What are your thoughts on my first BJJ National Tournament? Let me know! Pro Boxer vs Cyborg - BJJ World Champion (Who wins?) ruclips.net/video/A6-tjWc_glQ/видео.html
not too bad for your first one. The only piece of advice I would give that I see a lot of white belts do is either just gripping without a purpose or not fighting the opponent's grips. A lot of BJJ is about initiating your grips whilst shutting down their's
@@MrCrazykicker The biggest thing I saw, is that he was way too happy being in his opponents closed guard. It might feel okay in a MMA/"street fight" perspective, but you don't want to be there in a gi BJJ match. I don't really see it as passing the guard directly from close guard, though I guess it's a matter of definitions.

That was the best video of yours I've ever watched. Number 1,it shows what a warrior you are, but at the same time it showed your human side, nervousness,a little worry, then still being recognized as a celebrity while trying to get your mind right. I'm happy for you and your family. You cried off the pressure of past and present and let us witness it. That was great. I'm a 67 yr old athlete from Detroit Mi USA. I work out 4 to 5 times a week. I like to train,so I never have to talk myself into it. But if there is ever a day when I'm not feeling it,I will just remember this video. That will get me going. It's great to be a champion. I've been on championship teams, but never as an individual. But you are a true champion is more ways than one. CONGRATS!!
@@davepurcell1318 good luck man, be sure to warmup well and dont be surprised if the match goes by super fast, also be carefull w gripping so hard, my first comp I could barely open my hands after the first match because I had my adrenaline pretty high and gripped as hard as I could all the time on every grip. just some tips I wish someone said to me before my first com, also have a gamplan.
Tony, I've just turned 38. I used to be quite a basketball player before my knees and back gave up. Since then I have dabbled in boxing and BJJ but I have never been able to shake that has-been depression and weight. I'm gonna get out of it starting today. Thank you for your openness and honesty, I'm tired of feeling like life is over and tired of being a has-been, I want to be the best me, for me and my family. Thank you again for this.
As a brown belt who watches your vids to learn striking, it's really great seeing you pick up and compete in BJJ. I'm especially excited to learn how your career as a pro boxer contributes to your perspective as a grappler. I've met many grapplers who started off as strikers. Even though the two disciplines seem completely different, it's really cool watching you figure out how to bring movements and concepts over from one sport to the other (like how you used feinting and footwork in your matches). Can't wait to see more grappling content from you!
As a bjj purple belt of 10 years, who dabbles in boxing and is a big fan of yours (your hand wrap technique is the best ever and I send it to everyone), this is extremely inspiring and fascinating to watch. Huge respect to you and super refreshing to see the nerves and doubt from even an Olympic gold medal athlete. Love the honesty. You did great. Glad to see you fall in love with sport and realize it's one of those things you can pretty much do at full force for the rest of your life. All the best to you.

This is such a great video, honestly can't remember the last time I was fully captivated from start to finish from a long youtube video!! Congrats on the win, I felt nerves as if I was competing again just from your narrating, seriously well made vid.
I absolutely love your videos. Im 40 and recently started learning boxing (6 mo.). I've learned a lot from your videos. You inspire me to push myself and am going to compete in amateur comp to test myself and see what im capable of.
It takes a lot to humble yourself and go back to the beginning and start all over again and something new. No matter what happened in that tournament you were a winner. Just stepping on to that mat made you a winner. Well done
Mate, that was such a great watch. All those emotions you spoke about, all those thoughts, the mental and physical struggle is so relatable. I am close to 2 years training BJJ and competed Mid 2024 for the first time and I only did it because my Daughter competes all the time and thought why not since I'm there too. I came from a Kickboxing background so I was very new to the ground game. It was great to watch your video and know I am not alone with the pressure and struggles one feels leading up and even after a Competition. I ended up winning Gold but I reckon I would of felt the same way as I did with my wins if I had placed dead last. The feeling of just fighting those inner demons and stepping on the mats is the real reward. Great work Tony! been watching your BJJ journey since the beginning, great stuff. Congratulations on smashing your first tournament, you did a great job. the back-take and submission in the first fight was really good. Your strategy in the second fight was excellent, adding the sweep to build a 2-point 1-advantage lead made it even better. Congratulations on a well earned gold medal mate. Oss!

Well done Tony! You have natural talent and you’re going to be a force to reckon with so keep at it. Even when you were a couple of weeks in it was tough to contain you. It’s good to show your emotions and honestly I appreciate you putting that in the video so people can see that men also have emotions. Congratulations bud and I wish you all the best!
Thanks, Tony, for this video. You exudes the confidence each one of us needs to pursue our goals in our lives. I'm more motivated now to start training and to compete too this year. Praying for your fastest recovery. Would love to see you again uploading videos for striking and grappling. God bless.
Thanks for sharing, I was in a very similar position to you as all my focus was on boxing from the age of 15 to 27, then after I stopped boxing due to the worry of constant hits to the head I felt lost untill I started to focus on grappling martial arts (JUDO & BJJ) this past yr competed in 4 BJJ competitions and had good results in my last 2, it's an incredible feeling when you get to compete once again after such a long time! Keep it up! 🙂
Hey Tony I'm impressed for your win at the Australian Championship, I really need to see that because I last year i competed i'm a no gi tournament and I lost, but that did not affect me. That make me improve. I start Boxing like 3 years ago and your videos helps me a lot to improve and now i do BJJ like 3 days a week. My best wishes from México
Wow what a video. Really enjoyed this mate. Loving the journey so far. Congratulations on the win. This video will be great for anyone looking to get a start in any martial art whos having 2nd thoughts due to confidence.
Tony, you are a top bloke. Loved your first 30 days in BJJ which you posted at a similar time I took up BJJ at 45 years old. Great video and congratulations.
Thanks for explaining your journey. Very inspirational. Also, the thumbnail made it appeared like you lost which made me want to watch. Very creative editing
This is inspiring man! I got ko'd in a hard sparring from a hard liver shot and broke my rib, about 2 years ago, and I never got back into boxing. This really makes me wanna take those first steps to getting back into fighting form.
Congrats Tony, that was very cool. I loved every minute of that, I felt the emotions with you, that was fun. I’m also an Aussie, so good to see you with the family is Australia. I got my BJJ black belt this year at age 56, you will be amazing at this art I’m sure of that.
As Tony will know what happens. My boxing coach tried to spar with me when he was 57. I was 20/21 and smaller than him. A right hand soon had him on the floor, when he tried to turn it into a scrap. Skills often don't mean much in late 50's and the belt is more symbolic. The higher the belt. The more money they've got out of you?
I started training BJJ when I was already older than you...I never competed, & eventually I had to give it up because I got really sick...you are a natural born competitor, so maybe you'll keep competing & winning & advancing up the belts...you have a great teacher in Marcelino 😊
Thank you for being the person you are. I've been watching your vids for boxing techniques as a white belt. You just inspired me to train again to get my black belt. Let's go
This is an amazing video, and your journey to success in a completely different combat sport actually speaks volumes. Very rarely, if ever, will you see a dedicated and accomplished BJJ practitioner step into a boxing ring under boxing rules.
Hey Tony, I just came cross your video, I'm sorry I never heard of you, but I want you to know how much i enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing. I was a full time musician for 25 years, released 16 albums, Grammy Nominee. I started JIu Jitsu when i was 50 and have trained non stop for nine years (brown belt). I love Jiu Jitsu, I love competing (like you mentioned), I love doing the extra hard work, off the mats (strength & conditioning), so I compete at a high level. Its a lot of work. After the video, I'm a Big Fan! Happy New Year!!!
Hey! Amazing story mate! I stopped skateboarding in my late twenties and really let myself go, but I took up jitz like you did, got the bug and started competing also. Managed to take gold in no -gi in my div that day at the same comp (I just noticed my bags were behind you when you were crying :P). So happy for you to find yourself in BJJ, I went through a massive change after taking it up. It's amazing with your boxing background describing the pressure of competition, but afterwards you're so overwhelmed with joy and releif. Even when you lose, it's a blessing because it will drive you to improve your game plan. One thing for certain is if you'd like to get better at BJJ, just compete and you will sharpen yourself so quickly. And with every win, your confidence builds, and with every loss, the hunger comes back and little details become more improtant then ever. Enjoy the process mate! Congratulations on your performance!!
hi Tony, great video.. and congratulations on you win ! I've watched loads of your boxing videos and really enjoyed them, but this one was emotional !! Thoroughly enjoyed it, and it's given me hope that after 5 years of training, I might one day fight competitively. Maybe at 61 years that's perhaps not a good idea, but we don't know how good we are until we expose ourselves do we ? Great to see your family.. you must be very proud of them ! All the best. Jonathan
Man, that's just plain awesome to have the wife and kids all there to share in the suspense and victory, but even better than all that for me was the kids yelling "LOOP CHOKE"! That's the icing on the cake!
As much as I'm impressed by all you've done as an athlete, I'm much more impressed by the dad and husband you appear to be. Take it from a 66 year old man, Dad and Husband are the most important roles you'll ever play in your life. I have a couple of daughters your age and 2 granddaughters. I can't tell you how important it is for the girls to have a close relationship with their dad. You are the model for the men they will choose in their lives. Dad and Husband..... the true measure of who you are as a man and human being. Well done young man!!
My man. You have embraced jiu jitsu. Welcome to the family. I'm just waiting for your video headings changing from former Olympic boxer to jiu jitsu black belt 😂😎 Well done brother, you're smashing it!!
I am a black belt in Brazilian Ji jitsu but I recently switched over to wing chun. I think it's great to switch arts and try the experience of being a new student again. Great video ! Good luck in your journey!
Great video. I just ordered "way of the warrior kid" we practice taekwondo, but i believe this book will be a great thing to read with my 11 year old. I want to have him get into jujitsu eventually, but only if he wants to. I've never trained in it myself, but hold a black belt in taekwondo, so we decided to have him try that first, and he loves it. He is a green belt now (6th gup). I love listening to Jocko Willinks already, and didn't realize he had a kids book. We've been working on my sons self confidence, and his sportsmanship in general, wo the timing of mentioning it was perfect.
Mate well done, I'm same age as you, had one nogi comp after training a few months, the adrenaline dump after the first fight was unreal, you did so well, in front of your lovely family!! Well done. I'd found something I didn't like about myself in the deep waters of competition, but having seen you get at it, and I'm now loving the gi, I'm definitely gonna compete in 2025. Congratulations on your blue belt mate. You're a sound lad!!
Great work, you probably felt overwhelmed and haven't had such a big adrenaline dump in a while followed by a feeling of relief. I've seen some of the toughest guys I've met cry after BJJ tournaments because they put so much pressure on themselves, these are proper tough guys who were bouncers and police officers
Winning after no wins in a long time is a great feeling, especially a gold with no losses on the day. Great job, I hope to see you compete again soon, Mr Jeffries.
I didn't imagine someone like Tony feeling under pressure going into a martial art where you're not risking getting KO'd, you can just tap out when you get caught, you can't tap out of a left hook.
Martial arts isn't only great for self defense it's great for the discipline exercise stretching self confidence I started training when I was nine I studied wing Chun, kung fu and little tai chi , Jeet kune Do, and boxing entered in countless tournaments full contact I just enjoyed training competition I'm 50 now I know longer compete I stopped once I turned 40 I still train but now focus my life on music lol big difference but I've been playing guitar for over 20 years instead of fighting I play music and it pays well. Although I'm considering fighting again one more tournament old habits never die .
Best advice I can give is when you have closed guard. Learn to sweep. Hip bump, pendulum and scissor when you have guard. Then learn a technical standup from closed guard bottom. Learn submissions that you can chain together. Ie. Hip bump to a guillotine to 100 percent sweep. As a blue belt. Chaining submissions are imprtant. Hope this helps. You did really good.
Congrats on the win and finding your passion for competition again. I imagine it won't be too long before you're a blue belt. Especially with a big tournament win like this.

I love Jiu Jitsu, I love competing (like you mentioned), I love doing the extra hard work, off the mats (strength & conditioning), so I compete at a high level. Its a lot of work. After the video, I'm a Big Fan! Happy New Year!!!
Thanks for watching, that's an amazing journey you've had mate - good luck in future
You are the man Tony, that was amazing!
Love your videos tony, your story is an inspiration and the more I stay in the combat sports community the less I wanna do any other sport
Always been a fan of your channel man, keep up the great work!!! ❤
Thanks Tony, you’ve given me extra inspiration to get back into contact sports at nearly 42!
LOVE seeing this journey you've been on bro.
Thanks for the support mate! 🙏🏼
Men, so happy for you Tony, keep training. You are amazing. Happy for your kids too.
Appreciate the support mate, means a lot
Great video Tony . Many congratulations on your national win . I know how daunting it is competing in BJJ . 💪
Purple belt here. I've been training off and on since 2010, and I can say for certain you didn't start too late. Good job in winning your tournament!
I got emotional in my first tournament as a white belt too, and to see that you did as well is very uplifting and validating. Thanks for sharing!
Your boxing foot work is actually really beneficial. Keep adding skillsets.
Thanks man, I'm trying to incorporate everything I can into my game.
Super inspirational. Congrats Tony
hi Tony, great video.. and congratulations on you win !
Jonathan
Thank you ma man- this comment means alot a lot
Wow, you absolutely killed it in that tournament. You’re a warrior .
You did really well. Cheers Tony !
so awesome. inspirational and demonstrates that with hard work and passion, nothing is impossible. keep it going. congratulations
I'm just waiting for your video headings changing from former Olympic boxer to jiu jitsu black belt 😂😎
Well done brother, you're smashing it!!
Thank you 🙏🏼 means a lot
you over came yourself and being an athlete your whole came full circle, you felt a feeling and emotions you haven't felt in a long time.
Thank you 🙏🏼 appreciate it
Congrats on your win Tony. I think white belt tournaments are the most brutal and exhausting. You got two points for the sweep.
Great job putting yourself out there like that! Congratulations on the win. You had already won the more important battle just by getting on the mat.
I am a black belt in Brazilian Ji jitsu but I recently switched over to wing chun. I think it's great to switch arts and try the experience of being a new student again. Great video ! Good luck in your journey!
Nice 1 mate , how is it ?
Great video. I just ordered "way of the warrior kid" we practice taekwondo, but i believe this book will be a great thing to read with my 11 year old. I want to have him get into jujitsu eventually, but only if he wants to. I've never trained in it myself, but hold a black belt in taekwondo, so we decided to have him try that first, and he loves it. He is a green belt now (6th gup). I love listening to Jocko Willinks already, and didn't realize he had a kids book. We've been working on my sons self confidence, and his sportsmanship in general, wo the timing of mentioning it was perfect.
Thanks for sharing Tony! Great video. Lots of respect for getting on that matt, you did brilliant and made the your girls proud.
Means alot Matt Thank you 🙏🏼
What a journey bud! Huge ✊
And the story continues ✌️🙏
See you are on the way to 3mil sir!!!
LFG!!!
Been around since you were under 2mil! I love this channel!!!! 🇬🇧 ❤ 🇺🇸
Great video. Enjoy watching your videos and your absolute honesty about the experience….. that blue belt isn’t far off! 👍🏻
Good stuff mate yeah it’s great
Great work, you probably felt overwhelmed and haven't had such a big adrenaline dump in a while followed by a feeling of relief.
I've seen some of the toughest guys I've met cry after BJJ tournaments because they put so much pressure on themselves, these are proper tough guys who were bouncers and police officers
I appreciate it mate
Winning after no wins in a long time is a great feeling, especially a gold with no losses on the day. Great job, I hope to see you compete again soon, Mr Jeffries.
I didn't imagine someone like Tony feeling under pressure going into a martial art where you're not risking getting KO'd, you can just tap out when you get caught, you can't tap out of a left hook.
Congrats on the win! Excited to see your next one.
Thank you ma man means alot
Awesome video mate ! Im the guy at the start in the black gi !
Deadly mate loved this video. My two kids train over a year im currently training 2 months now this has motivated me to compete💪
Great to hear mate it really is
Excellent coach. Great performance on the mats. All the best in this new year!!!
Same to you! And Thank you 🙏🏼
Awesome story telling and explanation to your nerves! Also, nice pass and turtle control to the back in the first match.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
I agree, appreciate the sharing mate
Inspiring video. Loved the energy ❤
Solid man, many boxing coaches have big egos and can't handle switching something else and face adversity
Congratulations! Keep up the good work!
Way to go Tony! You are very inspiring! Love your videos!
Appreciate it mate 🙏🏼
thanks for sharing! congrats! that advice is amazing
