In the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, the parents stay with the youngest daughter and the husband comes and stay in the wife's house as it is believed that no matter how good the daughter in law is, it's the daughter who will take care of the parents better. The youngest daughter is also the custodian of the family's property and upon the death of her parents receive the major share of the property and wealth as a token of appreciation for taking care of the parents in their old age. And why does the youngest daughter have to take care of the parents, because by the time the parents grow old, the eldest daughter would have started to grow old too. The youngest daughter would still have enough of energy to take care of the parents. The men are respected in their wife's house as the main daily bread earner and provider and protector in the wife's house and also as the uncle in his parents house who is to manage his parents property and support his sisters in deciding various clan matters. And yes dowry is non-existent in their dictionary as usually both parents work and provide for their children. A wife may be a temporary house wife only when she has recently given birth and is weaning. Life is very hard in the hills, so no other way out but for both parents to earn a living.
Children also take the titles of their mothers and not their father's. It is one of the last surviving and practising matrilineal system which predates the patriarchy system.
Thank you so much for your long explanation, i have heard about this matrilineal system. It is something i read a lot about it, and it is a complete different kind of culture. In my opinion really strong and powerful 🙏

It does come with its own loop holes as well especially in these changing times when society has become more nuclear and the people are moving away from being agrarian. But yes it's an ancient race where cultures and customs have been tried and tested through thousands of years and then adopted and practiced. Surprisingly this part of history of the world has been preserved due to the isolation of the people for so long. The instruments used, the naming of places, the monoliths dotted all over the country side speak of a chapter straight out of the megalithic age.

@@snowangee4276 it's a correction it is not known as Seng khasi Dance it is organised by them but the actual name is the Shad Suk Mynsiem (aka the thanks giving dance). The event is held on the 2nd week of April every year.
Khasi tribe is a unique one in india. They follow matrilineal society and are very nice

Not sure but We can say that we originate from Australia but Europeans are more in the australia & our language the Austro Asiatic language
The people from Australia came from Europe in the past. Not the Aborigines/ natives. But the second people which came to Australia, mostly are from Irland!
