    A absolute classic!! When I was younger I never cared for westerns and I couldn't understand how my dad would watch them especially EASTWOOD classic's but now I love them and this is one I really want and people have found several of his westerns at dollar tree stores! I never get lucky but I rarely get out due to my handicap but I definitely need more Eastwood classic's.

    Heath, Thank You very much for the appreciation for this wonderful film! My dad introduced me to the The Dollars Trilogy when I was young. So for me it was The Beatles, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly and baseball. A lot of the films greatness comes from Ennio Morricone who is still my favorite film composer. The soundtrack still gives me chills. And I agree with you about the grain. The grain IS the film. Leave it alone. I have this on preorder and hopefully the other two will be on the way for a 4K treatment in the future.

      @darrenblizzard3851 3 года назад

      @@CerealAtMidnight despite the controversy around these colour gradings for all three Dollars films these were done based on what the original visions for these films were. I read that Cineteca di Bologna consulted cinematographer Tonino Delli Colli some years back before he passed away and also used old Italian Technicolor prints as a reference. I Makes sense.... You wouldn't just make up your own colour timings for such a beloved movie without doing your due diligence!

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 года назад +1

      I’ve heard this too. Ultimately it’s why I steered clear of the conversation, because those who want to hate it will hate it and those who love the movie will buy it anyway. There’s so much bickering about intended color timing, but we all know it’s this or nothing. Nobody else is going to be releasing the film, and it’s notable that the studio licensed the film out instead of releasing it themselves. Anybody who would avoid this film because of something they heard in a review about color timing was probably never going to buy it anyway. I wanted to focus as much as possible on the film itself, which has never EVER looked better. Probably not even on opening day in 1967-1968.

    • @darrenblizzard3851
      @darrenblizzard3851 3 года назад

      @@CerealAtMidnight agreed. Too much of an echo chamber mentality online about too many things without actual fact checking. As far as I am concerned if the studio responsible for the colour grading and other aspects of the restoration have consulted the actual cinematographer and checked original Italian prints then that's good enough for me to trust that what I see is trying to preserve the original vision as closely as possible. Any one else's personal OPINION is irrelevant to the directors and cinematographers vision! I for one am super excited about this release and can't wait to see it! Just have to wait a bit longer for it to make its way down under but will be worth the wait!

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 года назад +3

      As it turns out, I reached out to Kino for clarification and they told me an additional 30 hours of color correction has been done to this 4K transfer since the previous release, so now the question becomes "do the people who complained about the previous color timing accept the new adjustments to bring it more in line with how people expect it to look, or do they keep complaining?"

    hopefully electronics manufacturers and movie theaters will come to an agreement and make 8k a theater exclusive file size, because as a retail format 8k is just impractical. Most people can't own a tv large enough for 8k to make a difference.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 года назад +1

      Exactly! The idea of us all watching 8K home entertainment seems very unpractical. And when most movies are still lacking a solid 2K scan, it's the idea of 8K as a home media format doesn't seem likely. HD snobs already complain about how many dated transfers there are that the studios have no plans to re-scan. Yes, people are working on 8K TVs, but will the public adopt those as any sort of standard over the next few years? I can't imagine so, and even if they do, there's not going to be much 8K content to watch on those televisions. Possibly sports, but films? Streaming? I just can't see it any time soon, maybe ever.

    I think every Western review should begin like that. Where is Westerns spotlight part 2?!?! While I do love The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, to me Leone's masterpiece is Once Upon a Time in the West, a film that was somehow eclipsed by its more popular/famous brother. I suppose you've seen it, Heath? And about the grain... i love grain, I'm a grain head. I love everything that brings out the physicality and tactile presence of film.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  3 года назад

      Man, I think I recommended Once Upon a Time in the West in Western Spotlight Vol. 1! The main reason I did (besides the fact that it's fantastic) is that it's often eclipsed by the Dollars trilogy in terms of cultural awareness. Good, Bad, and Ugly is probably more "pop" than OUaTitW (it's almost a comic book movie), which makes it more approachable, but the latter movie is a more complete, singular story and feels more...mature? If we ever get that on 4K and I get to do a full review, I'll be praising it like crazy.
      Western Spotlight #2 coming in 2026! Just kidding. I've got most of the movies in a stack just waiting to be discussed. Just gotta carve out the time to film it without bumping something from the schedule. I think before that video happens, there will be a spotlight on a certain war hero named Mr. Murphy who starred in quite a few westerns.

They did the full Dollars Trilogy over the course of a day. An amazing experience. And even though The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is the last and longest of the trilogy it never dragged, even after the previous two films. Also I noticed, watching on the big screen, that when they Bridge blows up there's a piece of what looks like real stone that bounces damn close to the main cast. Superb film.

    I am excited about this movies 4K release and have it pre-ordered on Amazon. May be my number 1 western of all time. Some people don't like spaghetti westerns and I get that. They just don't get how these movies were made. Sergio Leoni films are like an opera with their long dramatic pre gunfight scenes that seem to go on forever such as the end gunfight in this movie. Spaghetti westerns changed how all western movies are made. They revived what was becoming a dying cinema genre. For some reason the Italians fell in love with western movies as the French fell in love with Jerry Lewis comedies and I am glad that they made westerns in their own inimitable style and yes Sergio Leoni and Ennio Morricone were at the top of their game with this one and went on to make others where they were continuing to be at the top of their game with Once Upon A Time In The West and A Fistful Of Dynamite which are masterpieces in their own right.

    "The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly" is fine for those who live in the USA. For those who live in the UK and elsewhere, importation of the disc set is pricey. Also, here in the UK, many people are unable to play the extended Blu-Ray version! Both discs ought to have been 4K. For some reason a fair number of films are USA release only. This hardly helps physical format.

    With the MGM Blu Ray, the 4K-level restoration made the *picture quality itself* look fantastic, BUT then they put ugly tints/filters all over it that made the colors look absolutely hideous :( Kino (with their previous Blu Ray) seemed like they just took that same transfer and tried to "fix" the colors, but it just ended up looking desaturated/washed out. That is why I was excited about the announcement of this 4K, maybe we would FINALLY get the colors ACTUALLY fixed and not looking ugly! Before I buy this 4K though, I am going to wait until I am able to see proper screenshot comparisons with previous Blu Rays so I can compare and get an idea of what the color on the 4K looks. The colors on the Mad Max and Spaceballs 4K from Kino seemed to look good though, so I have hope that the colors will be better and actually fixed this time.

I have two 4K set-ups (a TCL and an LG), and they are not the same. The LG doesn't look nearly as good as the TCL. It's one of the reasons I try not to get too bogged down in the technical aspects and focus more on the movie itself when I do these reviews. If I say something looks great, someone will say "no it doesn't." And if I say it should look better, someone says "it looks great!" There may be some crushed blacks on the 4K, but I've seen some people also say it has milky blacks. Who knows! :)

For $30 I'd sure like it if some effort was made to make the discs look presentable, rather than just slapping the title and KL on them with a plain background and have that be it. Same goes for the menu which is just a static image and text, which is a far cry from the interactive nature DVD's used to once have.

    • @CerealAtMidnight

      I think the other two ever hitting 4K will depend on how well The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly sells. 4Ks are expensive to author and release, so the fandom really needs to show up for these if we want the other two. This is a release Kino had been planning a couple of years ago, but when their first 4K release (Hannibal) didn’t meet expectations, it delayed/postponed everything else. As I like to say, we vote with our wallets. Companies like Kino take a financial risk with releases like this, so it’s up to us to buy them, which opens the door for more in the future.

    Great intro to this vid, very entertaining and nice way to highlight your love and passion for this film. Firstly yes, I'm upgrading. I have KLs previous releases of the Dollars trilogy but have already pre-orderd this 4k upgrade as it's one of my favourite films of all time and I understand your passionate praising of this film. Secondly I just don't get people who hate film grain and are happy to see something filmic DNRed to death 😳 to remove grain even if it's going to leave a waxy look. That is the devil's work. It's a crime against cinema. If you like film then you like film and should appreciate the historical aspects that come with it. Why would you only limit yourself to watching HD Blu Ray Ray digitally shot modern films only or just 4k even? Seems bizarre to me and I can't grasp it. That's like saying let's get rid of Tolkien's written copies of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings because we can watch it on telly and don't need to read it. Or at least what I mean is it's the same level of cultural and artistic vandalism. I don't get it but anyway, I know there are people out there with this viewpoint but for me personally it's a staggering viewpoint and beyond comprehension. Great vid and can't wait to get my copy and I haven't actually watched it for a while so will be a good excuse to revisit it. I wonder if KL will release 4k versions of A Fistful of Dollars and For A Few Dollars More? As much as I love TGTBATU I actually prefer For A Few Dollars More so would love to see it get a native 4k release. Cheers!

      @@CerealAtMidnight There's still some yellow there that just wasn't present in older releases. Personally, I think this new release looks awful and I very much doubt this is the intended or even close to the original look. Movies just didn't use these ghastly uniformed color schemes back in the day, this is a modern day trend that is fact so no fan boy mentality flourishing out there on the Internet can convince me otherwise, I don't really care what the masses say because (A) these people must be colorblind or (B) they don't really give a damn. Most movie critics today, are basically fan boys themselves with no real knowledge of film history. I'm also weary of the talk of filmmakers themselves getting involved - only for this to be what they end up with; a downgrade, essentially a colorization of color movies how twisted can it get.
      You can sometimes get lost in trends and back-patting if you're in this industry, look at Scorsese's last few decades to name one there's dozens of famous directors all of a sudden doing things you'd never see them ok years before. I agree with the OP here on 4K grading in general, there's something off about it and I really have no doubt it's done so to give these movies a 'acceptable' look more in line with current movies. They really do this to certain big cult hits, believe it or not if the title's cool or trendy enough. Big mistake, isn't it enough that current stuff is butt ugly why mess with the classics that's where I get off the boat.

    My my., what an awful review. We get it, it’s a masterpiece of a film which needs no explanation. Instead of gushing over it, how about you mention the complete lack of HDR on this UHD disc or the fact that the release is merely a quick and dirty fix from what KL had available. Neither this or the Blu-Ray are particularly fantastic and imo this classic film needs a full restoration with HDR by talented professionals. It’s an average UHD release at best.

    • @CerealAtMidnight

      The lack of HDR doesn't matter. HDR is a revisionist tool that sometimes makes things look better but just as often makes them look worse. The correction to the previous color timing is appreciated. This is the best the movie has ever looked on home media. But look, I get it, anything you don't agree with is awful. We seek out voices of agreement, not passion. Plus, negativity seeks to drown out positivity. "This person likes this thing and I don't, so I'm going to let them know how wrong they are because my opinion is right and theirs is wrong." The condescension is just a smug cherry on top.
