the fact that you have a mind of your own, stand on your own 2 feet , have lived your way into good thinking, have the ability to see the whole picture, arent afraid to stand and tell the world what you believe in is GREAT

I don't believe in free will because I believe the block universe is an implication of Einstein's special relativity.
Thanks for the video (and others).

I do not have something called "free will" because nothing else does.

That’s the interesting thing, it’s a lot more easy to say that other things don’t have free will. It seems that animals (including humans) is what people find difficult

have a sense that I think once you really struggled with an addiction, mental Illness and intrusive thoughts. The absence of free will is obvious.

Definitely. I think the fact we increasingly understand how those mental health issues work implies an increasing application of causality to the mind as well.

@@ethanbensonI commented before finishing the video, I’m definitely a hard incompatibilism. Have a sense that I think neuroscience also sheds a bright light on the subject of free will. A more subjective opinion oriented perspective is it’s a tremendously important subject, for a multitude of reasons. To me the belief in free will is the single driving force of human suffering for millennials.
My reasons for such a stance are mostly caused by Robert Sapolsky book “Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will”
Blame and punishment, as well as praise and reward should not be seen as a deserved. But as nothing more than an instrumental tool that is used when necessary.
In the realm of crime: Blame and punishment should only be used when it will encourage better future behavior. Ie. individuals that suffer from antisocial personality disorder, those individuals are most likely to respond to consequences. Of course there are other examples. Generally speaking the quarantine model is more effective. Similar to how Scandinavian countries handle crime, have a sense I personally think punishment mostly reinforces and causes crime.
In the realm of every other aspect of life: The belief in free will completely determines every aspect of any given individuals life. What schooling is received, what jobs are received, what healthcare treatment is received…ect. When in reality it’s the spectrum of luck.
Ie. The belief in free will, makes someone suffering from a mental illness, far less likely to seek treatment. Have a sense I think this because the belief is grounded in the idea of one’s willpower, so generally it will vastly delay or completely hinder one’s chances of a as “healthy” as “can” be mentality and a treatment that works.
There’s also many other reasons if you’re interested in a bit of back and forth. Would also have a sense of appreciation to hear your thoughts as well.

At 11 minutes you talk about quantum theory but illustrate it with Newtons law of gravity and Einsteins formula for mass and energy equivalence.

It’s just a stock image from powerpoint, it has no bearing on the point made 🤷‍♂️

I do not believe that we have free will. Our practices of punishing others rest on the assumption that people could have done otherwise than they did. I think we can discard that assumption and create replacement practices based on strict liability rather than moral responsibility. We defend ourselves against sources of harm (such as hurricanes) even though we don't think that storms can help doing what they do. If a source of harm is another person, we can try to protect ourselves without blaming the person for being as they are or doing as they do.

That’s s really interesting point. I know there’s a lot of discussion on that, I’ll have to look into it further

Do you really think I just sit at home all day and this is all I do?
