You can turn video into images with VLC.
This is good for making gifs.
Open your video.
Go tools and preferences.
Now show settings to all.
Go to video.
Filters.
Find and select scene filter
You can leave image format to be png.
Your images will be saved in the pictures folder.
If you want to change that add path here.
Recording ratio means that if you put value 5 every fifth image will be saved.
Put one if you want to export every second.
Click save.
Now enable this by going filters and tick this scene video filter.
Now if you play video you will see that it exports images.
Make sure to turn off this by going filters again and untick the scene filter.
Thi is important because if you forget it every video will produce images until you run out of hard drive.
And this is it.
This is how you Convert video to images with VLC.

The potential of vlc are all to be discovered. Great video. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Didn't save shit
Great video. This helped me get far enough along to get the job done. A few notes from my experience:
1. After settings you may need to rewind the video to the beginning. It only seems to output pictures from where you start to play.
2. Make sure that VLC is not set up to repeat playback of the video
3. I did not see any pictures until I closed VLC media player. In fact, none of my settings took hold until I restarted VLC (maybe a bug in my version?)
4. Once I closed and re-opened VLC media player, the png output worked fine- didn't have to repeat closing and opening.
You may see different behavior based on your version of VLC and/or which OS platform you are on.
Thanks for sharing the tips. Much appreciated!
Thanks, also I set it to 1 but it's not saving every second, it saves more than that but it's also not every frame
@@EZTutorialsOnline Hi i did everything as per your instruction in this video on my mac yet there are no images in the folder... not sure why that would be? Any suggestions ?
Thank you thank you! I was wondering why my setup wouldn't work.
Thank you this saved me.
Thank you Thank you So much. For me it did it when I restarted the VLC. Great video. Very helpful.
You're welcome!
Hm... this didn't work for me. I'm using a Mac. No images are created.
Oh, I don't have mac. Hope you manage to fix it.
@andreasmb Yes I have the same results with my Mac, do you find a solution? 😅
The only thing I could think of this being useful for is training an ai
bro this shi works ty
Thanks
didnt work for me at all for some reason.
you need to close and reopen vlc
@@mosesamusavi9330it works, thanks a lott dude
If only one file shows up on the output folder, you have to do this: right after clicking on preferences, select video on the top menu and you must check the box for sequential numbering (middle right). If you don't do this, the first file is overwritten again and again (you'll notice the swap file appears everytime a file is overwritten)
Thanks for sharing
yes sir i can understand you insturctions thank you so much meharajan India
i tried doing this and it didn't work, my files still get overwritten and i have only one picture :p
If it doesn't work for you the fix is that you need to put an output path.
on 0:31 just put the location of a folder
example:
c:\downloads\New
Also check your pictures default folder as if you dont put anything they auto save in there.
Thank you for the tip!
ofc it's a ghetto af way of doing things, it's vlc! what was i expecting...honestly.
This will be help to explain any movies 🤗🤗🤗
Thanks!

I followed the instruction to a Tee, but I was never able to extract individual frames. I have no idea why it does not work.
Same issue at the moment. I am looking into it. So, what seems to do the trick for me is to open vlc, setting everything up and then open the video in vlc and run it. Then it starts exporting the pictures. If I open the video set everything up and run it, nothing happens.
Hope it helps.
Thanks for the vid. First it didnt work but then I did what "Jim H" said in the comments here and then it did. Except for one thing. Here is my question/problem: Everytime I turn on the "scene video filter" the frame rate drops. Not just the pictures I'm getting out of it have a lower fps, but when I am watching the vid it also has lower fps. Do you know how to fix this?
Thank you - that was extremely helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey,
Thanks for the hack, it saves a lot of time.
After setting I restarted the player and then it worked.
Glad to hear that
Спасибо большое

Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!
Also restarting comment was helpful
Glad it helped!
really very usefull video immediately i can make a demo for my work, results are good, thank you so much A.meharajan India
You are most welcome
Thank you for this! I was trying to export a video into one frame for every second, and was really worried I had to do it manually every second for 1 hour 49 minutes! I just set the recording ratio to the frame rate of the video, restarted VLC (per @Jim H's tip) and let the movie play!
Note: I accidentally set the recording ratio to 1 initially and it generated 700 images in just a few seconds! That might have killed my hard drive if I had let it play.
Thnx for the tip!
Doesn't work. No pictures. Next time show something that actualy works
Really thanks so much! The more I see videos like this the more I think that VLC is the photoshop of video editing... It has so much utility
You're very welcome!
i can't get it to work
Thanks. How to make it take a screenshot for every new video slide? Instead of time based?
This has to be the best tutorial i've ever seen
:D Thanks!
BTW: Rather than end video with "This is it...", (... because it never really is)
better to end with "OK, Now I got you 90% of the way, so all you
whining babies can now figure out the rest of the problems by yourselves!"
EZ Tutorials is too kind to spend so much time responding questions here. Back in the day, especially in the Linux world, this would not be tolerated.
People need to realize that just because someone gives you some advice, it doesn't mean that now they are responsible for your entire freaking life!
Hahaha, you are absolutely right. This made my day! Cheers!
What kind of bullshit logic is this? People click on those videos because they have pressing issues to solve. I'm not a software engineer and couldn't possibly give a flying fuck about whatever happened in the Linux era. I'm not trying to prove to myself that I can figure out everything on my own, all I know is that I've had a tough week, once again I'm spending my supposedly free Saturday working on a project that I absolutely must hand in by the time I leave on a business trip in a week. Oh, also: dinner to make and apartment to clean.
I just happen to be in need of extracting frames from a video and if you think I'm going to be wasting precious hours on re-inventing the wheel, then think again.
How to extract all frames from a video file with FFmpeg:
ffmpeg -i NAMEOFYOURVIDEOFILE.mp4 frame_%04d.png
My .png files are going to the folder but they are all upside down. I do not have rotate enabled. It is something I cannot figure out. Any Ideas?
Thanks for the tutorial. I have the problem, that VLC doesn't run smoothly with this activated. I hear the sound fine, but the movie doesn't move - it just shows a still picture and VLC also just imports this one picture over and over. Any way to fix this or is that just my PC being to weak?
how to take images every 30 minute...what the value of ratio?
Nice very good information 🙏❤️
thanks!
Thank you so much!!!!!!!!! Big hug from Brazil

it didn't work for me
that's to bad. did you do everything like in video?
You need to run VLC as administrator after making the changes noted in the video. I had the same issue and fixed it this way. Start->VLC (right click) -> run as administrator
