Britain’s shoplifting epidemic: Inside a supermarket under siege by thieves | Times Reports

- “Keep an eye on this one,” says Amelia, the unflappable manager of a busy Bristol Co-op store, from her office in the basement. She has spotted a man on CCTV dump his bicycle haphazardly on the pavement and walk into the store with a large backpack, grab a basket and head straight for the chilled aisle.
These are all tell-tale signs that he could be a shoplifter.
Within seconds, he has stuffed 14 packs of £3.30 own-brand cheddar into his rucksack. The more expensive £5.25 Cathedral City-branded cheddar is encased in locked plastic casing, which he avoids.
Zipping up his rucksack, he begins piling all types of meat into the basket - six packets of honey roast ham, six packets of salami, five packets of topside roast beef, two packets of bacon strips, pork sausages, spicy chicken wings and a tub of Anchor butter.
Fridges are left open, packaging is upturned, shelves are stripped bare. Customers are shopping in the same aisle at the time, seemingly oblivious. The Sunday Times had spent fewer than three hours in the store before this happened, after being invited to witness the US-style looting that some supermarkets are facing on a daily basis.
Shop theft nationally has risen by 27 per cent in the past year, according to the British Retail Consortium. Historically, retailers have refused to talk about shoplifting for fear it will scare off customers. However, John Lewis, Tesco and Asda have all joined Co-op in speaking out in recent weeks.

This is part of the wider decline of society; I fear it will only get worse, especially as the politicians seemingly couldn't care less! What a situation!
Why are they still blurring their faces?
@@hartleyhare99Ah yes, gotta defend criminals.
The West glorifies any kind of degeneracy or crime
They are children. Vulnerable. Ethnic minority. They self identify as a shoplifter. How dare you oppress their expression of their lived experience. Tut tut...
Exactly. If they are that bold to steal, stop blurring
Security should have an XL Bully at the door to deter trouble makers.
Bc of this video, there WILL be more shoplifting.
Thanking you on behalf of all shoplifters.
Taser them, lock them in a secure room, close the store until the Police arrive and arrest
unfortunately that would be illegal
This is what happens when you have a weak, cowardly police force who like to apply the law selectively and would rather spend time pursuing people for using the wrong pronouns on social media than catching real criminals.
Shopkeepers should shout the N word at the thieves. The police would be there in seconds although it would be to arrest the shopkeepers not poor thieves.
So true....
You seem to think shoplifters are exclusively one race,,,but that definitely isnt the case...many of them look like you and your family.
the elderly, believe it or not also shoplift more than you think.
@@CPFCPlumberhave you never seen a shoplifter who looks like you? because most of the shoplifters I've seen where I live look like you and your family members.
Can't expect the police to do anything about this. They have thought criminals to go after.
Not the thought criminals 😂
Police is busy to bully random pensioner who refuse a smart meter to be installed at the property
What you need to do is make sure that you try to stop them. Try grab hold of the goods. Try get in front of them and put your arm out to so they come into contact with you. This ensures that the charge is robbery and not shoplifting. They do not have to cause harm. It’s about contact and taking by force.
Stop using shoplifting. I had someone come into a place I used to work in that shoplifted all the time. He got that brazen he literally would walk out the store goods in hand. All police would do is send to court but we all know shoplifters get fined and that’s it. Half the time it’s thrown out. However one kind police officer mentioned about force. So I grabbed the bottle and he grabbed it back. I let him take it. It then became robbery and he got sentenced.
You don’t have to try be a hero. Just make sure there’s contact or a threat towards you and it’s robbery. Use the words robbery when you phone the police. If the police then say it’s shoplifting correct them. They just don’t want to deal with it being robbery for such low value goods. However the courts do not take the value into consideration as to weather it’s robbery or not.
I'm sorry but this is absolutely nonsense what you are saying. Why should members of staff a lot of them women have to do this for what £11 an hour?
Protecting Mr Co op's property while the higher ups are chilling safely making millions. It is not there job to stop shoplifting, there should be better procautions in place. Especially for £11 an hour, peanuts to put your life on the line. Pay security guards danger money of £40-£50 an hour then it might might make sense. My advice to any staff is to leave it, it is not your job, especially for £11 an hour.
Don"t forget when they have a knife.
Fat cats at the top ripping us off for food.......why should we put our selfs in harms way, .. they don't.
Remember to sue Mickey if we do exactly what he said and got stabbed.
Shut up ya sausage
Risk of being stabbed, abused and on constant edge. All for £26,000 a year..
If you’re not gonna do your job in gaurding the store then why should someone pay u to stand around and look pretty?
Lily Savage: "We were poor but we were shoplifters" 😂
A bit of vigilante action needed.
Well the courts are doing nothing
theft should be taken seriously & courts should ban thieves from ALL SHOPS, tell them shop online!
you think this is a deterrent? thieves don't care about being banned.. it would also be impossible to enforce anyway
The dole busters aren’t satisfied with food banks, they want a bit more variety
If they steal less than£200 then they get away with it. What a joke. Its up to the shops to provide staff protection, maybe more barriers around the till, alarms etc.
You can't even have a security guard in store
I work for one of the big supermarkets. Our store looses probably 1k a week. Some are small amounts where people walk off from the awful self-service tills, and then we have known individuals who literally walk in, grab a trolley, fill it up, and then are just walking out. We as employees are told without any hesitation we will be sacked should we approach anyone shoplifting. The police are not interested one little bit. A few months ago one of our regular shoplifters walked out with a trolley full of chocolate bars and boxes of chocolates and literally ran past a police car coming into our carpark. I told the officer as he got out of the car but his response was 'I'm on my break call 101'. Brilliant. These shoplifters have all the power and almost the law is on their side.
Why can't staff be trained on tasers? Seriously.
If you toughen up our judicial system, then these rodents will stop this wanton , blatant theft, the sentences we have for this type of crime, is pathetic,
I see my local co op getting robbed differently everyday and the security they have is an absolute joke the staff at Co op don’t even bother stopping them and it makes me mad because I pay for my food while others rob it and get away with it tighten up security give them a baseball bat or a weapon what’s the point of havin security if they are not gonna secure the place get with it it’s an absolute joke why pay someone to stand at the door they should be stopping the thieves at any cost the security at Asda are tackling the thieves they are making sure no one gets away with stealing and I respect them guys out there who actually do there security job
Those shoplifters look a lot like the people who came across the channel on boats
it will probably come to the point where you have to book a slot online to visit a shop and have your ID confirmed before you enter the premises.
Amazon are already trialling a decent system. barrier entry and no entry without scanning your account, it then auto charges you on exit. need to be some proper barriers though not something you can hop over. as we slowly move more and more to cashless transactions and improved AI you will no doubt see more shops switch to similar methods
Diversity is our strength they said
You'd never see those security measures in Southeast or East Asia. That's a sign of a messed up society when it gets to that.
it's sad when you think how much money businesses have to invest in safety, and it would be enough to change the law to a one-way out ticket

Well done for promoting yourself as week to more predators
And as for the co op the manager says on this video in the evening we had a guard in place 1 at night to confront 3 4 5 thieves alone most Co ops don't have any
I'm sure the 6 hrs community service will put them off 😂😂😂
This is what austerity has done. Public services have collapsed.
This has nothing to do with austerity.
As poverty increases, so does shoplifting.
More police? Civil liberty groups will be quick to critice and oppose bobbies on the beat.
Well to be honest them tags they have on the high value bottles can easily be detagged it’s easy for shoplifters there need something more better
Get private security. Now. Get firm who doesn't give a f@#k who or how they stop this situation.
Notice that their all migrants? Getting the picture yet?
Yeh send all the Romanian and polish home solved
there's just as many white UK residents stealing, in fact where i am its mostly white...
Shoplifting ? Six month 's boot camp .
Imported from the states.
Policez too busy reading book .............🤣🤣🤣🤣
And Rodger Waters says yes this is what it's all about
Absolutely love it, when the west criticise islam which speaks about the thiefs hand removed as a deterrant is ridiculed, now look at ur problems, in dubai our jewellery shops are open even when the staff go to pray, amazing how islam has all the answers
You have the tory government to blame for the police mess. These big stores are covered by insurance
Good job at blurring it out.. 0:40
Products of society .
Be a time soon when all shoplifters will have to scan their receipts to proove they paid for their items before they leave the store,There also be loads more Police and Security guards about,Loads more CCTV Cameras installed every where,Last time I done this was about 25 years ago,Back in the days when it was more easy,Still got found out in the end,I used to do it many years ago,Stealing out of one shop to the next,I keept well clear of trouble for a long time now,Must be doing something right,Ive no longer got a criminal record,I turned my life around ages ago,Cant be doing with being back to the Police Station again
The coop fails its staff and leaves them open to risk they donr repect the guards either. They absolutely useless company
its a poor country , we don't have any theft in Dubai . you people are wild ,
they are filling the void, free stuff, open and available for the taking.
crime has been decriminalized.
or, without rule of law, a natural process when there is no limits on crime
lucky the co-op is the most expensive shop so the people purchasing the items is supporting the lost profits
These are dark times
You know, and I know, that these offenders are immigrants. I'll bet my house they are.
0:35 welcome to College Green Co-op, fail media, you forgot to blur the one on the right
Jobless homeless and now looting very bad situation country will collapse
I identify all groceries are free
tory britain .. nothing is a crime unless you upset a minoritys feelings
Black men only?
no lol
Most of shoplifters are black
Who would notice that.

I don't know who is more depressing this coop lady or the theifs! But overall I'd be on the people getting free stuff sides as coop is a rip off and it says in the Bible if you are unable to get food it is ok to steal. Should not live in a society that food is so expensive anyway
Britain should never have declared war on Germany in 1939
It'll be remembered as the biggest error in world history since Europe then invited in Muhammed to make himself comfortable and grape their daughters
If you had a knife pulled on to the manager why didn't you resign and look for a better job instead carrying working there 🤔
@@Wherethereisnodarkness true

Stop increasing prices on items then we won’t steal
co-operative group Co-op has reported profit before tax of £247m in fiscal 2022 (FY22),
an increase of £190m from £57m in fiscal 2021 (FY21). The company's revenue rose by £0.3bn to £11.5bn in FY22 against £11.2bn in the prior fiscal,
despite being affected by the divestiture of the petrol forecourt business. water off a ducks back
so its ok to steal as long as they are successful? so I can go steal stuff as long as its from a wealthy household? this isn't just a coop problem all retail including the small independents see this kind of crime and why should the staff have to deal with scum on an ever increasing basis? you also must enjoy paying higher prices to cover company losses and increasing insurance costs
@@lemonzest191 Clearly thats not what i said but we are in a cost of living crisis and guess who profited the most? not you or i, desperate times call for desperate measures its bound to happen is all im saying and company insurance would cover the theft...not your funeral if you got stabbed by a robber defending ur co op lol
buahahhaha, let more refugees in
it's sad when you think how much money businesses have to invest in safety, and it would be enough to change the law to a one-way out ticket
its even sadder when you realise not only do these thieves take from the system through benefits but also you pay higher prices to cover their theft! so the public are being robbed blind by them.
