No band now or in the rest of history sounds anything like The Cure. Robert Smith is a genius! Welcome to the journey. They have been with me since I was 14 and I’m 55 now. This and Head on the Door are my two favorites. Hope you do that one too. ✌️❤️

Nice reaction. Like someone else said, nice to at least imagine hearing it for the first time again. 'I feel like I'm at my own funeral' is a great phrase. Sums up the sad indulgence that the album is imbued with, not in a bad way, in a magnificent way

When you teared up at the beginning of Closedown, that’s exactly how I felt when I got hit by the guitars on Plainsong for the first time. I started crying just because of how beautiful it sounded.
So glad you got to record your reaction to this album! Disintegration is my favourite album ever. Even though I think many other works rank higher than it, musically speaking, it’s still on my personal highest spot ever since I first listened to it.
The first song I’ve heard was Pictures of You, and I got me mesmerised. I knew of The Cure and a few of their most popular songs, but when I listened to Pictures of You it definitely sounded like something different… something special. It is indeed a perfect song, and seeing them playing it live a year ago in São Paulo was an otherworldly experience. I cried throughout the entire evening. The best night of my life.
    On to some recommendations now:
If you want more albums with this dreamy vibe around them, give Cocteau Twins a go, if you haven’t already! Maybe go for “Treasure” (one of Robert Smith’s favourites actually, he listened to this record on his wedding day!) or “Heaven or Las Vegas” (their magnum opus).
Also, not quite similar to Disintegration, but an interesting story links them: “Low” by David Bowie was a huge inspiration for Robert Smith. Bowie was his idol, and he dropped “Low” when he was 30, so Smith got really invested in also creating his own masterpiece before he turned 30 himself… well, the end result is what you listened to in this video. :)
And “Low” is, indeed, a masterpiece. One of Bowie’s finest works to date, co-created with Brian Eno. The side-B of that record is just very atmospheric instrumental tracks, brilliantly composed.
And, talking about collabs with Brian Eno: “Remain in Light” by the Talking Heads is another masterpiece! Definitely give it a chance. :)
One last fun fact: the bright yet somber guitar tones you hear throughout Disintegration comes from Rober Smith using a Fender Bass VI instead of a regular guitar! That’s why it’s so interestingly distinct.

Thank you for sharing your experiences listening to Disintegration! I've been going back and listening to some of those songs and I really do love them.
Cocteau Twins I've always meant to give them a proper listen but haven't had the chance yet, so thanks for the reminder I'll check them out! David Bowie as well, I feel like he's got such a huge discography and I've heard so little of it. Talking Heads I've heard so little of as well so thanks for that. I have to start making a list now.

Great reaction, so glad to witness the birth of another Curehead and welcome to the cult of Robert Smith worshippers 🎉 :-))
Disintegration is a flawless album in my book and I wouldn’t have wanted to miss a single second. Have you ever seen the South Park episode "Mecha-Streisand" in which Kyle Broflovski called it "the best album ever"?
Robert Smith actually does his own voice. It’s brilliant. I know this record has changes many lives and after decades it still evokes the same feelings in me as it did back in the day. If you love this album you have to listen to Entreat (the first edition) . It’s an 8 track live album (which I’m not usually fond of) but the versions of these songs on that one are insane. The title track Disintegration is sped up and much more agressive and Robert makes the most impressive howl in his career as he sings Prayers For Raaaaaaaaaiiiiiiinnn for what seems to go on forever. Shivers down my spine. Definately a go to next, for this band is the best live band I have ever seen. Here it is (don’t go for the new version, because the mix is by far not as good ;-)).
Ps. Homesick is indeed about Robert’s former (mainly) alcohol addiction…
Ps2. The Extended versions of Fascination Street and Lovesong are even better! Mixed Up might be a nice reaction follow up album too as it’s often forgotten and it shows the extreme diversity of what this band is capable of.
Ps3. "Lullaby" is based on a recurring nightmare Robert Smith had as a child where he was eaten by a giant spider; Smith says the song is about the fear of sleep.

The Cure's guitarwork has always been underrated. A lot of "breathing," a lot of emotive phrasing and space between notes.
Most people interpret Lullaby as either a metaphor for drug addiction or SA (both make sense if you read the lyrics and think about it for a minute). Robert Smith said it's just about a dream he had though.

Hear me out before ya judge me. Re-listen to the song Lullaby, but imagine the singer is the mind of a child, laying fearfully in bed, waiting for their abuser (the Spider Man). Horrifying? Yes. but it's creepily accurate when put into that context. What it's really about I certainly don't know, but its always given me the abuse vibe.

Lullaby is about a story told to Robert Smiths in his youth by his uncle (I think) with the "spiderman" in it. Nothing to do with the superhero although everyone I see reacting to disintegration gets tripped up about it. It's unfortunate that they both are named the same. When I first listened to the song conceptually it being the superhero never made sense, I had already primed myself with other songs, so I was more exposed to their lyrical style, and I thought it was a symbol for something else. Also, Fascination Street is about drugs mostly. I also thought similarly to you when I first listened to it.
also, I suggest listening to either
Tinderbox by Siouxsie and the Banshees
Violator by Depeche Mode (although black celebration and music for the masses are good choices too)
Bloodflowers by The Cure (if you want to keep the dreary cure album streak going. Although you might not like it as much, it's a bit dated but carries an equally heavy mood and I actually quite like the production despite criticism)
Script of the Bridge by the Chameleons (a bit of a lower key album but it also has a similar atmospheric feel to disintegration although different)

You have no choice, you must react to their absolut masterpiece "Pornography" (1982), one of the darkest album ever recorded and one od the first goth rock album, at this time, Robert SMith was 23, and thinking The Cure was over, he was highly on drugs (a lot of LSD), deseperate and wants to say fuck off to the music industry, when Disintegration was sad but bright, Pornoghaphy is a real descent in Hell !
