    What you found on day 1 was probably plastic. I had these ready meals at Uni and I noticed that the packaging was changed last year, making the container prone to breaking in the microwave.

    It's a shame the chips and curry didn't come separate because I'm finding that oven fried chips and such actually turn out quite nice but you can't get crispy chips when they're slathered in a sauce.

    For people wondering why he still liked meals even when he was sick and tired of eating frozen food and felt gross--I did basically the exact same thing for a while early in college, though about half of what I ate were Pizza Rolls. The thing is, Pizza Rolls are the king of frozen food, and they taste awesome. And you can put them with other things and they still taste awesome. But while it tastes good and fine in isolation, the lack of vitamins eventually gets to you--yes they still taste good, but you regret it more and more, feeling pasty lethargic in the head even if your mouth is content (if a bit numb from sodium drag)
    Not to mention, frozen meals tend to have a preservative flavor that tastes really samey in aggregate even if you can't pick it out in every individual meal.
    Eat your vegetables, kids. Even if you still smother everything in cheese, add some leafy greens, carrots, peppers, onions, fresh tomatoes, something! The cheese will cover up the flavor anyway!

    to Mike J
    Thank you for making these videos, I have found them very interesting. I also feel that watching these videos may help to explain some things (like why I may wake up with a horrible headache after having a whole bag of salty snacks the night before). So thank you again.
    Also, as someone who lives in rural northern Canada, I am (as always) flabbergasted by how cheap food is, in other places in the world.

    Typically I get frozen sundries (chips, pizza's etc from Iceland) and tend to eat with a mix of fresh meat and veg from a butchers/grocers. I spend about £35 a week on food for 2 people and usually end up with enough left over that after one week shopping I get in what I call a "luxuries week" where I grab me some ice cream and good coffee. In general though, mixing the occasional ready meal with healthy eating doesn't do anyone any major harm and depending on your work patterns (I just recently finished working in pubs) ready meals can mean a big difference, working mainly nights, I could easily spend £5+ an evening on take-aways, but instead find a ready meal really helps save my wallet for something just as bad. A lot of people comment that it's hard to feed a large family, and granted it is, but I've learned eating smarter is the key.

    You discovered an important lesson about reheating food or reheating ready-meals: they're better on the stove or in the oven.
    The microwave has its place: thawing or defrosting, warming things up, and even cooking bacon pretty well. But the ready-meals are better done at half power on twice the time, for just this reason. You also don't have to let them cool quite as long, and the heating is more thorough. But also, the oven and stove do the work through thermal energy, not by using higher bandwidth energy to cause water molecules to vibrate.
    The extra weight was probably just water retention.

    Gotta say, you guys over in the UK have a lot of patience. 9 minutes is more than I've ever had to microwave something off the top of my head. I also don't think I'd have the patience to ever cook one of those things in the oven. 45 minutes for a legitimate dinner? Sure. 45 Minutes for something called a "ReadyMeal"? I'm too impatient for that.

  • @morphman86
    @morphman86 10 лет назад

    First off: Congratulations on surviving the week!
    Now to the meat of the issue (hurr hurr hurr): This is how you know someone usually eat their chicken with some sauce or something that covers it. The reddish part is not blood (as if undercooked) but the part of the chicken that is closest to the bones, just to the side of the breast part. That's what's usually referred to as the "dark meat" of the chicken. The reason it is in the middle is because the chicken has been shredded and then rolled together again (which is only slightly better than the "nugget" version, which has been minced and then pressed together again).

      hal lourious I think he meant some people can only afford this level of food. A few years ago I would go lol crap! These days however, due to the current UK's government's delight in treating the poor as the scum of the universe I would say his comment is entirely accurate.
      Plus working hours etc some mothers or fathers probably don't get home till 7pm weekdays. Plus so many single parent families lately in the UK that I doubt they have time or energy to do fresh food. I am sorry however as this was far too serious for this comment section. So i will say penguins to rebalance it.

    • @hallarious506
      @hallarious506 9 лет назад +3

      Anna Zero
      I know what he means. It is still a stupid comment.
      It's like when people talk about how they liked a movie or a tv show and someone comes in and tells that children are dying in Africa.
      It's not wrong what he says, but it is still a nonsensical offtopic commentary.
      Besides this: This kind of food is NOT cheap. It's far more expensive than making it yourself with better quality. This is one portion of Chips and Sauce for what? 1 or 2 pounds.
      For 4 or 5 you could have bought enough credencials for three or four days (always depending what and where you are buying of course).
      In Aldi a chicken Sandwich costs roughly two pounds. Make it yourself and it costs you not even 50 ps.

    Mike, with regards to frozen veg vs "fresh", frozen are actually more fresh than fresh from the shops. Frozen retain more nutrients and degrade much slower than so-called "fresh". With regards to weight gain, in your case, all the salt caused water retention, which is where the weight came from. You probably lost half a pound of fat. With regards to calorie RDA, 2500 is for the average man. Sedentary men, such as office workers, writers and RUclips personalities need closer to 2000 to maintain a healthy weight.

    When the best description you can use to sell your frozen meals is "cooked" .... isn't that a bad sign for what's to come?

    Alternative week - £12 - 4 portion of fresh meat, good for 2 days each. £2 - eggs for a week, £2 - milk for a week. £6 - veggies, £4 - Fresh fruit. £3 - cereal £6 - sandwich meats and other bits to make up meals.

      Looks about 1.5x as expensive, actually. Also I think people predominantly eat this kind of food out of laziness/apathy as much as $$$.

      seigeengine It's seriously not cheaper to buy frozen shit; you get more value out of the fresh food.

      Crazy Hans
      Honestly speaking that's not true. He was buying only ready made meals so that is why it was so expensive and also why it was so unhealthy. Certain produce is better to buy frozen to avoid wastage due to rotting.

    I spend anywhere from 11 to 13 dollars a day on food, which would be about 8 pounds. That's only one a single meal. 35 pounds is what I spend in about 3 days worth, so for a week, that's not too bad.

    Le Science Timez! The weight gain, as you surmised, can probably be attributed to your increased salt intake. Your body is retaining more water than usual to try and keep you hydrated. Going consistently under on your calorie and fat intake may have some effect on the weight gain as well. It's basically telling your body "pickings may be lean right now. Hold onto everything you can get". The yucky lack-of-energy feeling is most likely the result of ingesting the MASSIVE amounts of additives and preservatives that nearly all frozen processed foods have.
    Prescribed regime is, again as you said, load up on the fruits and veg, get your calorie/fat intake back up to normal, avoid sodium, and keep drinking lots of water to help purge your body of all the salt and chemicals.
    Neat experiment! Thank you for punishing your body for our amusement! :p
