  • Don Knotts stars in one of the best horror comedies ever - The Ghost and Mr. Chicken! I take a look back at what made the movie so awesome!
In 1966, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken came to the big screen. Birthed from The Andy Griffith Show, the legendary actor and comedian, Don Knotts, wanted to make a movie with a spooky, haunted house. He plays the timid typesetter, Luther Heggs, who gets an opportunity to research the town ghost story. Will he uncover the truth behind the deaths of the Simmons family? Will he see the ghost of old man Simmons playing the haunted organ at midnight?
Find out why from top to bottom, this film is scary, full of laughs, and stands the test of time. Also starring Joan Staley as Alma, Liam Redmond as Kelsey, with Vic Mizzy (The Addams Family) composing a fantastic soundtrack.

If you really want to help sell this classic movie, you have to tell people to make sure that they stay for the ending. One of the best endings ever! I remember seeing The Ghost and Mr Chicken in the historical Fox Theatre when it was still a movie theatre and the reaction of the audience to the ending was priceless! Definitely a wonderful example of why going to the movies should be an experience to be treasured!

2 of my favorite Don Knotts movies, "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" & "The incredible Mr. Limpet". GREAT MOVIES! Can't go wrong with Don Knotts. I just watched "The Reluctant Astronaut" on TCM not long ago. They just don't make movies like this anymore!

Omg, this video makes me feel so validated! One of my elementary school teachers was super into Andy Griffith, and she showed us this movie. I vaguely remembered something about a spooky movie with Barney from that show, but I genuinely thought it could have been fake. Thanks for making me remember it, lol.

I remember my parents taking my sisters and I to see this classic at a local drive-in theater! What a treat! We all had our supper from the refreshments stand and watching this wonerful film on a big screen created a cherished memory of fun family times together!
I never could figure out the other mystery in this film's storyline, though....
Who was the guy in the courtroom who kept screaming, "Atta' boy, Luthor!" ?

I finally broke down and purchased a dvd that came with his other movies. I would like to do a vlog with you one of these days. Thank you for giving us happiness. Your friend Bighoss.

I saw it on TV when I was about 8 years old back in the early 1970's. The only scene I remember is the scene of him looking at the blood stained organ as it played- but that music- it scared the heck out of me and I have rembered it my whole life- even though I never saw the movie again. Time t o fix that and watch it as an adult.

There's so many subtle little things that happen in each scene. For example, you highlighted the two old ladies bickering at the table, I just watched this movie a week or so ago and realized that the lady sitting on the end gets her soft boiled egg stolen by character royalty, Burt Mustin. I never saw that detail before last week and it cracked me up big time!

thank you for this. i LOVE this little movie. i always say this + abbott and costello meet frankestein are tied for first place as being my all time favorite comedy film(s). i was 4 in 1966. the local drive-in posted a placard in the window of the local laundry mat featuring the schedule of the upcoming summer movies soon to play there. the film that caught my eye the most was actually mario bava's blood and black lace. i could tell it was a scary movie, but my sister who was 9 years my senior thought it was a dirty movie. any way there was no way i was going to get to see it. then w-a-y down at the bottom of the poster was the gost and mr chicken. my sister said that i could go see that, but not blood and black lace. keep in mind at 4 i could not yet read. i was just going by the art that accompanied each film. finally the ghost and mr. chicken was playing. my mom, my sister, one of her friends loaded up and to the drive-in we went. it was a very hot night. our car windows were rolled down. nearby there was a station wagon parked and it's windows were also rolled down. the guy in the station wagon laughed and laughed. we would laugh at the antics on the screen and then we would laugh at his laughter. i will admit that some of the scary stuff i actually found to be frightening at the age of 4. there was no way possible that the 4 year old me could have withstood a mario bava horror film! the score made a huge impression upon me. the karate chop that beheaded the mannequin was my most favorite scene. it was probably the most fun i have ever had going to the movies. by the way, my favorite episode of the andy griffith show show is 'the haunted house.' thanks again!

When Luther, the Judges, Mr. Simmons, and the rest see the painting, the close-up of it seems to show a Band-Aid covering the rip when the sheers were. Of course was the blood washable without ruining the painting? One other thing I wonder is how did Kelsey move the andiron over the fireplace when Luther was there to open the secret passage? Did he have a string attached to it? Maybe Luther was too scared of the scary laughter to notice it was moved. Also, was the said laughter genuine or a recording Kelsey had made or bought and used hidden microphones? The phonograph I think played when Luther bumped onto the table it was set on. I can see the whole table move before it plays and scares him. Also, was Kelsey behind the bush and used the 2x4 to hit the drunk at the beginning? If so, he would have had to wait till either both Luther and the woman was gone to leave, or he sneaked into the grounds and trees before they got to the drunk man's body. What are your thoughts?

@@phantomrewind209 It was the screenwriter, Everett Greenbaum. The idea came from Andy Griffith.

  • @TheMeJustMe75

Interesting facts: The lady who played Alma was actually blonde and was featured in Playboy. Andy Griffith was a writer for the movie but didn't want credit. Don showed him the script and Andy told him it was terrible. Don went back to the writer that it needed rewrites and ask that Andy help with the writing. Fun Fact: Most of the secondary characters had reoccurring roles on the Andy Griffith Show or was in at least one episode. Taro Taro Salamon!

Great review! Love this film👍🏻 If I was to pick at something though it would be the Barney Fife Easter Eggs 😑I don’t mind that he basically played Barney but “My whole body’s a weapon”, the “my mother” references, and the back and forth argument bit at the beginning of the film with Hal Smith (Otis Campbell) just seemed like too many winks at the Mayberry and Barney Fife fans to me and just silly imo. Kinda took me out of the movie. But still a good film!
