    Installed the Helix sub last weekend in my 2017 VW Golf Sportwagen S 4motion. Sounds much better than the factory system with the default vehicle code on the DSP.! Waiting to get the dongle to update the DSP with the vehicle=specific code (code number is 62 according to Gudrun Fischer). The two install videos were VERY helpful and made the installation easy. PULLED THE FUSE before transferring and connecting the red and brown wires to the connecting plug. THANKS KEVIN! Absolutely no problems with this part.
    BTW, you CAN install the soundbox sub on top of the spare tire, at least in a Golf Sportwagen that has a space saving spare tire.
    I was able to put the sub on top of the space saving spare tire and still have plenty of clearance for the trunk cover. I bought an extra long spare tire mounting bolt (as suggested on the VW vortex forum) plus a second regular mounting bolt to get the second nut (the longer bolt does not come with the needed second nut) to secure the spare tire on the bottom of the trunk. The order, from bottom to top is: space saving spare tire, then the first mounting bolt to secure the tire followed by the sub on top of the spare, then the mounting collar inside the top of the sub and finally the second plastic nut to secure the sub. Makes for a clean-looking and secure spare tire/soundbox install. Very pleased with how the entire project worked out! Thanks again, Kevin plus everyone who contributes on the VW forums for all your help.

    Just finished my Helix install like 30 minutes ago, if anyone is debating this upgrade, DO IT! I followed this video and Part 2 to the dot (pulled the fuse of course, no zaps 😂), and I couldn't be happier with the results. Took me about 2.5 hours from start to finish, it's such a clean install and I still have my spare tire (with the longer spare bolt) and full hatch capacity.
    Through the various threads I've seen some complaints about lack of low bass frequency, audio cutting out, distortion, etc etc. I have NONE of these issues so far. It sounds perfect across all my music genres, and if anything I have to turn the bass level down on my EQ, it hits pretty damn hard! And yes, I agree, it sounds better than the Fender "premium" sound system, far better. I think the few complainers either didn't program the system correctly with the dongle, or messed up wires without realizing it. Just take your time, do it methodically and neatly, CODE the system when your done, and enjoy the beautiful results!
    Thanks Kevin for the videos!! Made the process so smooth 🙏

    In the process of installing this in my 2018 GTI SE, I noticed that it was prewired, head unit to trunk, and so I did NOT have to use the included cable. Hopefully this will save some folks some time on later models.

      Really? So you didn't have to do anything except mount the amp to the box and plug it in? ..and the harness was connected to the back of the glove comparment head unit? Where did the hatch side of the harness terminate? (IOW, where should I look in my GTI to see whether it's pre-wired or not)?

    I did this install a few months ago. it was pain in the *ss. I bent some of the metal clips that holds the plastic trim, damaged the led wire, then somehow made a short circuit and blew a fuse... broke the plastic connector when re-attaching the wires. Lots of swearing.. But i fixed everything and its all good now and it sounds amazing! only downside is that you loose spare tire.

    • @Kevin_MK7RSR
      @Kevin_MK7RSR  8 лет назад

      +sharky322 Totally agree. Lots of blood, sweat, tears, beer and swearing. :) Took me about 8-10 hours total just to do the trim and harness running front to back (Along with filming it). I did the same thing with the wires. I took out one at a time at the radio part (Red and black (or brown?)) but didnt realize the yellow and black in the loom loop were touching. ZAP! :..(
      Same here. Night and day better sound than stock. Bass has quite a KICK too for two small 6" speakers!

    looking forward to part 2! is dongle/flashing needed for 2016 Golf Sportwagen (non-Fender)?

    • @Kevin_MK7RSR
      @Kevin_MK7RSR  8 лет назад +1

      +Nick Johnson Thanks, should be done with it soon. I believe it is, there is a guy on vwvortex forums with a sport wagon who installed one and flashed his using a dongle he ordered, said there was in-fact a difference in sound. I haven't flashed mine yet, but I'm not sure it's necessary. I might try anyway, but right now it sounds phenomenal. The base stereo was great to begin with, this makes it sound like a stereo system on a whole new level. Very surprising. The only thing I would like that this doesn't seem to have is more control over the crossover for the in-cabin speakers. I would like to bring a little more mid-range and even bass back into them.
      *EDIT : After programming with Dongle, sound is better! Mids are back in the cabin and the sound stage has a much better placement. A tip from another VW Vortex'er : Even if your sub comes pre-programmed to the right number (Mine was 51 I think) set it to your number and hit program anyway. I did just that and it made a small yet noticeable difference in the overall sound quality. 👍🏻

      I have the 6" display, OEM Head unit that came in the 2016. Is your Head Unit aftermarket? I'm guessing it would work because you're tying the connections to/from the sub into the Media Unit in the glove box, not the HU itself, but I can't say for sure...

      +Dirk Beer Thanks! Nothing broken. I did Short a fuse in the install of the wire and ended up welding them together though. Yikes! I just had to replace a 20 fuse, thank god. There's really on;y one place it can go through if I remember correctly. A hole in the back of the media unit space, then behind the glove box to the right and into a channel along the passenger side kick panel then into the rocker panel cover. You'll figure it out 👍🏻

    First of all - thanks for this tutorial, greate video.
    I've faced with problem:
    Unfortunately the Discover Pro MIB 2 does not seem to wake the DSP in the Helix in my Golf.
    To solve it I have to disconnect and reconnect the DSP every time the radio restarts.
    Situation is very dissapointing.
    Does anyone solve this problem??

    • @Kevin_MK7RSR
      @Kevin_MK7RSR  5 лет назад

      Artem Krivoi : That sucks, sorry to hear that. I would check with Audiotec Fischer / helix, you might have a faulty amp. They may be able to replace JUST the amp so you don't have to remove the wiring. Who did you buy it from? If it was a dealer, Maybe they can open another box, try the new amp and just swap them for you if that one works.

      Amazon or eBay, either are fine, but if you can get high quality ones then pay a bit extra. The cheaper ones tend to get stuck.

      The part number for the correct VW radio removal tools is 1C0-051-530. You should be able to order them through eBay. They're shaped differently from the cheap Chinese knockoffs you usually see, and are less likely to get stuck.

      I couldn't say, I've never installed an audio upgrade on a MK6 so I don't know what the terminal block and harness are like, but my assumption is "Yes". There are differences. If you're willing to learn a bit about audio, rewiring it wouldn't be too hard though.

    Hi Kevin, which version of Helix Sound Sytem did you installed? 000 051 419 or 000 051 419B???
    As I compared both installation manuals - the amplifier is different only. Version 000 051 419 has amp AMP051419B and version 000 051 419B has amp AMP051419C.
    Another things like wiring harness, socket connectors and adapters look exactly the same in both types.
    I want to install Helix P&P Sound System in my 2013 Golf 7 but I have a problem - my VW dealer says "no compability with your car, version 000051419 is for Golf 6 models only, while 000051419B is for Golf 7 Model Year 2016 (MIB II).
    I don't understand my dealer (others dealers say the same, based on ETKA verification) opinion and what may be different in MIB2 caused incompatibility with MIB1 - what do you think about it?

    • @brianstasney3825
      @brianstasney3825 8 лет назад

      The general consensus is the "B" part is Europe only. Installed the "non-B" part in my 2016 Golf R and it's working great.

    • @jacko5387
      @jacko5387 8 лет назад

      ... not exactly.
      I have answer for AUDIOTEC FISCHER GmbH - supplier of P&P Sound System for VW.
      Brief summary:
      VW has changed the Radio system in 2015 (Model Year) and after that MIBII units are installed - this is the main reason of new revision Plug & Play Sound Systems.
      The System 000-051-419 is the “old” one. This System is not compatible in Cars after Building Date May 2016.
      The System 000-051-419B is new one, which is compatible to every VW Car.
      The system with Ending “A” or “C” is the Trunk-Woofer Version. “A”- old and “C” from May 2016.
      The ETKA system (VAG Parts System) has wrong data about system 000-051-419, there is information, that it fit to Golf 6 only, not for Golf 7 models. On the other hand the 000-051-419B is fit to Golf 7 after Building Date May 2016 only. I reported this wrong information to VW.
      In reality (based on official VW instructions) amplifier was updated only, other things like wiring harness, socket connectors and adapters look exactly the same in both types.
      000 051 419B is AMP051419C
      000 051 419 is AMP051419B
      In my case - Golf 7 from 2013 - AUDIOTEC FISCHER GmbH wrote "You can use both offered Systems in your car." I am planning install the "B" system in the second half of September.

    • @Kevin_MK7RSR
      @Kevin_MK7RSR  7 лет назад

      Hey dude, sorry i didn't see this until now. Thanks for the added info. I'll have to check my model # for you. Did you ever get this sorted out?
      My R is a 2016 I took delivery of in March of 2016. So It seems it was manufactured before May. I had similar concerns thinking maybe the Non-B version was for radios pre-MIBII (Mine is MIBII) and that I would need the B version, but it works.
      Also you say you contacted AUDIOTEC FISCHER GmbH, but these are from Helix, is there a relation?
      Let me know if you got one, and if so which one, I'm interested to know which worked for you, thanks!

    Hey i bought the sound system for my Polo 6C 2015, i had Volkswagen install it, but they said that they did not need to code it, because the manual said it only needs coding if the the wheel was on the right side of the car ( like in england ) is this true?
    i hear stuttering, no clear sound, like scratching when i turn the volume up a little more than half... i feel like the work is not done..

    • @Kevin_MK7RSR
      @Kevin_MK7RSR  8 лет назад

      +André Lyon Love the Polo, saw some of those on a trip to Bermuda. Kinda' not happy we don't get them here. I think VW should release a Polo WRC Edition World Wide. :) Anyway, I vaguely remember my manual mentioning something about right vs. left hand drive as well, but I don't remember if it was coding related. I'll have to take a look and get back to you. Do you have you part #? There is a "B" version that people outside the states get that is slightly different, but know one knows exactly how or what the difference is.
      I hate to say it, but it sounds like they screwed something up in the wiring. I have zero clipping/distortion/crackling/etc. during volume change, and I still haven't coded mine. I seem to remember someone else on the VWVortex.com forums mentioning a crackling sound issue as well, not sure if he resolved his issue but you may want to start there. I was working with an Aussie and he had the Golf R estate Right-hand drive. Said he had to get it coded and it was set to a different code originally. He also had no sound distortion. From what I understand they all come coded for a GTI originally (4 door maybe?). After I ran the cable (Which is the hardest job) I called VW to get a quote on doing the wiring for me because I was scared to fry my system (Almost did) but they wanted $600 just for the final wiring even though I told the guy it was a 20 minute job if you knew what you were doing. He didn't budge on the price so I told him to screw. So as you can see from my Pt. 2 video I did it myself.
      But ya, I would go back to VW and demand they get it working with zero crackling. That's unacceptable.

      Here to say the Helix sub DOES fit perfectly with a donut spare! Order the longer spare bolt, tire on the bottom, feed the harness through one of the spokes, and the sub squeezes in perfectly. The cover fits right on top as well, no fitment issues!! Some guys have said it even sounds best when mounted on top of the spare 👌

    I'm under assumption after some mild research, that, US residents will have to order this Helix from Europe? (the VW places I've called say there is no Helix part option for a 2015, 2016 or 2017 Golf R per their databases. I've also given them the B number and they say see the nonB number which won't work in the newer mfg dates)

      Dealers don't know $hit about this. I called a bunch and they didn't even know it existed (But they could find it in their system). Never heard of it. When I picked it up from parts (After they special ordered it) the part s guy literally said "I didn't even know we sold this thing. They were nice about it, and the girl who ordered it was really helpful, but ya, they had no idea. One Service manager quoted me $600 to install it!
      What make and model do you have? (Golf R I'm assuming) What year? I take it your in the US/Canada?
      It's weird they can't find it. Do a google search, and Search VWVortex. There is a dealer who was selling it for around $530 and advertising in the forums. From there you can find the link to his site, take a screenshot from your phone and show the dealer.
      Also have them check for other models besides the R. Being that specific might be ruling it out. And, ya, I would avoid the B number... might be different enough to NOT work for ROW cars.

      Kevin Hannon -Mine is a 2016 Golf R (I'm I the US), just got it, looking to find/install, and just started researching... yeah I see peeps on VWVortex chatting about it too but wondering what the real answers are... some vibes out there saying it doesn't fit due to the R rear differential and such....Others in this thread have mentioned only the 'B' part number is backward compatible since 2016/recent. I'm searching for an option to buy presently but don't want to get a wrong part (obviously)...I've called 4 dealerships and they all say they can't even buy the part number (with the B and they all say there's a note in the system for the non B part) do you have a PayPal address or equivalent? I'd love to send you a few bucks for putting this vid together, since it will save me a few bucks when I install once I find out if I need the B part or not.

      Also...yours is a non B? earlier in the comments here, someone mentions something about the newer B being backwards compatible but the 'non B' being too old for 2016 and 2017 models....anyone else want to chime in on this (along with author)?

      Mr. Cardboard It fits the R even with the Rear dif. Take a look at my vid. I'm taking the measurement while it's in the trunk in the spare tire location. Also I put the trunk hatch down over it in the vid, no issues. No need to send $ but thanks :)

      The programming settings modify the sound frequency level and timing
      (delay) to each of the speakers for correct frequency response and stereo imaging. For optimum sound quality, the Digital Signal Processor (amplifier) in the Helix kit should be programmed with the programming dongle (VW part number 051419A) to the correct setting.
      There are three correct programming settings for USA/Canada Golf Mark 7's:
      56 = 2-Door Golf/GTI/R
      57 = 4-Door Golf/GTI/R
      60 = SportWagen (a.k.a. Variant or Estate)
      The general consensus from multiple threads is to not assume that your DSP is correctly set for your car. Several people have found that programming has noticeably improved sound quality.

      Pretty easy really, just do it all in reverse 😄. If you need room for a spare for long trips you can just take the sub out, leave the wire, and get a loop harness that plugs into the end in the trunk that basically puts it back to stock by routing the wiring the stock way (it’s all just one big loop).

      Not difficult at all! It goes back together a lot more easily than it comes apart. Just have to line it up and give it a firm push with your fingers, or "BONK" with the heel of your fist. Everything still looks new when you put it back together 👍🏻 (I had that concern too).

      Do you know anyone with one of these? You could try borrowing theirs to see if it works to rule out your amp being broken. Did you buy it used? Also, you can make (or buy) a loop harness to cut out the amp for when you need to put a spare in and want the Helix donut out, but still want your radio. This would either point to the amp being the issue (If the radio still worked), or the wiring being the issue if that also didn't work. This loop harness would also alow you to still use your radio while waiting for a new amp if that's the problem so you don't have to rewire it at the terminal block.

      @Kevin_MK7RSR  3 месяца назад

      @@julian117891 Glad you made some progress 👍🏻 If it's working now with the wire loop that should rule OUT the wiring harness. Points to the amp being the issue. I doubt it's the coding, they work out of the box, the sound just isn't optimized for your car until coded. Sounds like the amp may be bad. The dealer should reach out to Helix. One other thing, check that the pins in the amp harness receptacle aren't bent. FWIW I blew one amp when I installed aftermarket speakers in front. It has to be run with the OEM speakers. Probably something to do with the Ohms rating, or maybe the in-line highpass filter for the tweeters.

I noticed not too many people have the mk7 after the refresh, so hearing from some of those folks may confirm.
