love this, great version, get over it folks, the dead will live forever, saw them after i got home from viet nam, changed our lives (we had a baby daughter 8 months later), covers have always been a tribute, enjoy them, be glad you're alive
Seems to me, no matter how fantastic a song may be when performed by the originator, every now and then someone comes along and takes that song just a little further. makes it something greater than the originator could. Not for lack of skill or because it is anyway less, simply because the song has given a feeling voice in a unique and beautiful way. The Counting Crows performances of this song are the definitive to me and I do not doubt that Gerry himself with tip his hat in appreciation.
This has to be one of the greatest covers of this song, right?? I almost feel like this was the tempo/pacing the original *should* have been played at. Just sounds so right! No disrespect to The Dead.....
this is the shit i always listen to when break up with someone and i can sing in the same key as adam so i can scream as loud as i want and still sound ok
Robert Hunter added another verse when he recorded it: "You can borrow from the Devil/ You can borrow from a friend/ But the Devil'll give you twenty/ When your friend got only ten" . Kind of sums up making a cover of any classic song - Grateful Dead or others. Ten's OK but when all's said and done; twenty's better.
This version really can't be compared to the Dead's version. The Dead had a slow version and a fast version, they mostly played the slow version live. It is a lot slower and more painful than this one. The studio version is a lot more of a fun dance tune. This version by the crows meets the two in the middle. It's it's own entity. We can't judge two students by their SAT scores for the same reason we can't judge two bands by their versions of the same song, life is an introspective experience, one we only know as individuals, with all of our individual strengths and weaknesses setting the tone. Direct comparisons are absolutely worthless.
I'm not going to lie and say that I like this better than the original, but there's something to be said for Adam Duritz singing a Dead song in the only way Adam Duritz can.
Easily the best version of this song. Adam Durst can sing emotional rings around any member of The Dead, past or present, and anyway, this should've been a Moby Grape song.
No he doesn't. This cover absolutely shows that a) It's a great song at it's core. b) The original song writers did a horrible job executing it. The dead are horribly sloppy and off key....All the time
I feel the same way. Hopefully at some point (if it hasn't already happened, The Other Ones will bring Adam Duritz to sing this on tour with them. I've always been a fan of his vocal style.
Umm no. Grateful dead did this song a thousand times and everytime it was a bit different. They were the kind of band that never recognized by their studio version of the song. They kept changing them up and making them different.
+Daniel Dougan I won't necessarily say that one is better than the other, but I have to say, I think I like this version more than The Dead's version. Slowed down a little, a little easier to understand the lyrics...great listening.
+Daniel Dougan Holy flack dude, really?, I have much respect for your music taste but come on , better than the Grateful Dead !?!?!? whaaaaatttt, hahahah cheers man merry christmas!
+Kyle Belle agreed. The Dead's musicianship was REALLY suspect. Every time I hear another band covering their songs I find I always appreciate the cover version more. The Indigo Girls cover of Uncle John's Band is another good example.
It doesn't get any worse than this in cover song world. Never do a cover of someone else's song unless you can vastly improve it. Especially if you make it worse. The lyrics of this song DO NOT lend themselves, or suggest, AT ALL a slow, depressive, dark, depressing tone. The entire point is that the performer is taking all these problems in great stride and is not really burdened by his troubles --- this is his lifestyle and he sees it as a challenge. That's why the outrageous situations --- like having two wives. Or the playful way of saying that you blew your dough on something you shouldn't have --- the devil took the $20 bill and then vanished in thin air. Sorry guys.

Well said, thank you.
An incredible cover especially if you hit your prime in the 90’s.
Me too.
First time hearing this version. They do it total justice!
A friend shared a Howard Stern episode where they sang this. This version is stunning. Thank you for sharing this!
Fantastic version of this song.
To my daughter who maybe thought only the "dead" did this! Excellent!!
Excellent!!! Adam kicks the band kicks!!

This has to be one of the greatest covers of this song, right?? I almost feel like this was the tempo/pacing the original *should* have been played at. Just sounds so right! No disrespect to The Dead.....
this is like so hauntingly beautiful...
Brilliant cover.
You can always count on The Counting Crows.
Gotta respect the originals, but this version is amazing :)
Despite all these salty comments, I think CC did it proudly
This is a phenomenal cover.
Perfect song. Love you jerry g
they're both very different songs it's hard to compare them and they're both good :)
They really are a great cover band!
One of those rare cases in which the cover is better than the original. Counting Crows OWNS this song now.
Great song, thanks for posting
This is a pretty good cover.
this is the shit i always listen to when break up with someone and i can sing in the same key as adam so i can scream as loud as i want and still sound ok

So much better than the original.
I love both versions. both have great application.

I love them both
The dead suck
So much better than the dead version.
Nothing will beat the original! Grateful Dead are amazing!
mind = blown good work
Best version
I'm not going to lie and say that I like this better than the original, but there's something to be said for Adam Duritz singing a Dead song in the only way Adam Duritz can.
Adam for president.
It's not better than the dead version but they kind of dis their own thing on this cover and I can respect that
this is a nice cover, i really enjoyed listening but you gotta admit the dead is way better than this.
thank you for this
Best version love it
Love it if Bob Weir joined them!!
Ah just found this.
Spent night in stone henge x if I get home before day light just might get some sleep tonight x
Play at 1.25

Has anyone heard the Mumford and Sons version?
Derrick Hess
No but that sounds incredible.
do you know how many times i have read that on a cover song as a comment? that comment is now void because it holds as much water as a cheese grater!
This version is waaaaay better.... Sounds better than the Grateful Dead ever did it!!
David Shamolian you have bad taste
No he doesn't. This cover absolutely shows that
a) It's a great song at it's core.
b) The original song writers did a horrible job executing it.
The dead are horribly sloppy and off key....All the time
Personal view.
@@matt6805 nah they didn't care about studio versions. They killed it live almost everytime tho.
theres notin like the counting crows lovem
I never got the greatful dead they are just that imo
Grateful who?
I'm here because of Moses, the kitten :)
No kidding?
that's a maple tree.
not as good as the original but a cracking song. and vetzntrainin of course its their best album it's their "best of" :P
She got my child but it dont look like me wow that would suck
Set out running but i take my time, a friend of the devil is a freind of mine✌💞
I am not a friend of the devil. I am an enemy of satan and I serve Jesus Christ
Maybe it's because I grew up with the Counting Crows... But this version is so much better than the Grateful Dead's
I feel the same way. Hopefully at some point (if it hasn't already happened, The Other Ones will bring Adam Duritz to sing this on tour with them. I've always been a fan of his vocal style.

I will probably get a lot of flack for this, but...
Counting Crows > Grateful Dead

the song is much much better played fast
Good cover but I prefer Lyle Lovett's take on it.
❤
Not really, both versions are great, but the Dead are alottttt better in my opinion...this ones too slow or something
It is kinda slow, but it's sweet
Idk The Dead just don't have an appealing sound to me. It always sounds like something is off when they sing.
Actually the dead have a slow version too
Good version, but the one i like best is Tom Petty's version.
Listened to the original. it sucks compared this version.
NO.
So corny i can't believe they done this to such a great song
Good try fellas....
Well the dead are do it better
you are totally wrong lmao
Grateful dead and tom pettys are way better
blasphemy
eh grateful dead version is definitely better
I'm not a friend of the devil. I'm a child of God Jesus Christ. All the devil wants to do is take your soul to hell for eternity.
Take your Bronze age nonsense elsewhere.
Okay sounds good

Sorry guys.
This is an abomination...
James P
A magnificent abomination.
