Wondering what happened to the boat? I would love to see the final result, what ever it might be. Great instructional video, and learning from mistakes is equally important as learning from successes. I hope you post soon!
It's satisfying to watch the brush smooth out the roller and then watch the brush streaks slowly fade away. I guess you could say I enjoy watching paint dry.
The paint techniques keep clear how better it bacome when you pass the brush very soft. I could see the quality improvement in the window reflections. Great job.
Nice...nice...nice! You described the process perfectly. I have modified this process over the years. I have found most of the specialty boat paints flash off too quick even with brushing thinner. I have gone back to traditional oil based paints and I do my painting in 50 degree weather. In fact, I don't even tip off with a brush anymore. The cool temperature allows the roller bubbles and stipple to pop and flatten out just by gravity. You can even get away with cheap rustoleum, but there are no UV inhibitors. However, I beat up my boats so much they get another coat every other year anyway so no big deal to me. Just my two cents. Excellent, excellent job! I love the swoop profile of your paint job. Gonna look awesome on the river!
Thanks for the tips and I’m glad I wasn’t off base! I’m way behind on getting these videos out. I’ve actually already flipped the boat over and have had it on the water and it does look really nice
Thanks for video. By late spring i am going to have to paint a 23 foot boat. As it will be my first time using marine specific products you have given enough tips so i can practise first and (possibly) get it right.
I've had a love hate relationship with multi-colors while painting on aircraft. I;ve found that 3/4" or 1/2" vinyl tape really good for the initial masking of a design. It stretches around shapes nicely. Nice work and thanks for sharing.
Really enjoying the build - been watching from the start and appreciate the time and dedication you have put into the build while helping people realize mistakes happen, gotta role with em and know it's still possible to create a real work of art
I found on my boat that a month after paint I was able to sand the paint and polish it. That way, all the brush strokes disappeared. Nice job and thanks for the video!
Good work! Patience is your friend when rolling and tipping (sort of), there is a fine line between too fast and too slow. It is also a totally different experience when you use a high quality poly paint, makes the job look much better than other “high quality” paints.
Nailed it man! Great solution to the epoxy drip problem. The process was well thought out, ensuring you had enough hands on deck (pun intended) to do so this time. Its probably not what you originally wanted, but I hope you’re satisfied with the design change. Looking forward to the rest of the project!
May I suggest that you add a thin white line, 1/8 thick, parallell to the red but 1/4 in to the blue? Try with a thin masking tape to get a visual. I think you’d like it, though I really can’t be sure.
@@robertwood4073 when you get the pics, please share them with us as "Viewer's projects". It would be a great addition and a great way to help support your viewers. Thanks.
What a great recovery from what looked like a mistake! I don’t know if you originally planned to put any paint on it but I personally think the boat looks better with the mix of wood grain and the colors that it would have with just wood. Looking forward to seeing what comes next. Thanks, DC
Great save! Funnily enough when I watched your previous “disaster” video, my first thought was to paint something over it. But I think your final design is nicer than anything I would have come up with! :)
Hi, can you please show a completed video of the boat??? After watching every episode I feel disappointed that I haven’t seen the finished item Ha Ha. You have done an incredible job, congrats! Cheers,Sean
Just found your channel and watched the whole series on the boat. Are there any updates since the last video? Was hoping to see the rest of the project
I am looking to paint the front fiberglass cap on an Airstream. From the video the finish appears pretty smooth. Given good surface prep how close is a roller finish to spray painting it?
Buy a titan 440i airless. Would solve 99% of your issues. The fiberglass runs, the brush marks, etc as you can spray everything like epoxy,, oils, lacquers, and latex for showroom finish. I have two in our cabinet shop we use on production cabinets. One oil based loaded one water based loaded so it's easier to clean them not cross species mixing - but you only need one.
Not sure why but while watching you paint it made me think if ancient Greek warships, I was just waiting for you to paint the eye on the side of the bow.
Yes, your craftsmanship displayed in your first build and paint job makes it seem like you had done this many times before. Sharp as a stropped razor here, just foggy outside where I live.....
at around 10:20, you can see all sorts of red on the bare wood (where you haven't painted). But then when you're pulling the tape off the blue, it's all gone. Did it just clean up really easily or was there some "magic of television" happening here? It's killing me that you've already been out on it and we have to wait for the series to be done. :) (I guess that's what you're referring to when you discussed cleaning between coats with acetone)
So, what’s the status of the boat? Is it finished or on the back burner for now? Sure would like to see you break a bottle of champagne over the bow (well, maybe not) and get it in the water.
I've seen other people mask off the large areas first, getting close to where the edge of the paint will be, and then putting the fine line automotive tape along the paint line and over the edge of the main masking. That way, they can quickly pull the fine line tape off first before the paint dries and then pull off the rest of the masking at their leisure..
Very nice work on that paint application & it's looking like a professional job! You are so into working on that boat that you once again left UTZ out of the video.................. 🐶🐶🐕🐕
Wow, a great many differences between construction of a drift boat and a sailboat because of different load stresses. Should you ever need to plane long level surfaces like your chine log again attach a little 4" line level to an old wooden bodied plane. I've built many sailboats and have a transitional 18" plane with one epoxied in place, works wonderfully.
Used 3M blue tape ( not the sticky green tape) and similar roller as yours , with a china bristle brush and , believe it or not , Valspar Duromax 365 house paint and got superior results

I really enjoyed watching that back as well haha
That's funny..I thought the same thing the whole video.
That sounds almost like an orgasmic experience.
The paint techniques keep clear how better it bacome when you pass the brush very soft. I could see the quality improvement in the window reflections. Great job.
Was held mesmerized by your painting. Learned a little about the technique. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome glad I could help some.
Like watching Michelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel!! Great work!!
Never heard of rolling and tipping before, that's a really interesting technique and the results are awesome!
Great job, I would never have the patience you have to stick with a project this long.
this is a super fun build. love these boats and the art that go into them. can't wait to see the rest of the build and the use of it.
I paint every day and I must say watching that paint flow from brush strokes to mirror finish was super satisfying looks like you did a great job
It definitely was fun to watch on video
Part # 12: Really good info. Very complete. Thank you for talking about the little things that make a project successful.
So satisfying to watch that paint lay down. Like dipping candy. Awesome.
Haha yea it was fun watching that back
Wow that is an intense process. Thanks for the deep dive on the paint!
Very informative. It’s obvious you’ve done your homework and know your business. Thanks for the information and instructions. Very inspiring. 👍

I agree I think it looks better now. I’m glad it happened haha
Looking forward to seeing this in the water!
That’s pretty amazing. Great job and I can’t wait to see it at Johnson’s
You're doing a great job, I'm enjoying this build series!
Thanks Steve!
Great video. Wish I’d watched this before painting my boat last summer. Still needs another coat though so thanks 👍
It’s such a hard task. So easy to mess up. Mine is definitely not perfect
That's looking bloody awesome 👍 well done
Thanks Alan!
really enjoy this series
I am really looking forward to seeing the final result.

Beautiful paint work
The saga continues!
Great video. I guess I need to get back to work on my videos now lol thanks for the push. Keep up the awesome work.
Haha yea you better!
I can’t wait to see it completely finished, my goal is to one day get well enough with my woodworking to be able to build one myself.
Thanks for sharing the interesting video! That’s amazing.
Great work nice paint combo
Thank you!
Beautiful paint work. Thank you for the tips.
I got a really bad blushing on my canoe, looks like crap. It's nice to see that i can fix it one day, thx for sharing
Can't wait to see it on the water! Please post.
You are doing good. Part of the learning process is making mistakes and figuring out how to fix them. Just keep learning.
Thanks Clyde
I enjoyed the boat building project. Was there a final episode that showed the completed boat?
When you have time, could you make a basic rocking chair. Nothing to fancy but still nice looking. That would be awesome! Lots of love from Georgia
👍👍👍 Excellent work.

Wow mate the first time you smack this boat into a rock your heart might literally break!
Yup
Solution: Avoid lakes with rocks.
*laughs in florida* what rocks? LOL
Just found your channel and watched the whole series on the boat. Are there any updates since the last video? Was hoping to see the rest of the project
Took me a minute to figure out why you laid down such a large field of red only to be covered in blue. For a seamless transition, right?
John A that’s the only thing I can think of. Either color matching or trying to avoid a line somewhere without extra sanding
Yes going for a seamless transition
Awesome man!!
Thank you!
What a pro!
Looking good! 😍👌🏻👍🏻👊🏻

Thanks so much for the support rich! Glad you like the shirt!
Lookin good. Good color choices maybe a thin white stripe between the two because merica

Why not spray it on? Just wondering
Looks like you have painted many boats. Nice work!!! Cool lines on the paint layout.
Sounds like you don't pay attention to what he said in the video. I guess the mountain isn't the only thing that's foggy.
Thanks bud!
John I think he was just complementing the job by saying it looked like I had done it before.
Yes, your craftsmanship displayed in your first build and paint job makes it seem like you had done this many times before. Sharp as a stropped razor here, just foggy outside where I live.....
lets see the finished project!
Hello, is there a Part 13 to your boat build? For some reason we can't find any more videos on this beautiful build.
How’s the boat coming along? Any updates?
Hey where’s the finished boat?? I’m kinda bummed this is the last video. I know it’s a year old but I’m just seeing this now
Looking good.

Just cleaned up with some paint thinner or acetone
You do still have the construction of the entire inside of the boat to do correct? I’m not sure why you paint first. Any reason?
When finish the boat. Daamm put in the water soon man
how did it your boat turn out? I only had part 12
So, what’s the status of the boat? Is it finished or on the back burner for now? Sure would like to see you break a bottle of champagne over the bow (well, maybe not) and get it in the water.
It’s not finished but yes has had to take the back burner.
What happened to the boat? Just spent hours watching the series and was really looking forward to seeing the final product!
So sorry it’s not done yet. A big move and life has kept it on the back burning. I’m looking at it right now in my new shop. It’s hoping coming soon

do you not apply filling/fairing compound like micro-balloons etc, before painting the hull?
