  • Welcome back to KJ All Day with KJ Wright and Gee Scott. On this episode, KJ and Gee welcomes one of the best wide receivers in Seahawks history, Doug Baldwin.
Doug Baldwin talks about people calling him "angry Doug" and where that comes from, going un-drafted to becoming one of Pete Carroll's favorite players.
Doug opens up about his mental health and how that lead to him retiring in his prime.
KJ gets emotional as he shares the story of when he broke his foot and how dedicated he was to rehabbing in order to make it back to play in the Super Bowl.
The guys also debate who created the culture during those Super Bowl years, was it the players or Pete Carroll/coaches.
Listen and watch KJ All Day every Monday morning and check out KJ's Instagram and TikTok for highlights.

12s, we had some unfortunate audio technical difficulties during the interview with Doug and didn't see the issue until the team started editing. The audio file was damaged 😭 We were completely torn between reshooting or throwing the episode away. We felt like we had such a magical interview with Doug that couldn't be duplicatable. Doug really brought us into his world and we appreciate him for doing so.
I want to share this interview with you. The audio is from a backup track. This error won't happen again.
I appreciate each and every one of you. Enjoy this awesome interview with Doug.

Gee: "Like KJ just said, I didn't play. I didn't coach. But my most memorable moment was: I was the car wash dude. And my most memorable moment is the fact that because of y'all my life is changed forever. So I am literally living proof of how great you guys were. Let me say that again: KJ's right, I wasn't a coach, I wasn't a player. I was the damned car wash dude. Struggling financially - barely keeping my head above water. But because you guys were so successful MY life changed. So my most memorable moment is right now. Being able to say, 'thank you. I appreciate y'all.'"
    That made me cry.

I don't think players will ever TRULY understand what it means to their fans. I don't blame them, it's probably not humanly possible but the joy and pride they bring to millions of people by going out there and balling out is mind blowing. I guess you could say we support them by spending money but it doesn't feel fair when I go out and boast about our team's wins.

Since Doug is the type that can only give honest answers, the things he avoided talking about spoke volumes. It’s a shame things couldn’t have lasted longer. Doug will never get the recognition he truly deserves. On one hand, Seattle was the one place that gave him the opportunity to prove he was special. On the other hand, it was an offense that never would take full advantage of his skill set. He’s a HOF talent player, but handicapped by where he played and length of career. He had one of the best releases in a generation. He could line up in a closed phone booth and still get 3 yards separation.

So to sum it up, for those unable to read between the lines: Baldwin and other members of the team thought Russ wasn't being held accountable and was being coddled by the coaching staff, which led to a division within the team and the team culture suffered because of it. This also tracks with what has been previously reported/rumored.

Doug is my favorite WR and he was a joy to watch on the field! I loved his big brother connection with ‘Little Locket’. I’ll never forget the scary, gruesome hit Tyler had and how emotional Doug was crouched next to Tyler praying with him. Ricardo Lockett and Tyler both had scary moments that were hard to watch unfold on the field. Those moments show the character of certain elite players that are the glue holding a team’s spirit and culture together.
I think Doug would be an excellent head coach! It’s because of his honesty, integrity, and work ethic that make him an ideal head coach for our Hawks. So Doug, if you read this please know that you have the leadership skills that make you the right guy for the job when Pete does retire. Meanwhile, I’m a believer in bringing key elite guys from the LOB era team onboard NOW! I think after Bobby retires he’d be fantastic too! There is so much LOB talent living in Seattle that I bet guys would jump at the chance to actively work with the team to pump up the machismo and player discipline into the guys on the team. It’s a smart business move for the Seahawks and if not now, then they’re not capitalizing on ready-made talent residing in the Seattle area and in 12s’ blue & green hearts!
    Go Hawks!💙💚

I know y'all hear it probably everyday but I will never stop saying it so hopefully it never gets old but I want you all to know how damn special that SB era team was and meant to us fans. It felt like the whole team, coaches, fans and city of Seattle were all connected and we could all feel that special energy that this team had, it was contagious and it just felt amazing! Even if we never get another Super Bowl win again for the rest of my life I know I can rest peacefully knowing I got to witness my Team, my City bring home that championship trophy 🏆 in what was one of the most dominant Super Bowls in the history of the NFL against the "best offense of all time"!!! KJ, listening to you and Doug discuss being out of the League reminded me of something and I couldn’t put my finger on it.
Then it hit me…it’s how my Infantry buddies and I talk sometimes about being deployed. Not the same level of intensity but the same “My God…what do I do now that I’m out?”. Veterans might be the only people who can really understand, even at a distance, what you guys were dealing with.
It might be a good idea to hook retired football players up with the same resources Veterans use.

Just started listening to this but Doug is a real one. He is one of the few guys who actually puts the time in to help reform the criminal justice system. Getting involved is the most patriotic thing a person can do, especially when you are wealthy and could ignore these social justice issues entirely. Doug was a great Seahawk and Seattle should be immensely proud of the person he is off the field too.

Best interview y’all have done yet. I appreciate Doug’s candidness and G pushing for clarity. Pete has always talked about how special Doug was to him and almost like a son, to hear Doug confirm that he and Pete had that connection did the soul good. It’s not just Pete saying cliche coach stuff, he was really on the same page with Doug.
If Deion can coach now, Doug should absolutely be able to coach without getting flack. Doug knows what it takes and understands what culture does to an organization…shit I’ll say it: Coach Baldwin 2026

That Superbowl XLIX ending will haunt me until this team wins another ring. I remember constantly looking the play-by-play breakdown on FieldGulls with Kearse missing his rub route and jammed at the line of scrimmage, Lockett getting basically getting blown up on the play, and Russell throwing a questionable pass. It was just heart wrenching. I always thought that running a naked bootleg play or throwing a corner route in the endzone would have made immensely more sense (especially with targeting Doug), or just running the ball up the middle.
On another note, I noticed the culture shifting around 2017 after the Jimmy Graham trade, I think Doug is spot on with the assertion of accountability and tenacity being called into question over the years. It seemed like the persistence and prowess of the team radically shifted, and the hunger and drive wasn't nearly the same.

I believe the lack of heart in the team hurt him more then his injuries. Transparency is what he expects, heart on his sleeve type of guy. If it wasn't for his love of the team, he would be looked at as selfish... Opposite attitude of "The one who wants to be great"!

KJ, I hope this podcast helps you and the rest of the team process the emotions of that superbowl loss. With each former teammate you bring on, the pain is still so evidently raw. Sending healing energies to each of you.

What I wish Doug and KJ know and realise is that you brought us a Super Bowl! Our first! The memories you have our different to what we have but we share the same memory of you boys lifting the trophy. Thank you for everything and I wish you guys all the health and happiness in the world.

KJ this was a great interview. I really appreciated how you and Doug worked, or are still working through the mental health aspect of your lives. Alot of us who never were part of a team like that still struggle with things, and question themselves, but seeing you guys go through it as well will hopefully help people, especially men, talk about these things more often. Thank you.

Wow... incredible watch. As a fan from day one that has only missed one game. Thank you, I could not quit watching this. Now I am really wondering about Kam and what he has dealt with or still dealing with. You all were so real in this. Sorry, I am at a loss for the right word.

These guys are experiencing an emotional loss that everyone goes through when you retire. Of course, I didn't have the skillsets these guys have, but I still went through a level of depression when I retired. You lose a set of friends, you lose your sense of self-worth, you lose your sense of accomplishment. It takes time to figure it out.

When Doug and KJ talk about that game in San Diego, I was there that day. As a fan in the stands, I’ve never experienced heat like that at a game. Can only imagine how difficult it was playing in that game!

Fans always knew that play... that ending was rough and was so make or break. The whole idea that if we won that game, we were going back for another one, there's a dynasty.
But I don't think a lot of us realized how much you guys are still hurting viscerally by it, the way Pete and others handled it afterword. Just know fans still love you guys and don't fault anybody for that outcome, and we're happy you call Seattle home.
