, half a quart every couple days??=(( planning to hone cylinders and replace pistonrings at same time. You think I could sand/grind my valves by hand?/ And how much "freeplay" sideways your valves could have without replacing valveguides?? Or replace valves?? Only has 120000 miles..., doing a work myself, done couple complete engine rebuilds before, but never on 32 valve engine. Also, can I do adjusting valves, when heads are off the engine, would be so much easier with shims...., will replace timing changes same time too!! Thanks, youtheman =)

    Hey Jafro! When you're pushing down on the valve springs it looks like it jarrs suddenly when you get past a certain point, why does it do that? Are you basically pushing past a little dimple there or? Do you think more Japanese cars would act the same?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 лет назад +1

      +Striball The keepers are lightly-tapered, and so are the holes they fit in. That's what actually holds them together. Over time, the keepers get hammered into the retainer hole so tight that it takes a significant force to pop them loose. It's really no different than how the tapered studs of ball joints tend to get fused into the knuckles of hub assemblies and have to be beaten free with a hammer, only the keepers are so small that they're pretty easy to separate with the valve spring tool.

    Completely unrelated but are you still going to use the Ebay 20g on youre GSX and personally would you use an Ebay GT35 ($300) or a used Presicion GT35 ($625) im thinking about getting the used one but getting opinions from other people lol.

    Hey man! Great video!
    I''m currently rebuilding a miata head, and the keepers wont come out when compressing the spring... tried compressed air to make it budge, but it won't work.
    I don't really want to try the hammer and socket method, as I could damage the head...
    Any tips to get the keepers out? Thank you very much!

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  5 лет назад

      Compress the spring with all you've got and use a magnet. The keepers are magnetic.

    If you do that video, that would be great for most of the DSM crowd as well as for me, being a metric guy, but please, don't go all in inches! If you do, please, show some formulas so I could convert it to metric system without finding books with basic physics for imperial inches! Thank you man!
    p.s. I'm trying to build few weird engines, here in Russia, and I've found some new >>cheap

    Hey! Btw, can you do a video on taking spring pressures off the existing valve springs? I mean, I've bought a ProForm valve spring tool from Summit and it basically measures pressure of a compressed spring (just tighten it up in a simple shop vice). I've got some numbers and I got lost. Most of the springs (especially dual ones) are not linear. Basically I can find if a spring is harder or softer that some other. But I can't really get the numbers for seat pressure and full lift pressure. Thx!

  • @TrueBlueEG8
    @TrueBlueEG8 12 лет назад

    Does no one use a socket and a hammer any more? But seriously , that tool really makes short work of it, I would love one for the b series hondas, but what i would like even more is a decent tool for pulling those damn stem seals off, the honda ones are a proper pain in the arse to get off. Another great informative video from the jafro man, he is a really helpful fella :-)

    make this tool bet you you can't keep up with demand. looked all over for this or anything close. no go. can use the socket and hammer to remove them but need a compressor for install. I'd buy this in a heart beat. just press remove next valve. no removing the die from cam cap to cam cap. I want this thing

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  7 лет назад +1

      I know, I want one, too! I had to give it back to its owner, and all I've got is measurements. Precisely the reason you stated is why I never started making them. Nobody I'm aware of makes this tool, and the base of that one was salvaged from a scrap pile. It's either un-obtanium, or make-it-yourselfium. I'll make one after things in my garage settle back down again. It looks like I've got a high likelihood of needing it again and again.

    So let me get this right.. you show a video about how to remove valves but have the camera too far away to actually see how the damn things are held in and undone?
    Then when you do show it close up its in fast forward.
    What was the point? - I am still none the wiser how they're held in or how to remove them.
