    One thing I feel needs mentioned as far as the darkling beetles as feeders. Be weary of their exoskeleton hurting your gecko. I used to let my gecko eat them from time to time, and he loved chasing them. I stopped after he got a piece of shell lodged in his gums that had to be removed. I don't know how many other people have had issues with this but that's my own personal experience. Anyway, love the video as usual!

    could you do a video on how to set up your cricket and mealworm habitat? I saw on a video that you can put the meal worms in the fridge and they will like go into a sleep for a bit but idk if that’s true so a video showing how to set up and store ur cricket/mealworm farm would be great!
    Also how many different bugs should you feed your gecko? If I lm able to get one I’m planing on feeding it crickets and mealworms but idk if my gecko would need more variety.

    • @nightinggale6470

      Live crickets, roaches, silkworms, and black soldier fly larvae can be fed regularly. Mealworms, super worms, and hornworms can be fed occasionally. The more variety in their diet, the better.
      For crickets, all you need is a decent sized container (with air holes and a secure lid), egg cartons, and veggies.

      I think they'll last longer if they have a bit more room. I used to keep mealworms in the same tub they came in, but I've just found they do better with a little extra room.

    • @petrescuework-difficultcas6581
      @petrescuework-difficultcas6581 5 лет назад

      I found that especially crickets are quite difficult to take out of these small containers without some of them escaping. And I also found that fresh food goes moldy quicker in these small containers, probably because the ventilation isn't that great.
      I would recommend getting a "proper" set up once, then you're good to go. It's like a one-time-investment and it makes your life much easier.

    Hi Rebecca! Tip on Silkworms! I agree that they are RIDICULOUSLY expensive live. So I found an alternative. ProBugs! ProBugs is a company that sells dub roaches, silkworms, grasshoppers, locusts, etc. They are not alive, but not freeze dried. They are freshly preserved! My geckos (Kota and Kalani) absolutely love them! They are large, so I normally cut them in half, but they will eat them even though they are not alive! And this is also useful in case some bugs are illegal that you want, as these aren't illegal to have preserved :) -Jordyn

      Karen B. A cleanup crew is a mixture of isopods and springtails that’s eat decomposing food and poop. There isn’t really a need to control the population because the more there are, the richer the soil will be and the less poop there will be.

    • @petrescuework-difficultcas6581
      @petrescuework-difficultcas6581 5 лет назад

      @@kendall4060 And as it is an enclosed setup, the amount of food for them is usually limited (if you don't feed them on top).
      So if you fear of them getting overpopulated, just stop feeding them additionally that much. Every population in a enclosed setup will then regulate the population by itself after the amount of food there is provided.
      It's the same as with dove populations in different countries. We have doves called "city doves" here. They live in the pedestrian areas and feed of dropped food, bread crumbs, fast food that was dropped on the floor, etc. If you walk through our cities, there are doves everywhere. It is strictly forbidden to feed them. And sure, this may sound cruel, because if you don't feed them, they might not be able to get their babies to grow up. But feeding them will only increase the population and support their in general unhealthy and miserable lives. So the best you can do (and what you have to do by law) is to avoid dropping food for them. That way their population regulates itself so they can sustain themselves.

    (Not so) Quick question. We get mealworms from a local pet store, not big brand name but a big store, at a quantity of 250, and we take out 20 or so to gutload and then feed our leapord gekco. The store told us to refrigerate the ones we aren't using and take them out 24 hours in advance, but most of them seem to die off before we get to "use" them. Is there any better thing we can do to keep them alive for longer?

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 лет назад

      You could leave them at room temperature but then they’d turn into beetles. You could breed them to get free feeders. Although mealworms are not a healthy staple diet. Feed mainly live crickets or Dubia roaches.

    I just bought a leopard gecko and im feeding her tiny crickets but I do have an issue: it's very difficult for the gecko to hunt them down and here's why: I'm using paper towel as a substrate and that's white, I dust the insects with calcium and.... they become white as well so she can't really see them... I son't want to use twisers to feed her because she just moved in and I don't want to stress her too much. any suggestions?

    Silkworm store UK
    Buzzard reptile UK
    dubia Paul
    And sometimes eBay I get the silkworms from these sites for my chameleon all the time hope this helps😁

    With a lamp do you also need a heat mat or just a lamp?
    Also do you only need UVB or do you also need a heat lamp for night? Please tell me what to use for night time if I don’t keep UVB on 24/7 because I’m getting my Leo soon and I’m confused.

    • @reptitan5498
      @reptitan5498 5 лет назад +1

      Heat mats are way better than lamps. A lamp should only be used really as a way to warm the air temp a bit if needed. No night lamps unless the temperature is too cold use a lamp that doesn't emitt light. The only lamp I reccommed you use is the deep heat projector which is a bit expensive. Always use a thermostat with any heating device. If you have any questions please ask. ☺

    • @reptitan5498
      @reptitan5498 5 лет назад

      Basically you heat mat should be your primary heat source, set to 90 degrees with a thermostat. A heat lamp should be a secondary heat to be used as needed.

      Lickapotato 123 try around two weeks when it’s fully used to its new home and it’s used to seeing you (like when it figures out its schedule for feeding and figures out your feeding them) or (this personally worked for me) put your hand in the tank each day for a few minutes and wait to see if your gecko walks onto it, that’s how you know there used to you and are ok with being held.

      @@kendall4060 If she doesn't have any other pets, there is no need to quarantine a pet.
      Sure, you have to watch it closely if it is sick, but a quarantine includes keeping the pet in a separate room, washing/desinfecting your hands after every contact, avoiding to swap out interior material like bowls or hides with other enclosures, etc. And if there's only one pet, she doesn't have to worry about contaminating other pets. (Though I still recommend washing your hands after every contact with your reptile. Not just in the beginning, but always)

      Fiona Shepley thanks worms may be the best but I’ll try the roaches too

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 5 лет назад

      Ghazt Ghazt when it comes to worms, most of them (mealworms, superworms, waxworms, and hornworms) can’t be their main diet and can only be used as variety or treats. Silkworms and black soldier fly larvae (aka Phoenix worms or calciworms) are very nutritious and make great staples but unfortunately they aren’t very convenient. Not very easily available, difficult to breed, silkworms only eat mulberry leaves and are difficult to keep long term, etc.
      Just some things to keep in mind.
      Roaches are a great staple and don’t really have any cons
