Brazil's rollercoaster explained:
0:05 - the country is under military rule. The authoritarian government focuses solely on growth and investment, while social spending is low. There's deep inequality, but the middle class is thriving. Optimism prevails.
0:48 - the oil crisis causes a hiccup.
0:59 - the country plunges into a debt crisis. The government is unable to balance the budget, and, at the same time, there are massive protests demanding democracy and more social spending. Hyperinflation ensues. The lost decade begins.
1:31 - the country transitions to democracy. A new constitution mandates more social spending, while the incoming President pledges to open up the economy. Optimism prevails.
1:48 - the President is impeached on corruption charges. The government is unable to control spending. Hyperinflation ensues.
2:00 - Brazil finally defeats inflation, adopts a new currency. Optimism prevails.
2:22 - after the President wins a reelection bid, the currency is devalued. The country didn't really become poorer overnight, but the devaluation caused a sharp drop of the GDP in dollar terms.
2:44 - a new leftist President promotes a major increase in social spending. At the same time, he surprises investors by adopting business-friendly policies. Optimism prevails.
3:43 - the President is arrested on multiple counts of corruption and money laundering. His handpicked successor is impeached, after she adopted disastrous policies, while being unable to control spending. The country faces its worst economic performance in history.
ONGOING - the newly-elected President pledges to adopt business-friendly policies and control spending. Optimism prevails...

Sempre resistimos e continuaremos resistindo. In this video we can see how the 3 main Brazilian social internal crisis had a huge impact in the growth of the country as well as how 3 external and 1 national financial crisis also had some impact, see bellow
1- 1:04 in 1983-1984 (internal social crisis, huge impact), people went to the streets to demand the end of military dictatorship.
2- 1:48 in 1992 (internal social crisis, huge impact), people went to the streets to demand the president impeachment, which happened that year.
3- 2:22 in 1998-1999 (external financial crisis, huge impact), the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the 1998 Russian financial crises affected Brazil a lot, the result was the end of the Brazilian currency pegged to the U.S. dollar and a devaluation of 35% of the Brazilian currency known at the time as the "Samba Effect".
4- 2:33 in 2001-2002 (internal financial crisis, moderate impact), the Brazilian market feared that the leftist/Marxist president candidate Lula could win the election.
5- 3:13 in 2008 (external financial crisis, low impact), American subprime mortgage crisis affected Brazil for a short time.
6- 3:28 in 2011-2012 (external financial crisis, low impact), American Black Monday 2011 stock market fall and the resulting global financial crisis affect Brazil for a short time.
7- 3:42 in 2014-2016 (internal social crisis, huge impact), people went to the streets to demand the president impeachment, the demonstrations started in 2013, the official process started in 2015 and the impeachment was successful in 2016.

After 2 years you will see Brazil in last in world ranking. Then after a year, Brazil tops the ranking. This much Brazil is inconsistent
The estimate you saw was made on a depreciated 'trading term'. The Brazilian 'exchange' also strongly randomizes! This interferes with the 'output'. It should be noted that the 'historical series' (in video) is corrected by the exaggerated dispersion of the nominal exchange rate.
True, Brazil suffers from 'allocative inefficiencies' within its relatively chaotic productive structure (the so-called 'Brazil cost'!). To this is also added to 'statist culture': activism of 'Governament Spend', resulting in a poor allocation of 'private savings'. In addition, there is a historical collection of errors in macroeconomic policy (errors of diagnosis, precisely because of the breakdowns associated with the dispersion of the 'cycle'). This also widening the dispersion.
On the chart this is visible: it makes it look like a 'rollercoaster ride'. But notice that the trend of 'potential output' is great. At the end of the series, it's finished first, even in crisis! This means that Brazil's potential growth is 'bigger' than the growth of other countries. The Brazilian 'potential GDP' is difficult to estimate precisely because of these radomizations.
@@LEO2CBH1 , brother don't worry we Indians have seen even worse with time every developing country will do better, especially Brazil
@@tattiman9855 I know that India is also affected by the disruption of business cycles. But with these reforms begun during the 1990s, the 'India Union' have gained more 'foresight'. And with 'predictability' productive investments increase. Proof of this is that Indian infrastructures are improving visibly (electrified rail networks, stable and diversified generation electric systems, large cities are receiving large road and urban infrastructure, etc.). Indian infrastructure is already better than Brazil's: proof of effective capital accumulation! And its middle class is already bigger than the entire Brazilian population.
That is, the Indians are destined to be an economy of another scale: this is not good news for the 'Chinese', since will be bigger in long term due to the population growth. Increased population growth, largest long-term domestic market. I prefer it to be so! (ha ha ha)
@Alex Mercer I am perfectly aware that it is technological progress that is responsible for the rate of growth in the trend: it accounts for more than 87,5% of percapita product variations in long series (over 100 years cataloged in 'econometric series'!). But this analysis serves countries that already have a large stock of accumulated capital. It is the so-called 'balanced growth' attributed to R. Solow.
Developing countries simply grow by accumulating inventory (the remaining 12,5%), where the growth rate is higher! Understood!? The rate is 'higher'! So the countries that have a large population, in the future, will have more human capital (it is the most logical!). Thus, during the transition they will grow at higher rates until they converge to the long-term trend (explained by 87,5%). Once there, using the broadly accepted postulate of 'convergence of rates of expansion' in the long term, we achieve 'balanced growth'. But before, during, during the transition, the rapid movement will lead to overtaking.
You will see this, more clearly, for the next 30 years. But this would live up there!
It should be noted that countries with large (developing) demographics are already witnessing the effect of 'technological accumulation'. They do it in an 'endogenous' and faster way because of the 'market scale' (provided by the great demography)! It is inexorable: they will be the 'kings', the process is unstoppable.
The postulate of convergence is 'empirical': industry has become interchangeable because of 'globalization'. The same technique promotes convergence.
His pride is deplorable: he is a complete ignoramus!

That Brazilian "ride" is due to real (Brazilian currency) losses compared to dollar. Brazilian GDP has never dropped by half in any crisis, but every time Real loses its value. For example, from 1994 to 1997, real was artificially paired to dollar. In 2002, 1 dollar could buy almost 5 reais. In 2010, 1 dollar was 2 reais. Now it costs 4 reais. Since our economy still relies a lot on commodities it is very volatile.

About Brazils roller coaster economy: this is partly because the graphic uses EXCHANGE RATE US to local currency to measure the economy, ansd Brazil typically uses wild currency fluctuations to counteract economic downturns, thus making our economy "shrink" in dollar value to boost exports. If you use Purchase Power Parity figures, the ride will be smoother.
