You must respect your legacy characters, it's the reason people are buying your game/movie/book.
@@mrdarkstar3756 I don’t mean to come off as rude, but this really doesn’t sound very good as a story structure. I don’t like when media introduce a character simply to die just to motivate a character in their quest for vengeance. It just rarely captives viewers enough to feel the emotions our protagonist would be feeling, so it can end up becoming uninteresting. I feel there’d also be some backlash over introducing another love interest for Ellie, only to then kill her off. Either that or Ellie is just super unlucky when it comes to her romantic relationships. I feel like Joel confessing and Ellie simply forgiving him on the spot also rips away a huge chunk of complexity to the story, and plays it far too safe to be interesting. In the way you’ve described it, it feels more like a plot point that needs to be forced out, simply because it was in the last game. Through Ellie also forgiving Joel right away, it means the plot point is over. It’s brushed under the rug. It’s also thematically a little jarring, since Ellie would presumably be on an isolating, bloodthirsty quest for vengeance, but would then also take a moment to forgive Joel and say she loves him. The theme of loss should really be so involved within Joel and Ellie’s relationship. Joel facing zero consequences for his actions is also very bizarre narrative decision. He is responsible for a vaccine not being created, because he couldn’t handle losing Ellie. Regardless of if people agree or disagree with his actions, in the game world people probably wouldn’t appreciate him doing that, especially Ellie! She should be angry at him for what he did, perhaps even hate him. It fuels her quest for vengeance even further, as her anger only grows. She pushes people away, she’s losing herself until Joel is able to save her. That’s really the only way Joel having the heroic sacrifice works, in my opinion, through him now committing a selfless act to save Ellie, instead of a selfish one. Respecting legacy characters doesn’t mean they cannot face consequences in the narrative. I’ve always really disliked this idea that Joel facing any consequences, or even being framed as in the wrong, is somehow disrespectful to his character. I think people should be allowed to critique his death scene, or even believe that it itself was an act of disrespect. But in my opinion, him being free of any consequence would’ve been an equal disservice to the character as many believe his canon death already is.
@@WAnnett1302 no offense taken, you can do something else with Dina but choosing to have her abandon Ellie off screen is essentially the same as killing her, she doesn't have to die right away it's just notes. The point is Joel deserved to actually be in the game and making Ellie hate him him for years doesn't make much sense and you see her go on a long killing spree for a guy she was angry at for years.
@@mrdarkstar3756 Thanks for being so nice about a response :) I totally get what you mean, but I’d argue it’s quite a crucial point in their relationship, and fits nicely into the theme of loss. Dina would also have to essentially die at the point Joel does for her to serve as the catalyst of the plot. I can understand the argument for more Joel though. Him being less present really made me love those flashbacks even more. I feel like Ellie’s feelings towards Joel feel quite consistent with her younger attitude, whilst also feeling developed enough to make her feel like she’s more mature now? (Hopefully that makes sense) My own understanding of why Ellie wants revenge comes from the scene where Ellie says she wants to try forgiving Joel/which is also their last conversation. Abby took Ellie’s chance away to forgive Joel, and I think a lot of the resentment comes from there
