  • Supported silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)-based point-of-use water disinfection systems are a proven technology. However, the system’s mass deployment is hampered due to uncontrolled silver ions released from the products and AgNPs’ interaction with co-ions and natural organic matter in water. The Sustainable Antimicrobial Film Enabled (SAFE) water disinfection system developed at IIT Tirupati can protect AgNPs for a prolonged period and release silver ions (disinfectant) at a controlled and sustained rate. The SAFE can be employed as a standalone film or coated onto an inert solid surface such as sand particles and mud-pot to create a household disinfection system. The system can provide microbial-safe water at ≈5-8 paise/L and is suitable in rural areas and urban slums where access to treated water is limited. The low mass, higher nanoparticle loading capacity, long service life, and ease of carrying make the SAFE more resource-efficient and suitable for emergencies and other personal uses.
