There has never been, can never be a rendition of that anthem that will compare with THIS, the very first time it reached her ears as Queen anointed in full regalia in her coronation church, a royal peculiar. She was only 26. The back story of the BBC broadcast is fascinating. And this is the only play of the fanfare after this fashion as its opening was alerted to the more familiar rendering of today.
That's very observant of you to notice the difference between the fanfare as it was played then and now. Do we know why and when it was changed and what the exact differences are? I assume the arranger, Gordon Jacob, made the revision: he died as late as 1984. The main change I can hear immediately is on the 3rd chord which in the modern version is a straight root position major chord of B major but in the coronation version is a more interesting dominant 7th. I wonder why that was changed? It sounds good to me. It's a rather similar situation to the changes William Walton later made to his "Crown Imperial" march (1937 coronation) which included cutting out some rather good bars (I like them, anyway) towards the end.
Great Britain and its people have a lot to be very proud of. Anyone who vilifies GB is obviously suffering from a severe case of "Tall Poppy Syndrome" as it's called here in Australia.

When done right, this is the best anthem on earth. Personally I think they sing it too fast most of the time, but versions like this- slow and with lots of chord changes, going back and forth between major and minor- are chilling

I just want to say, you wouldn't say these words were you born in the Victorian Era when Hong Kong was first conquered. Discriminations, Corruptions, and Poverty were common things back then. I just hope you can think about that before saying these words. Of course, as a fellow Hong Konger, I do prefer British rule as it allows us to exists as an international centre for all sorts of cultures. We are able to see through different perspectives in our unique culture with the perfect mix of English & Chinese. It brings me great sorrow to see our unique culture ebbing away as time goes by, and each changes the mainland made here. But I digress, I just want to tell you there's more behind the definition of "better under British rule", things like this were never simple or black and white. 😉
