- Here we cover my top watch picks for quartz watches. In watches, there have been many that have overlooked quartz watches. Though, as time continues, brands have begun to release additional quartz watch models. Included we will talk about Breitling, Omega, Patek, Rolex, and Grand Seiko.

The first Omega worn in a Brosnan bond film was the wave-dial SMP with a QUARTZ movement, not with the mechanical movement.
My father has this watch and I only recently found out the original was a quartz rather than an automatic. This made me fall in love with the watch even more!
Quartz is the way to go. ❤️💕🥰💜💞❣️
I have a Bulova Precisionist - 262,000 Hz and smoothly flowing second hand - and I couldn't resist the offer price I got of only $99.
There are a number of these precisionist and UHF models. In lots of different colours and even compressor styles.
Citizen Ana digi is also a class act
You didn't mention the Citizen Chronomaster, aka "The Citizen." They're high accuracy, to +-5 seconds a year, with perpetual calendars, many are solar powered Eco-Drive, many are very scratch resistant "Duratect" titanium, and they have some interesting designs. From what I've seen, I would say that their fit, finish, and design are just half a step below Grand Seiko. I think they could be the ultimate set it and forget watch. The one downside, they are JDM, so are hard to get in the United States, except on the gray market from Japan (the Citizen boutique in New York Times Square has a few). Citizen also has some other high end quartz lines, like the ultrathin Eco-Drive One, which sell in Asia, but are unknown elsewhere.
Thanks. It came to mind but they are unavailable for the larger part of the audience. I do agree though that from what I have seen, they look pretty great. Nice dials and cases, looking at images. Do you have one?
Yes, I got a couple of months ago. I had my eye on a Grand Seiko quartz, but got turned onto the Chronomaster. The Eco-Drive and perpetual calendar sold me. I like it quite a lot. I also have a Spring Drive, so my two favorite watches have quartz inside.
Totally agree regards Citizen... The other thing with all my Citizens, is that the second hand hits the mark which few others do..
Or the Citizen Campanola line of watches.
As I’m grabbing my watch while running out of the house I don’t want to have to stop and adjust and wind my automatic watch ! It’s literally a pain in the butt!
Very nice topic John!! There are really good quartz movements out there, Grand Seiko 9F series as you pointed, Seiko 8F (previously used in some Grand Seikos) Omega 1538 used in Seamaster and Aquaterras and so many others. Piaget quartz movements are also top quality. Using the black roman numerals as solar cells was a really smart move from Cartier.
Thank you! Thank you for watching!
I will say the finishing is not as good on the GS quartz (9F movement) as it is on their spring drive (notably the Snowflake), especially the hands and hour indices, under a microscope/macro lens. But the 9F watches are damn nice though, but not GS’s best foot forward.
@@robertschmidt9584 Accurately stated. As far as I know high-end Seikos using spring drives like the Marine Master are also assembled in the same Shizuku-ishi Watch Studio and their finishing pairs with 9F-GS series. Same factory but Springdrives-GS definetely get more attention to detail, wich means extra hours of hand-finishing and better quality of materials.
Thanks for the video, John. I can't speak for the American or European market, but in East Asia the watch has become an important fashion
accessory, especially for women. As a result, manufacturers are adding quartz to many of their lines since watch sales in this part of the
world have grown substantially in recent decades. and a fashion accessory doesn't have to be mechanical.
I have the quartz Bond Seamaster and it's my favorite watch.
I love my 9F. I wear my grandfather’s vintage Omega and my engagement auto, but my SBGV005 is my everyday.
Good discussion, John.
Yes, I have automatics, hand-wound, quartz-battery, quartz-kenetic, and quartz-solar watches. I think you can find merit in all kinds movements.
I own a longines conquest quartz and I absolutely love it and I find myselve going for that watch the most by far because it keeps time very accurate and it’s a “set it and forget it watch” so it doesn’t matter if I haven’t worn it for 2 weeks, the time is still accurate.
Excellent topic. We all need a grab and go watch on days we’re running late. I regret selling a quartz Grand Seiko a few years ago.
But it's Quartz.😬
I have a GS SBGN007 with a 9F movement and enjoy the watch. Super accurate and great looking watch.
A note about the 9F and other movements in Grand Seiko all being led with a “9”. This is because 9 in Japanese cutler and numerology is considered a perfect number, so all of the movements will always have a 9 in the front, as they are considered to be the pinnacle of whatever technology they embody. So, there will almost certainly never be a 10F, or a 10S, as the 9 is a statement of approaching or embodying the closest thing to perfection possible.
I have wonderful Longines Conquest VHP GMT (great high precision watch for traveling) and Hamilton PSR limited golden edition (which has doubled in price since it was purchased a year ago).
I have the Longines Conquest VHP GMT also for the same reason. I was going to buy a Tudor GMT but in the end accuracy and function won me over as I couldn’t ultimately accept having a watch that was less accurate. I was looking longingly at a JLC Polaris Mariner Memovox recently but for that money you could have a trio of Grand Seikos: a winter and spring seasons along with a F9 quartz GMT for every day and out in the field. I know that for some people it is the mechanics that is the romance and no quartz movement will satisfy but I know that not to have the most accurate available is ignoring the very thing that a watchmaker strives for. Thankfully my manual wind inherited zenith dress watch offers me the mechanical experience but most days it is quartz that serves me best.
I have the GS SBGP015 with the 9F85 quartz movement. My connection to it is that it's so accurate. Got it around Christmas last year and it's been running dead on since. Also has the jumping hour hand, so a great travel companion.
My preference is a slim dress watch and a case and a Quartz movement can be made thinner, this is why I love my Cartier Santos Galbee quartz watch.
Great value quartz watches are the early to mid 1970s Seiko quartz watches as they were over engineered and cost more than a mechanical Rolex Submariner in their time. They are fanstastic qualty and still going strong 50 years on, you can pick up a nice watch for 2 to 300 euros at the moment.
1990 Omega Quarz Seamaster ( 200M) SS and Gold.
Comfortable, Best watch ever !
34 year and still going strong !
Bought my Seamaster Bond Quartz from back in 2001. It has been dead on ever since. As we all know, it also glows like a beacon. But I’ve never had it serviced, except for battery changes and fixing of the collars in the band which would unexplainably come out, yet with a loose bezel and some nicks, it is time to get this done. Base repair at Omega is around $450. Add in a new bezel, I’m probably looking at $550 for repair. Not bad I guess, especially after 20 years of ownership (hard to believe). I mention that it may be time to part ways with it and get some money, and perhaps purchase a couple of micro brands. My son was like, ‘dad, you’re crazy, why would you sell it!’ Well, some of the brands are very interesting, and we’re not around back in 2001. And they’re either Quartz or Meca Quartz. I’d rather stay away from automatics.
You’d should give it to your son if you’re ready to let it go. Pass it on!
Yes Mr J!!!!!! Excellent upload 💪💪💪💪
Thank you !!!!!
Although I feel a bit more connected to the mechanical (auto or hand-wind) movements, some quartz are very interesting. Things like the Grand Seiko 9F quartz movements, Longines V.H.P., and even Bulova high accuracy movements are attractive from a technical standpoint. I'm a techie, so maybe that's why that also is appealing. The new solar Cartier Tank is also appealing for similar reasons. I think people are starting to want something a little different, and we'll continue to see interest in "higher end" quartz go up. I know some people, like my baby boomer father, aren't interested in setting mechanical watches if not worn, nor do they want the service costs. I was looking for a decent watch with certain requirements for my father, and it was hard to find a quartz movement in luxury brands, which was a little surprising. I think every collection should have at least 1 grab and go quartz too. The Oysterquartz models are definitely interesting to me (from a design standpoint too), but the prices are a bit more than I would pay for them. I'm a little surprised Rolex doesn't produce any at this time, not even in the "ladies" lines. I wonder if that will change in the next 5-10 years.
I own a 9F, and when I wear it I feel over the top 😉
Not really into digital watches but the Hamilton PSR is FANTASTIC!!
Mid-2000s Omega Seamaster Quartz or New Sinn 556. Which is better quality/build?
I love my 2541. I wear my 2541 more than my contemporary Seamaster
I don’t have any watches right now I’m my 4 watch collection but I think I would if it serves a purpose. As a wear everyday in many different situations a Seiko gmt 9f Quartz would be a good choice. Same finishing and detail as any of their other watches. Also their quartz movement it’s petty much made in house as they fire their own crystals and hand finish the movement like any of their other movements. The Breitling endurance would be great as well as I hike pretty much every weekend, go to the gym everyday, and I’m a physical therapist as my occupation. Great brand and you don’t have to be afraid to bang it around. I usually wear my other watches to work but when I bang my omega it hurts a little bit in my soul.
I was after a Rolex OP39 and was ready to buy and then they discontinued it. :( Fed up with Rolex, I instead went for a Grand Seiko 9F Quartz driven GMT (SBGN005). It's a great watch and I love it, it's my grab and go watch if I'm in a hurry. You do get the odd funny look when you explain how much a quartz watch cost, but as long as I'm happy (clue - I am) it doesn't matter.
John, great job swimming against the tide and introducing the fact that there are collectors out there who own & wear nice quartz watches. I started my watch journey after I got married, and most of my collection is quartz. First, quartz watches are less expensive to own because the only required maintenance is to get a new battery every 3 years or so. Second, women prefer the convenience of setting and forgetting a quartz watch. Without getting into a discussion about watches being an investment, many of my quartz watches have really nice dials, which attracted me to the watch in the first place, and I was able to buy at a discount. Everyone's watch collecting journey is different, but the I have kept the watches I own because I enjoy wearing them.
FP Journe Elegante? Parmigiani Quartz gold finished movements? Chopard super quartz? I think you missed out on the research for this one. Btw Britelite is plastic.
Great topic and watch choices. I also like and am looking at the Longines v.h.p watches. They seem like great value to me.
Those VHPs are very interesting and unique watches. And the prices aren't outrageous for what you get.
Owner of a GS 9F and could be happier. The best movement out there
I love the Grand Seiko GMT (as shown in your video). It's interesting that Adrian (Bark and Jack) and Federico both had variations of this very watch but sold them shortly afterwards because they couldn't connect with it. That's the only thing that scares me from buying a GS SBGN005.
I just had a memory flash four hours after writing this. Federico has a Spring Drive that he couldn't connect with, and Adrian had the SBGN001 9f.
Interesting video John and I agree on desirable quartz. My wife chose a quartz versus automatic Breitling because she didn’t want to set/wind it. One point of order though. The Japanese did not invent statistical quality control. Deming introduced it to them after WW2. They certainly adopted it in a world-class fashion.
Oh John, IOU a sub! Greetings from Prime and your channel is looking great!
Mostly an Omega guy, I have both the automatic and quartz versions of both the Bond Seamaster and the sword hands 2254.50 (2254.60 in quartz) - the later in both the black and electric blue dials. I wear the quartz watches more than the autos. It’s just easy to pick them up and go. I also have an Aqua Terra quartz that I have on a leather strap as my rarely worn dress watch. Serves its purpose perfectly.
I want to buy a watch and I want your opinion please. Casio or Citizen ? Thanks
Another one to consider is the Sinn UX dive watch. Rated to 5000 meters it beats almost every other dive watch in that measurement. To do that it is filled with oil and apparently because of that the torque requirements to move the hands can only be done with a quartz. The oil also make reading the hands quite clear and easy which is another plus. Changing the battery however is a pain. You have to send it to Germany for not only the battery change but also the oil and it takes a good while to do but it only done every few years so there is that. Sinn does have mechanical dive watches but they don't have that depth rating.
My favourite quartz watch is the Omega Aqua Terra, great deals can be found on these on the used market.
I have the Longines Hydroconquest 39mm Quartz. New it was only $700 and it is 2mm thinner than the automatic. Longines also does the Conquest in quartz.
Yes, have a few funny quartz beaters. I think quartz is great if you want that fun funky summertime watch. Love them!!
I recently just purchased Rolex 19018 Oysterquartz President in 18K with the integrated bracelet. It still keeps amazing time and I believe these watches are back. The fact that it is believed to be a very low production model makes the collecting potential high IMO. I am going to try and find another example in the all stainless jubilee moving forward. Truthfully I love this watch because of the bracelet and case design wrapped in traditional Rolex design. It's so great, it's instantly recognized as a Rolex but you just don't see these everyday in top condition. I have never had the pleasure of seeing one of the super rare white gold presidents in person. I will stay in the hunt. High quality quartz does not bother me one bit. I would readily buy a Royal Oak in Quartz at any moment given the opportunity as well as other models such as the Calatrava John mentioned.
The Chronosport UDT Sea quartz equipment with a Breitling movement aka The Rambo 2 watch is the only quartz watch I own. For when I need to TCB😎 a true watch geek will definitely know this watch
I've recently bought a Pulsar PSR20, a high accuracy quartz watch currently gaining 1.5 seconds a month. It's not thermo-compensated like the high end quartz movements just a Seiko Y302 calibre with a predicted accuracy of 20 seconds a year but if you can find one you can pick one up for under £20. It has a brother in the PSR10 with claimed accuracy of 10 seconds a year and one sold on ebay this month for £5, I only saw it after the auction ended. The downside is that they are ugly as hell and for me accuracy is far less important than build quality or how good the watch looks on your wrist so the Pulsar stays in the watch box and is just a reference watch to set my other watches to.
I was really interested in this video as my initial foray into watches was a quartz Omega Seamaster with only a broken bezel derailing the purchase. I also looked at a couple of Grand Seiko's but found their lack of strap options for larger wrists a problem and I found their bracelets total rubbish. If they ever fix that I will be back to add one to my collection. But over 20 minutes of just you talking was beyond my capacity to stave off boredom.
I don’t see the issue in quartz movements and want one for my collection so I have all 3 types of movements (quartz, automatic , manual wind). I do like the Rolex Oysterquartz 17000. The movement took 5 years to make so it has real quality. I am looking for an Oysterquartz 17000 to buy, the problem is they are so rare!!
I have both 9F GS and Quarts Seamaster.
some how the battery life is so much longer on SMP than GS.
I've had the seamaster for about 20years and still wearing it today and wins over GS 9F
because I had to get GS 9F servised but I have not had a single problem with the seamaster
You should of mentioned the space view also I think Hamilton came out with the first electric watch in 1948 most of my daily wear watches are swiss quartz other than that are automatics if I bought a very expensive watch it would never be quartz I've had movements die and they are not cheap.
High accuracy quartz have grown on me a lot the past couple years. Cool video!
Every collector NEEDS a radio controlled gshock.
Have a Tuna Grand seiko and G shock titanium square not disappointed with quartz watches at all. Coming from someone who has a Omega Seamaster. Plus ➕ great video
I own a Seiko LX SNR045 (Spring Drive) and there might be something wrong with it. It is only the 4th most accurate watch I own~ behind (in order) my Suunto X-Lander, Seiko SQ 2 & Omega Aquaterra Worldtimer... that is correct... an auto watch is more accurate. If there isn't something wrong with the spring drive movement, then I'm very disappointed.
I would have considered the Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches as well.
I like quartz and specifically solar watches. I believe in technology and science - so for me, any fascination of mechanical watches is similar to a fascination with steam-engine cars. Maybe Intellectually interesting, but not that useful nor appropriate for most people.
I got the limited edition sbgn001 because I was attracted to the accuracy
This was pretty interesting. And maybe I wouldn't necessarily start a rigorous search for one or more of these. But if one presented itself, I would at the very least consider it. Good talk!
they are especially good if one works in an inviroment with lots com computers and magnetism which would ruin many automatic pieces ..
Seiko spring drive would be a solid number 6.
Hmmmm. It’s not pure quartz. So no, should not be on this specific list
I prefer a good quartz than an average mechanical movement
I have U-Boat Darkmoon and i love it.
I do have some quartz ! I still have the first watch I purchased with my first job back in 1998... its a citizen rectangular case watch. Interesting that you didn’t mentioned GS spring drive or citizens array of quartz/eco drives
What do I care what the "watch enthusiasts" like. You lot all buy the same watches. Quartz is fine in my opinion. I have a couple Grand Seikos. A Sinn UX. My beater is a Marine Master and my grail is an FP Journe Elegante.
Omega still produces the Seamaster in a quartz variant. Cartier offers a quartz tank watch as an entry level offering.
John we want to see the watches!! Yall have some many interesting ones on Delray. Show us them. Kind of a watch box style of video.
id say solar+multi band is better than 9f for the pursuit of absolute accuracy
FP Journe Elegante?
How about solar powered watches, thanks John.
I have a Rado Juvile Diastar that my Mother gave back in 2002 for my birthday and it still works like a Champion. My collection has over 12 watches to include Omega,Longines,Rolex and Oris but this quartz watch gets so much more attention than the rest of them combine.
ditto on what Ian said
Thank you !!!
Quartz watches are a very serious part of watch industry. They have their purpose training tennis riding etc . Every serious collector needs one. Except when you are such a snob that needs to show off at the gym or swimming pool his 20.000 watch.
Quartz Watches are still the Best Watches for functionality..Period...My 20$ Casio Worldtime does more than a Rolex could ever do. 🤷♂️
sick motel
👍⭐️👍⭐️👍⭐️👍⭐️👍⭐️👍⭐️
Campanola
Too much talking
Too much talking head, not enough watches.
If you like quartz watches good for you. I am not a fan.
Passionate John in the house! I’m all for having a quartz or two in the collection, especially 9f GS. Thanks for another good take
Thank you Mark !
Quartz are for people who actually want a robust and functioning watch. Automatics are jewelry!
