Me! My dad gave a used 870 Wingmaster 30+ years ago. Still have it and works 100%. Also have two Express in 20 and .410. No issues with those. All three been used a lot for hunting. Love them. Love shotguns, but I prefer them very old (50+ years), like the Win 1897, Win Model 12, Ithaca 37, etc.
13 minutes of talking about how many problems it has without actually mentioning a problem. Get to the point man. Listing features it doesn't have that Mossberg does isn't listing problems. That said I've had my express for almost 16 years now and the ONLY day I had a problem with it was a cold winter day where the outside temps were around 8 degrees or so and nothing would rack. I haven't tried a new one so I really can't say if the quality is still solid or not.
Got a remi 870 2 months ago in 2 months ago no problems, this guy lacks in knowledge , got one bad gun used from someone who probably didnt take care of it and shits on an entire company , luckily I'm not the only person here who thinks this
Never have had a problem with my original 870 Express (built around 2011) or the two 6+1 Tactical 870's I bought for each of my sons (built around 2023).
@David Kuykendall if you want a real 870, get a wingmaster used or new. Used ones be found at reasonable prices and freedom group ones are just as good if not. Better. (I have both)
my son have one 870 never malfunctioned. Not once so far. Several hundreds even 1-2k shells. Working glawlessly so far . Bought in early 2018 working fine.
James that could be true. I’ve had issues with bulk Winchester loads in the past. Their shells are really soft so they probably swell to the point they lodge in the chamber.
James I wouldn’t be against blaming the gun if it was a Walmart knock off. Either way the Express isn’t the best gun ever but just because you have issues out the box on a 300 dollar gun doesn’t make it garbage.
I have 2 newer 870 models and both run flawlessly. I would trust my life to either of them. The Super Mag has put a ton of dove and quail in my freezer and the Tac14 is just a blast to play with at the range. Both guns eat everything from bird shot to magnum buck shot and slug loads. I have shot many 500s 590s and 870s alike. I got nothing bad to say about a Mossberg but I like the way a Remington feels and shoots over a Mossberg all day long.
The Remington 870 WINGMASTERS, were the number one choice for hunters, shooters and Law Enforcement. You have the express, the cheaper, more affordable one. That’s where your missing quality has gone.
Konstantinos Dimitriou the wingmaster is on a better quality control then express line my opinion the 870 is still good as long as it’s the wingmaster, police, or marine magnum but other then that I agree with video the express line is crap.
I believe it's the ammo. I've heard people complain about the bulk boxes of ammo at Wal-Mart. About how the shells expand therefore causing jams to occur! That's just my opinion!
I avoid Winchester ammo like the plague. The 12 gauge ammo, the .22 bulk ammo, I’ve had problems with them in multiple guns. They jam, and often misfire. Good ammo if you’re just going to the range but for anything serious stay away from them
Terribly Tactical Bruh. You’re using out of spec ammunition. Wanna know why mossbergs run Winchester target loads? Because mossbergs have loose tolerances. Remingtons haven’t ran Winchester EVER. Not the wingmasters, not the police, not the express models. If your basis for Remingtons being garbage being because it doesn’t run bad ammo then I don’t know what to say
Mossberg is junk. Scheels don't even carry them because too many problems. Put 2 parts in an 870 and I'll put it up against anything. Volquartsen edge extractor and polish chamber. You got the best pump on the market. 25 dollar part.
@@TerriblyTactical Everyone needs to say when their Remingtons were manufactored when they say they have no malfunctions or they say they fail. I just asked some on a current Reddit discussion when their 870 was made. Everyone recommending a 870 in the discussion have ones from the 70's or early 80's. Recommending a 870 to someone now needs to always include the recommendation to buy an old one.
I think Remington has gone through a bad phase a few years ago, but I think they fixed a lot of their issues. My new 700 and 870 are fine, nothing wrong with them.
Bought mine last year. Put a couple thousand rounds in it. Runs perfect. And yes 250 shells every weekend for months. I have the hardwood home defense. Love it.
Well if that's true then that's good but I have seen in person multiple failures with my own and others 870s of modern time as well as all the videos out there of such. It really is a shame because the 870 is such a classic but in today's market buyer beware for sure!
I love my 870s and I definitely agree that QC went a bit down hill after freedom group acquired Remington but I’ve never had a single problem with any of mine old or new…but if the quality bothers some people there are a few very cheap upgrades that could give you peace of mind…he says in the video that the extractor isn’t replaceable but they are and you can replace the MIM factory one with a machined one for about 12$ and 5 minutes of your time. You can also replace the carrier dog spring for just a few dollars to improve feeding reliability but again I personally have never had an issue with that either…and one more easy thing to do is polish the chamber….if you do these three simple and cheap things you basically have a police magnum minus the metal trigger guard and the machining marks on the receiver but that’s just cosmetic anyways
Winchester Low brass and Remington dont get along, As a instructor, I see This all the time. Most Non Low Brass Ammo will run, Try it and it Should Work
Yeah, mine has shells get stuck in the magazine tub throat. Every once in a while I get a box that the shells get stuck. Im going to have to grind the tooling marks out of the magazine.
It was bnib but on consignment so yes it had a previous owner but he had never fired it. Also you can search the problem of shell extraction with these guns here on RUclips and find hundreds of videos on the same issue
Mossberg pump definitely a great shotgun but I also own the 870 express the cheaper modern one and it hasn’t failed me yet. Full and modified choke and rifled slugs from Winchester or federal and etc it’s never given me a problem for turkey hunting or deer hunting or even skeet. I guess it’s all about preference though.
I have 2 of those 870 wingmaster. Both of them I bought them used. Both of them have a 30 inch barrel and full choke. Man these shotguns kick ass. I've shot ducks at very very high distances and sometimes I cannot believe the shots I've made and the birds I've kill that far. The first 870 I bought it 6 years ago and I had to drive 3 hrs to get it becase the dont have them everywhere so i did some research on the internet and madr some phone calls and found it in a gun shop 3 hrs away from home. The second one i found it in my home town by accident,I walked in a gun shop asking for a good air rifle for pest control but then saw the 870 on the shelve for sale and said to the guy forget about the air rifle im buying this gun. I am beyong happy with my two 870 wingmasters and i will never get rid of them for any reason.
Terribly Tactical hey hey, I was just saying, i liked the video, good info here. Just that analogy made my head explode just a little, lol. But what do I know, I own an 870 and an f150.
A few years back I had issues with the Winchester Walmart shells. I was also having them jam in my Mossberg. Another person with me was having the same problem. I wasn’t any of the guns it was the Winchester shells. I checked the forums and people were issuing the same complaints. Winchester went cheap and were using aluminum and they would swell up in the chamber. The problems mentioned in the forum I was on went back to 2012 and up through 2017 about the time I was trying to figure out what was going on. When we switched to the Federal boxes the problems were solved for everyone.
True! My friend has a Remington 870 that his dad passed down to him and that thing is still kicking butt. Built like a tank. So I bought one as my first shotgun, however, mine wasn’t so much a tank. Day one jamming. Everyone was saying you just gotta break it in, and kept telling me that throughout my jamming issue. Today, it has gotten worse. it jams after every shot. Not easy to break the jam, but now warranty is done, and I realize that thousands of rounds later, it was “broken in” a long time ago! I must have gotten a lemon or something, but never again.
I know this is two years ago but try replacing the extractor with a machined one to replace the cheap, stamped (MIM) extractor that the newer versions came with. I too was having extraction issues but since I've replaced the extractor (with a Volquartsen, they can be found at MidwayUSA), my extraction issues have gone away.
@@1977Yakko The extractor wasn’t the problem. I couldn’t even cycle the pump. I did figure it out though. The breach section of the barrel had a really bad machined finish. You can feel little grooves with a fine point. What would happen after firing off a shot, the brass part of the shell would expand into those groves, locking the shot in place, making it stuck or jammed, and not being able to cycle the round. So, I used a dremel and some rough grit sanding bands, like 120 or 60 grit (can’t remember), to smooth out remove those grooves from the breech. I then followed up with finer grit to smoothen the finish of the breech, then polished it out with some polishing compound. Hasn’t jammed since and Cycles smoothly. Found this information on the internet somewhere.
@@juanm_23 I've seen the vids recommending polishing the bore. A inexcusable fix for any firearm right out of the box, even a budget firearm like a Remington Express. So far I haven't had that issue but all I've fired out of mine is Federal slugs at a indoor range. Not sure if different shells will cause the all to often reported failure you've experienced but I'm glad you got yours working.
@@juanm_23 Thanks for the information. Many recommend buying a Remington locally so that one can examine it for quality control issues. They did not go into details regarding issues to look for. Thanks for the details. I learned to break down handguns in a local store and examine the barrel bore for poor rifling. I now know to look for poor finishing throughout the firearm. Needing to use coarse grit sanding bands is surprising. For normal feed ramp polishing on hand gun I may start with 600 grit sandpaper and may finish with a polishing compound. My Taurus TX22 22LR handgun needed polishing of the feed ramp and chamber to eliminate some feeding issues. That is the only firearm I have that required polishing. I polished my Taurus G3c ramp when new to prevent issues. My other firearms came with polished feed ramps.
I had to buy the "I bought a remington and turned in to a gunsmith starterkit" to get my 870 super mag to work(cases got stuck due to some rough "uneven grooves" on the opposit side of the extractor on the beginning of the chamber). This package included 1x non mim extractor (because th old one went to hell), 1x 12ga barrel cleaning set (to polish lightly inside the chamber), some fine (3000P) sandpaper(did not end up using this particulary much), drill, dremel kit and some fine metal polish. Now it works fine. For my R700 SPS DM i my magazine kept popping out and so did the parts inside the magazine (this has never been mistreated and has been like this since i bought the rifle.) So i took some measurementts of the magazine, threw it in the trash and built a 20rd using some crude tools( mostly, hammer, anvil and a weldingmachine) and some thin steelplates meant for chassis repair. Old Reminton guns are fantastic, the newer ones however... well not so much. (PS i would not recommend doing or fixing any of this yourself unless you are trained to do so, guns operate at high pressure and mistreating guns can cause serious injury)
I have an mossy 590a1 and an 870. I’ve put around 4-5 thousand rounds through the 870. Never had an issue. Never. Oh and btw the single extractor is replaceable. It does not need to go back to the factory. Even though I’ve never had an issue with one extractor. My 590 jams with low power Winchester garbage. The remy has never ever had an issue.
I’d put my 1964 870 Wingmaster up against any shotgun. Whether it be for hunting, clay, or any “tactical” shotgun for home defense. It is a shame what happened to Remington and how they went defunct. A combination of poor business decisions and parent companies that bought them out caving to the anti 2A nut jobs.
Bought a new express 2 years ago and ran about 20k rounds through it as my dedicated trap gun. Ran flawlessly the entire time and routinely score better than guys with $10k+ trap guns. Did I just get lucky with mine? btw, the stock is laminated, giving the appearance of "graining".
Same thing happened to me. I bought a Remington 870 20 gauge on 2011 for my wife for home defense. First thing I did was learn how to take it apart. Didn’t had the chance to take it to the range because I was in the military, and I was either training or deployed. I got out and finally was able to use it in 2015. While I had it, I kept cleaned, lubricated and had it in a protective sock to keep it from rusting. Took it to range and started with winchester bird shot. After about 20-25 rounds the shit stopped shooting and the rounds would get stuck inside the magazine chamber. Took it apart and there was nothing wrong. Put it back together after the first round same thing happened. I replaced the plastic garbage follower it had with a stainless aluminum follower thinking that was the problem. Took it to the range and shot 5 Remington slugs and 5 buck shots with no problems. Shot 3 winchester birdshot and the problem returned. Thanks to your video I’m try and fix it by polishing the mag chamber and see if it finally shots birdshot. The moral of my story is I will never buy another Remington shotgun and I will try and find a mossber 20g because my 12g semi takes all kinds of rounds without problems.
Strate Shooter, is not my tools or operator error. The round is not getting stuck in the chamber or not ejecting the round. The problem is after the first shot the the next cartridge gets stuck inside the mag tube and the spring will not push it into the loading chamber. I replaced the follower and it shots slugs and buckshots like nothing, but when it comes to bird shot it just won’t function properly. So if it’s my tools or operator error it would be doing the same thing with all types of rounds, won’t you think?
The problem is with Expresses made recently. I bought the Express last fall and have had nothing but feeding issues right out of the box. Every 2-3 rounds get hung up in the tube and I have to mess around with the stays with the action open just to get it to release the next shell. I spent $370 thinking it would be a fun introduction to the 12-gauge pump but you get what you pay for. My cousin has had the same issue, and Remington’s customer service is third rate.
That’s just my limited experience as that’s the only Remington I have. Do you think the issues extend to all other recently made Remingtons? One of my buddies works for ICE and he swears by his 870 but I believe his is a wingmaster. Range owner has shot with it to test it and he says I need to run another 1200 rounds through it (I’ve run 800 already).
@@jasonbennett5914 2000 rounds is $800 if 40 CPR. Spending that much on ammo to get a shotgun to run reliable is extreme. TFB TV runs 500 rounds to see if a shotgun becomes unreliable or breaks. Honest Outlaw channel does 1000 round reviews to make sure a firearm is reliable. I think one malfunction in the first 100 rounds may be considered acceptable by the host of that channel.
@@raykettel1837 thank you for your perspective! Since writing this, I’ve now gotten my fore-end stuck on the main and can’t get it to detach so I’m going to take it into a gun shop where they can probably figure it out lickety split. Note to self-spend the money and buy a higher quality gun so I did. Bought a Beretta 1301 tactical semi auto and love it but I need to replace my pump action with perhaps a Mossberg.
Really sad stuff. I've owed many Remington products through the years. I bought an 870 Express in 1987 ( first year the Express came out). This gun was awesome and continues to be awesome. It makes me both sad and mad that the quality at Remington has gone in the shitter. I still buy Remington stuff ( especially the Marlin lever actions they now make), but you pretty much have to inspect the fuck out of the gun before you buy it to make sure it's not garbage. I guess this is why Remington is about to go under.
Today. I just put 100 rnds thru my 1980s wingmaster. Not one problem. I've chopped the barrel and threaded a new bead, changed the furniture and she still functions as reliable as the day she was bought.
I bought my Remington 870 (Wingmaster) in 1969. I've put unknown hundreds of rounds through it without a single malfunction or problem. If what you've said here is true that's too bad.
In 2003 I bought a used 870 wingmaster from an pawn shop I look up the manufacturer dates and I believe it’s from the 60s Newer had a problems after all these years
Not sure if anyone has brought this up yet, but the extractor on the Remington 870 is user replaceable. I replaced the mim extractor in mine with a machined aftermarket version. It’s the ejector which is user replaceable on the Mossberg but welded to the receiver of the Remington... At lest bash the 870 on its own merits and detriments...
@@TerriblyTactical I shouldn't have to what? Replace my extractor out of the box? No, I shouldn't have to, and I wouldn't have to if I had bought one of the better Remingtons as opposed to the express model. All I'm saying is that the extractor is indeed user replaceable. Only the ejector is not.
I bought two 20 ga and one 12 ga 870 express between 2006 and 2009. All of them had issues with extraction of fired shells. Me and my son were shooting lots of sporting clays at the time. Also bought a Remington 1100 G3 in 20 ga. in 2006. It also had same problem. { A new barrel for the G3 solved it's problem. At a cost to me of $229.00. } In summer of 2017 I purchased a lefty 870 in 12 ga. Have not had a single issue with it so far. I have not put a lot of ammo through it yet, but I'm hopeful that Remington may have gotten their collective shit together, and are again building reliably functioning guns. { One of the 20 ga 870 guns was a combo that came with a rifled slug barrel. During the initial attempt to sight it in with some sabot slugs, I discovered the front sight was loose in it's dove tail. Not a complicated fix, but another example of a non existent quality control department.} A very sad decline in what used to be a top notch gun maker.
I bought a Remington 870 Express Mangum fairly recently here in the UK (Imported from US though), had absolutely no drama's with it so far. The extractor can be replaced really easily too, not that I've changed mine but i stripped the bolt down as soon as i got it. Did you ever consider what abuse the gun was subject to prior to ending up in a pawn shop? Second hand guns are always a blur as you have literally no idea what it was subjected to by the previous owner. If the gun did extract properly, what would your view on it have been?
My 1960's 870 wingmaster is still running strong,no issue. The bluing is gone on some area, stock and corncob fore arm are all scratched up and dented. My 10 year old 870 express magnum is reliable with high and low brass shells, bird shot, buck shot, rifled slugs.
thats why I know people who have bought the BRAND NEW 2020 870 express super magnums for $530 canadian and have 0 problems with it. The only problems I ever see people having is when they shoot cheap ammo or winchester ammo. Shoot some fucking remington if you're gonna buy a remington.
My first gun my dad got for me was a Remington 870 in 2013. The first 100-200 rounds were gritty as I remember, (mostly due to the unpolished finish inside the receiver) but after that I have had nothing but flawless performance.
A sign of the times. I love Remington, BUT!!!!!!! even as a Remington Fanboy, theres no arguing your points. Cheap materials, cheap machining, cheap ammunition and rushed, corner cutting manufacturing. Its all about meeting demand at the cost of quality and it shows. I've never had an issue with any of my Remington products, BUT i can absolutely see why you have and frankly, it honestly doesn't surprise me at all. The fan Boys and Girls (pick any company) need to work together and start holding these companies into account for their lackluster manufacturing practices instead of defending garbage products because "MuH Pappy had one" and start demanding better. Remington and many other companies have ridden their names to success for far too long, and being a household name isnt cutting it anymore. Also, Giggity!
Bought an 870 a year ago and two problems. Extraction issues and rust. Sold the piece of shit a few months later. Never again. I’ll stick with the Winchester super x field and the mossberg 500 all purpose field.
Just bought my first 870 Wingmaster. She's a December 1957 production that is in nearly new condition. Function is flawless, points like my finger, and is the slickest pump shotgun I've ever handled. I'm looking forward to years of game and memories with this one.
I’ve had my wingmaster 870 in 16 gauge since 1979 got when I was 16 ironically but it has never had malfunction once when I mean once I mean once I’ve killed hundreds of doves literally and dozens of crows and more rabbits than I can count my 870 has all metal parts the only thing plastic in it is the shells your 500 and new 870 have plastic trigger Guards maybe the new 870 is shit but my old 16 gauge is great
Aero авиационно-космический I would just like to ask your opinion on the synthetic polymer trigger guards, I was just wondering if they break easy or are they pretty durable?
The Freedom Group ruined Remington just like they did Bushmaster. I have a early 70s Wingmaster that I've dove hunted with for decades and it has never failed me.
I got the Tactical version a year and a half ago. Failure to extract was somewhat common (shell getting stuck in the ejection port, a "stove pipe" I think it's called). I replaced the cheap stamped (MIM) extractor with a machined one (Volquartsen) and it has function flawlessly since. I've heard others like yourself having shells get stuck. Polishing the bore is often a recommended fix (an inexcusable quality control issue IMO) but mine hasn't had that issue. I also swapped out the plastic follower with an aluminum one but that was just a personal preference to have it easier to see and feel if it's loaded. The factory stock was functional but I swapped out the furniture with Magpul which is much more ergonomically friendly IMO. So yeah, that holding company that owned Remington before they went under abused the name and cheaped out on quality but they're generally easy to fix. Mossberg is probably better right out of the box but if you made the mistake of getting a Remington based on their prior reputation and were unaware of their QA issues (like myself), the problems can be fixed. So yeah, I wish I had got a Mossberg 500/590 but I got my Remington working now so I may as well keep it at this point. I was considering trading it before I got my replacement extractor. Since then, I've been through two range sessions with 50 slugs each trip and have had no issues. Sorry to hear about the issues you had. You're not alone. It shouldn't be that way. I just went through the effort to fix it which I shouldn't of had to do but it's done now. Hopefully whatever you traded this for has works better for you. Take care.
@@TerriblyTactical Since my post, I have gotten a Mossberg 590A1. 18" model. 6+1 capacity. Bead sight though it is drilled and tapped should I want to add a rail. Replaced the factory furniture with Magpul as preference. The Mossberg has better quality control with things like the barrel as it's pretty smooth whereas the Remington is pretty rough when looking down the barrel during cleaning. The dual extractors is a great feature. Spent shells project from the ejection port on my Mossberg while they just sort of tumble out of the Remington. Loading is easier. I'm vision impaired in my right eye so I have to shoot left handed and the slide release and safety are much more left handed friendly than the Remington. Mossberg applies a better finish too so less likely to rust which the Remington Express is sadly prone to from what I've heard. That said, the trigger is lighter than on my Mossberg and the slide does function a tad more smoothly with the Remington. Sadly there was a issue out of the box as the mag tube spring was weak and I was having issues with the last shell not feeding, even when manually unloading it was a pain to get that last shell out. Mossberg sent me a replacement but it didn't really fix it. I got a replacement from Wolff Springs and it works flawlessly now. Odd that I've had an issue with both pump action shotguns I've bought as they're supposed to be simple and reliable. Pretty disheartening but thankfully the fix was easy and cheap. BTW, which Benelli did you get? Those tend to be high end and really pricey. If I could afford a M4....
@@1977Yakko I've always had great luck with every mossberg I own and same with the benellis. I've got an m2 for 3gun, an sbe3 for hunting, and an m4 h20 because it's freaking awesome lol!
I have a 870 Super Express Mag from like 10 yrs ago with the 28" bird, 20" rifled slug, and a 20" smooth bore barrel with an ATI mag extension making it a 9 shot gun, and have never really had any issues....except for with maybe the ATI extension spring ramrodding the shell back super hard. That being said, was this before Freedom Group, I think so. I am in the market for a Moss 590A1 9 shot. I agree that I think Moss is just better product..ie....dual extractors, safety location...etc. Do I get the 20" 590A1 9 shot or spend extra money for a 590A1 SBS 14" 6 shot and have to pay for the tax stamp? Good vid, buddy!! Thanks!
Derek Neumann Fuck federally registering shit, might as well just get a shockwave and put a stock on it Fuck em. Lol (That is very bad advice I am obviously joking) Go with an 18 inch barrel because there is no real benefit to the 14 inch justifying a tax stamp and having to oay for it
The "Express" is a entry level, mass produced shotgun, made to meet a price point. Looking at an ad from 1951 the standard 870ap cost 79.00 and deluxe 92.00, today that would be over $830.00 and $980.00 respectively. So, it seems, the 1950/2019 prices and general quality of a wingmaster have remained unchanged for almost 70 years. The "express" shotgun was never ment for the serious shotgun collector, it's simply a shotgun made for the average citizen. As a side note, Mossberg's sole existence was based on making the cheapest shotgun possible. So, in 1996, after 30 years of losing sales Remington offered the express to compete with the 500.
If you want a Remington 870 just buy a old one in my opinion a old 870 beats a new mossberg 500 anyday of the week. Also you can a old 870 that works well for 2 to 300 hundred.
Have a 2017 Express that looks just like the one in video - the machining inside of the receiver is ridiculously rough in the action bar slots and top of receiver - spent hours with dremel and sandpaper and the action is still a tad rough (not butter smooth). Rough action bar slots are cutting grooves in the bolt carrier plate. On the other hand I have a few early 2000's 870 Express guns that after a little polish work and shooting are really quite nice - my favorite shotgun is a cheap big-box-store bought-on-sale-with-rebate plastic stocked 2007 870 Super Magnum that has had trigger polished, polished action bars/action bar slots, chamber/bore polished (particular attention to the barrel tailpiece where the rim of the shell slides during ejection - those annular ridges jam shell during extraction) - action of this gun is unbelievably SLICK - it's starting to look a little beat but is truly a joy to shoot. So...with a little work most of the later 870 Express can be quite smooth and reliable - Remington's demise is sad but with a later production 870 Express (and maybe a little effort) you can get a cheap/tough/smooth/reliable pump gun that you won't worry about dropping in the mud or getting a little rusty (just steel wool it off). Here is another video ruclips.net/video/gc9eLGlboD4/видео.html showing how rough/unfinished barrel tailpiece issues destroyed the reputation of the 870 - so sad but easily fixed in a few minutes with a dremel and some fine sandpaper - here is a video showing problem/fix ruclips.net/video/mlGoxNsaieE/видео.html Really hoping that the new RemArms guns are a lot better..
😂😂😂😂😂 you have no proof that it is a piece of shit also If it actually jammed I’ve had A friend that had a Mossberg and it jammed every two shots while hunting
I have an old express 12 works good. Bought my son a new one . Total junk. Wouldn't eject shells. Sent it back to Remington. Took several months to get back. Still didn't work.
Terribly Tactical I will thumb your video up though. I was gonna get another 870 because I like my 80's wingmastsr so much but after watching this and hearing they don't make them like they once did I think I'll pass. My luck with guns is awful so I'm positive I would have got a screwy one. It sucks that these days alot of gun manufacturers cut as many corners as possible. I recently picked up a 10/22 just to burn ammo with and while it functions perfectly the receiver feels like a toy compared to my Dad's older version.
My 870 jammed with some of the cheap shells I put in it. I just put some 000 steel wool on a drill with some polish and polished the chamber. I never had any issues after that, it will work with cheap shells too now.
You said this is a used gun. That could be the problem right there. Who knows what happened to it with the previous owner. That's why it is often best to buy new guns.
It's really sad what Remington has become, I'd love an 870 if they weren't absolute dogshit nowadays. I have Winchester, Mossberg, and Stoeger pumps and autoloaders.
I have a Remington 870 from 1995. It has a metal trigger guard and functions great. I hate polymer trigger guards! Ever since a buddy 33 years ago broke the plastic trigger guard on his Stevens 22. The old 870’s from 1980’s and prior are a much better 870..
Mossbergs can jam up after being dropped due to the shell carrier dislocating which is a design issue. The Remington issue stems from reduced quality control and cost cutting in their manufacturing process. I personally like the Remington 870 but I agree a new pump shotgun should work with any ammunition.
You did not describe the exact problem. If you buy used without. warranty you may need to pay for a gunsmith service. It's a gamble. You don't continue fireing a gun thats broken. It will likely cause further damage, like you don' keep driving a broken car until it straighteneds it's self out. The rim job 380 has a fatal design flaw and nobody even knows it exists other than people that read the nra magazines and believe everything in them...these are also the type of people who think kimber makes a good 1911...my shotgun problem is solved I sold it to an amateur gun smith and bought two benellis
Terribly Tactical I can not test everything made so I read watch YTs and hope for the best.Magazines and the big YT channels rarely say anything bad about any gun since there bread and butter is selling advertisements.I have read complaints about Kimber,I. am happy with my Ruger Commander I picked up used.Any BENELI is 4 times the cost of a stock 870. I value opinions that are not corporate sponsored is why I'm here.
The price of an 870 in 1960 was 100$ Today it would be +$800 If you can get a $250 you have $550 for ceracoat, non-MIM extractor and ejector, polishing chamber and springs in trigger/lifter. And you'll have money for ammo left. Mossberg has a flaw in it's lifter mech. It can be dislocated if dropped. The trigger housing can break off if hit. That's why (edit-580to 590) 590a1 has a trigger housing in metal
Just bought a 879 police magnum and i think i like it. I have only put about 100 rounds through it, but it ran flawless. I ran 00 buck, slugs, and some 7 1/2 bird shot. Dont remember all the brands i used but no issues. Glad i made the purchase
Got one when I was 10 (about 30 years ago). Used to have issue with 3" magnum shells getting stuck. After shooting thousands of rounds as a kid it went away. My dads wingmaster from maybe the 60's or 70's has the same issue with 3" magnums. He didn't shoot as much as me. I wouldn't be afraid of finger banging the chamber with some sand paper. Agree that it should be like that from the factory. If people keep buying them they will keep selling them.
@@TerriblyTactical pretty sure remarms just started back up making 870s in april. Remington was split up into several pieces. Remarms is the new name for the section that will remake certain firearms.
I bought one back in 1998 & it functions just as good as the day I bought it, the finish is worn down, nothing serious though. I keep hearing about the bad quality control of the newer ones, two of my friends bought one too & they've had a host of problems with them, same issues you mentioned here.
I have stuck shell issues in my 590a1. I’m convinced stuck shell issues are shell problems. Not gun. All of my shotguns have extraction issues when I use cheap Winchester shells. Federal shells work fine with every shotgun I have. I have Remingtons, Moss bergs, Winchester’s, berettas, and Browning’s. 13 in total. Stop buying garbage ammo.
I can see that however I never buy junk ammo trust me and the times I have bought some bulk bs from Winchester it's worked flawlessly through my mossbergs and benellis so idk
Any 870 pre-2007 should be good to go. It's after 2007 when Remington became a subsidiary of Freedom Group did the 870 EXPRESS started dropping in quality big time. Stay away from the 870 Express. The 870 Police magnums are still good to go.

Watched this video and I'm still planning on getting a 870. This dude need some history bout this gun.
I think it's just cause he's using the Walmart ammo. He even said that the Federal worked fine.
James that could be true. I’ve had issues with bulk Winchester loads in the past. Their shells are really soft so they probably swell to the point they lodge in the chamber.
Just the fact that he said the federal worked... and then blamed it on the gun... it's astonishing.
James I wouldn’t be against blaming the gun if it was a Walmart knock off. Either way the Express isn’t the best gun ever but just because you have issues out the box on a 300 dollar gun doesn’t make it garbage.
Just don’t buy a new Express. I’ve run 800 rounds through mine of all kinds and nothing but misfeed problems right out of the box.
Shouldn't leave the factory if it ain't right
I have nine guns but the best shotgun i ever own is a new remington wingmaster. I bought it last year end i love it
Then you are one lucky guy
Konstantinos Dimitriou the wingmaster is on a better quality control then express line my opinion the 870 is still good as long as it’s the wingmaster, police, or marine magnum but other then that I agree with video the express line is crap.

The older ones yeah
Love my Remington 870 don’t know what garbage shells you are shooting but that’s you😂😂
I'm shooting factory Winchester shells...look it up it's actually a pretty common problem
Terribly Tactical the issue here is you’re depending completely on the internet
People are failing to realize it an April fools joke. It was uploaded on April 1st. I think it's a joke...

Mossberg is junk. Scheels don't even carry them because too many problems. Put 2 parts in an 870 and I'll put it up against anything. Volquartsen edge extractor and polish chamber. You got the best pump on the market. 25 dollar part.
I have a newer 870 and I’ve used it A LOT and I have never had a problem with it whatsoever.

Yea but there shouldn't be a problem my mossberg eats and spits out any and everything
Come on man, if your even remotely into guns you should know that all guns are finicky with ammo
I've been using Winchester in mine for a while now. Never had any issues.
Good info and thanks for watching!

I would have nothing against remington had I not had the experience that I did

The first 870 I bought it 6 years ago and I had to drive 3 hrs to get it becase the dont have them everywhere so i did some research on the internet and madr some phone calls and found it in a gun shop 3 hrs away from home.
The second one i found it in my home town by accident,I walked in a gun shop asking for a good air rifle for pest control but then saw the 870 on the shelve for sale and said to the guy forget about the air rifle im buying this gun.
I am beyong happy with my two 870 wingmasters and i will never get rid of them for any reason.

Yea couldnt agree more old remingtons only man

It does not need to go back to the factory. Even though I’ve never had an issue with one extractor. My 590 jams with low power Winchester garbage. The remy has never ever had an issue.
Really because I was told by remington to send it in

I’d put my 1964 870 Wingmaster up against any shotgun. Whether it be for hunting, clay, or any “tactical” shotgun for home defense. It is a shame what happened to Remington and how they went defunct. A combination of poor business decisions and parent companies that bought them out caving to the anti 2A nut jobs.
Indeed good sir....indeed
First off a new 870 is absolutely shit buy the older models
Bought a new express 2 years ago and ran about 20k rounds through it as my dedicated trap gun. Ran flawlessly the entire time and routinely score better than guys with $10k+ trap guns. Did I just get lucky with mine? btw, the stock is laminated, giving the appearance of "graining".
Maybe you did maybe you did not....maybe I have the exception to the rule. All I know is that my example would not run to save my life.
Yeah i definitely do not trust any new Remington stuff and it's a shame what they did to that company
"First thing I did was take it apart" . I see a problem here . " It is a poor craftsman who blames his tools "
Love my 870 don’t jam at all I mostly shoot federal but have shot about every kind you can think of for cheap ammo
That's what people keep telling me but from what I have experienced and seen from other people online I cant trust them
The problem is with Expresses made recently.
To say the least unfortunately
That’s just my limited experience as that’s the only Remington I have. Do you think the issues extend to all other recently made Remingtons? One of my buddies works for ICE and he swears by his 870 but I believe his is a wingmaster.
Range owner has shot with it to test it and he says I need to run another 1200 rounds through it (I’ve run 800 already).
@@jasonbennett5914 those are probably Wilson Combat border patrol specials
@@jasonbennett5914 2000 rounds is $800 if 40 CPR. Spending that much on ammo to get a shotgun to run reliable is extreme. TFB TV runs 500 rounds to see if a shotgun becomes unreliable or breaks.
Well good
I bought my Remington 870 (Wingmaster) in 1969. I've put unknown hundreds of rounds through it without a single malfunction or problem. If what you've said here is true that's too bad.
It really is from everything I've seen on multiple occasions and yea it really is unfortunately.

Newer had a problems after all these years
My grandfather has one from 1956, and it has worked without fault since it was made.
You shouldn't have to though
@@TerriblyTactical I shouldn't have to what? Replace my extractor out of the box? No, I shouldn't have to, and I wouldn't have to if I had bought one of the better Remingtons as opposed to the express model. All I'm saying is that the extractor is indeed user replaceable. Only the ejector is not.
Thank you sir. Find an older Wingmaster and be happy.
I bought two 20 ga and one 12 ga 870 express between 2006 and 2009. All of them had issues with extraction of fired shells. Me and my son were shooting lots of sporting clays at the time.
Karen here, it’s April fool joke,
wow🤦🏻♂️😑😒
I bought a Remington 870 Express Mangum fairly recently here in the UK (Imported from US though), had absolutely no drama's with it so far. The extractor can be replaced really easily too, not that I've changed mine but i stripped the bolt down as soon as i got it. Did you ever consider what abuse the gun was subject to prior to ending up in a pawn shop? Second hand guns are always a blur as you have literally no idea what it was subjected to by the previous owner. If the gun did extract properly, what would your view on it have been?
It was a gunshop and it was on consignment new unfired.
I will stick with my Remington 870 my mossberg 12 gauge sucked
To each their own
My 1960's 870 wingmaster is still running strong,no issue. The bluing is gone on some area, stock and corncob fore arm are all scratched up and dented. My 10 year old 870 express magnum is reliable with high and low brass shells, bird shot, buck shot, rifled slugs.
Yeah but those are older guns
thats why I know people who have bought the BRAND NEW 2020 870 express super magnums for $530 canadian and have 0 problems with it.
Glad it worked out for ya. I sold mine.
@@TerriblyTacticalcry us all a river 😢😢
Have a mossberg 500 that’s complete trash that my dad bought in the 80s. My wingmaster 16 ga shits on it. Also I’m a benelli man having 4 of them.
Lolol giggity indeed! Spot on comment, thanks for watching!
Bought an 870 a year ago and two problems. Extraction issues and rust. Sold the piece of shit a few months later. Never again. I’ll stick with the Winchester super x field and the mossberg 500 all purpose field.
Yea that seems to be very common amongst the 870s of modern day and it really is a shame
Just bought my first 870 Wingmaster. She's a December 1957 production that is in nearly new condition. Function is flawless, points like my finger, and is the slickest pump shotgun I've ever handled.
I'm looking forward to years of game and memories with this one.
The old ones are the best ones! Good find and happy hunting!
That's why you change out the mim extractor to non mim exctator, sear spring
You shouldnt have to change shit
The Freedom Group ruined Remington just like they did Bushmaster. I have a early 70s Wingmaster that I've dove hunted with for decades and it has never failed me.
Couldn't agree more
Also agree 100%
Take care.
I just sold it and bought benellis and more mossberg pumps lol
Appreciate the information and taking the time to watch and leave a thoughtful and well laid out comment though!
Thanks!
I would get 590 9 shot honestly for the money and not having it federally registered I think its ur best bet
Derek Neumann Fuck federally registering shit, might as well just get a shockwave and put a stock on it
Fuck em. Lol (That is very bad advice I am obviously joking)
Go with an 18 inch barrel because there is no real benefit to the 14 inch justifying a tax stamp and having to oay for it
The "Express" is a entry level, mass produced shotgun, made to meet a price point.
It should still work
Besides, I know a competition trap shooter who has well over a million rounds through that 870
If you want a Remington 870 just buy a old one in my opinion a old 870 beats a new mossberg 500 anyday of the week. Also you can a old 870 that works well for 2 to 300 hundred.
*TRIGGERED*
Lololol
Here is another video ruclips.net/video/gc9eLGlboD4/видео.html showing how rough/unfinished barrel tailpiece issues destroyed the reputation of the 870 - so sad but easily fixed in a few minutes with a dremel and some fine sandpaper - here is a video showing problem/fix ruclips.net/video/mlGoxNsaieE/видео.html
Really hoping that the new RemArms guns are a lot better..
Indeed
😂😂😂😂😂 you have no proof that it is a piece of shit also If it actually jammed I’ve had A friend that had a Mossberg and it jammed every two shots while hunting
#butthurt
drop the mossberg 500 to the ground and it locks up because of the bolts
I have an old express 12 works good. Bought my son a new one . Total junk. Wouldn't eject shells. Sent it back to Remington. Took several months to get back. Still didn't work.
Same experience I had
Support you on patreon!!?? LOL!!!!?
Lololololol
Yea I've seen a bunch of vids with dudes doing that but the fact of the matter is that you shouldnt have to ya know
1911is just like a ford ... just saying
How do you tell if you got an old 870 or a new one kinda worried now always had old ones you could beat a bitch with and it still worked fine
Yea ig truly is a shame indeed brother
I have a Remington 870 from 1995. It has a metal trigger guard and functions great. I hate polymer trigger guards! Ever since a buddy 33 years ago broke the plastic trigger guard on his Stevens 22. The old 870’s from 1980’s and prior are a much better 870..
I love my mossy!
You and me both
eat it@@TerriblyTactical
Mossbergs can jam up after being dropped due to the shell carrier dislocating which is a design issue.
The Remington issue stems from reduced quality control and cost cutting in their manufacturing process.
I personally like the Remington 870 but I agree a new pump shotgun should work with any ammunition.
Thank you for being reasonable hahah
You did not describe the exact problem. If you buy used without. warranty you may need to pay for a gunsmith service. It's a gamble.
You don't continue fireing a gun thats broken. It will likely cause further damage, like you don' keep driving a broken car until it straighteneds it's self out.
If you can not buy a new 500 or 870 you need to get your money making skills together.A firearm related hobby is a very expensive hobby.
I took my new 870 out of the box yesterday and rapidly fired over 25. rounds without a hickup. The indoor range I shoot at rents newer model 870's.Take your 870 to a gunsmith or trade it as is.Buying a used gun is like buying a used car,no-one is lucky 100% of the time.
You good sir....are a pretentious douchebag who clearly knows nothing...everyone in this comment section is now dumber having read your comment and will never get back the precious moments it took to do so...ever...
Terribly Tactical RM .380 is getting good reveiws now.Maybe Remington had a bad year or two.
I am not the one with a broke gun.
I put another 25 rounds thru my 870 a few hours ago.My 870 is just a paper hole puncher to me.I am not a champion clay shooter, hunter or involved in law enforcement.I have never had to use a gun for self defense in my 55 years on earth.
I value opinions that are not corporate sponsored is why I'm here.
The price of an 870 in 1960 was 100$
Today it would be +$800
If you can get a $250 you have $550 for ceracoat, non-MIM extractor and ejector, polishing chamber and springs in trigger/lifter. And you'll have money for ammo left.
Mossberg has a flaw in it's lifter mech. It can be dislocated if dropped. The trigger housing can break off if hit. That's why (edit-580to 590) 590a1 has a trigger housing in metal
Stop defending a sub par gun man
@@TerriblyTactical I'm lifting up the gun the 870 can be, if one is prepared to accept that quality costs
Well Remington went of out business sooo....hahah
@@TerriblyTactical pretty sure remarms just started back up making 870s in april. Remington was split up into several pieces. Remarms is the new name for the section that will remake certain firearms.
@@askikr79 Remington died in the 80s. They will never again make wingmasters or police magnums like they used to.
In the 60's or 70's they didn't come in 3" magnums back then
I bought one back in 1998 & it functions just as good as the day I bought it, the finish is worn down, nothing serious though. I keep hearing about the bad quality control of the newer ones, two of my friends bought one too & they've had a host of problems with them, same issues you mentioned here.
Yea it really is a shame that such a great American company has went to shit...
I can see that however I never buy junk ammo trust me and the times I have bought some bulk bs from Winchester it's worked flawlessly through my mossbergs and benellis so idk
i bought a 1978 wingmaster yesterday. it has only fired 20 shots from new. good guns
Yeah, the old ones are great for sure
Any 870 pre-2007 should be good to go. It's after 2007 when Remington became a subsidiary of Freedom Group did the 870 EXPRESS started dropping in quality big time.
Stay away from the 870 Express. The 870 Police magnums are still good to go.
