I agree - scrolling on trackballs that are operated with index/middle/ring fingers needs better implementation. Scrolling with the thumb wheel can be very awkward, and although almost all trackballs can use the "Auto Scrolling" (hold middle click + move the ball), the precision of a dedicated hardware interface (like a scroll ring) can't be emulated through software.
Both are bad for your hand. Thumb should be the highest finger when using a mouse, that's a neutral position. A handshake position means your wrist isn't under constant torsion. None of these mouses get it right. The ProtoArc EM05 gets close, but needs to be an index trackball instead of thumb.
more trackballs need to have scroll rings around the ball.
