    Thank you for your build video. So interesting and i guess so satisfying for you to to follow Gary's plans. I see this as a pre-amble to everyone learning skills to tackle other boats which are more complex. Congratulations!!

    Amazing! Truly so. I wouldn't have expected such a lengthy production to be so interesting, but it was, and more. A must watch for any Bearospace boat builder.

    Hey Kay, not sure when your next build is, but I enjoyed watching your video of the Emma. I'm currently building one, and it was good to see the process. I'm not super far into it, but I'm using plywood from home depot as well that was actually too thick. I could only find 5.2 mm, which is about double what Gary at bearospace recommends. Turns out, the 5.2 mm birch plywood from home depot does really well in a planer, and it seems to be pretty rugged stuff. I'll let you know how it goes when I finish accumulating materials and start building. Really like the wood so far though, thought you might like to try it. Anyway! My comment is plenty long, so I'll leave it at that!

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  3 года назад

    As I'm preparing to build a homemade wooden RC sailboat myself, I enjoyed your video and got some good tips that will come in handy on my project. One thing though... may I ask why you didn't secure your scroll saw to the work surface in some fashion?

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  Год назад

      Your not the first person to comment on that. Just lazy and it was easier to move around. It actually blew up during the video and I changed to another scroll saw and eventually sold that one. At present I have no scroll saw, but a small band saw - which also is not secured to the bench.

  • @alannewman85

    I have the plan printed now and ca't wait to hear all your various tips like using the carbon paper, I just started to watch the vid.
    Great video, fun watching you use the bench saw, really seems to me THE tool to have for this particular project.
    Bad luck with the plywood side, I imagine you just made a new one?

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  3 года назад

      Yes I did. Since this video I purchased the cheapest little band saw I could find and use it more than any other tool.

  • @alannewman85
    @alannewman85 3 года назад

    Thanks for making this video!
    What other tools would you say were a must other than the band saw?
    What glue did you use instead of the hot glue?
    I'm giving you 2 bonus points for the shirt 14:33-16:20! ;)

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  3 года назад

      Well - it is tough to cut inside pieces without a jig saw - but I intend to do so on my next boat. I used mostly 2 part epoxy and CA. Thanks for watching.

  • @Freigeist1972
    @Freigeist1972 4 года назад

    Very detailed Video. Can you please tell me which glue you used to stick the paper templates on the plywood. Also I am interested in which thickness of plywood you used for the hull. I bought the plan from Gary but there is just written door skin plywood. Greetings from Austria

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  4 года назад +2

      I used rubber cement - but that was a big mistake. I spent hours later hand rubbing it off the wood. On my next boat I used double sided scotch tape. Much nicer. The plywood was the only this stuff home dopot had and I believe it is called door skin plywood. Terrible stuff. It looks like 3 layers but the inside layer is crap and the outside layers are as this as paper. My first attempt at bending the sides of the hull around failed = one of the door skin pieces broke. I would never use it again if I could fine something better. Looks like around here (Arizona) you would have to mail order to get proper thin plywood. I fiberglassed over the hull so I don't worry about the crap plywood. Thanks for viewing the video.

    Hi, Great video. I was wondering what epoxy your using. I have "equal part" type but the one your using looks like resin and a smaller hardener.

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  4 года назад

      I also used two part equal mix stuff I got from the local grocery store. But I also used Bondo Fiberglass resin from Walmart for the frames in the hull and for glassing the outside of the hull. But I have to say I made a real mess of it. Fortunately it is inside the hull so you can't see. I failed at making nice looking fillets.

    • @iankirkham9112

  • @Freigeist1972

    Want to ask you for your opinion - do you think that the coverage with fiberglass and epoxy is necessary? Do you see any disadvantage in using just plain Boat paint?
    Best regards
    Alexander

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  4 года назад +2

      Frankly I do. Fiberglass adds a ton of strength. I would worry about a small puncture with just wood and paint. I also installed foam inside incase of a flood.

    • @MrKayFisher
      @MrKayFisher  4 года назад

      I used door skin plywood from home depot and it was terrible stuff. Basically 1 ply with the top and bottom covered with a super thin ply about the thickness of CHEAP paper. I hope never to use that stuff again but couldn't find anything thin at home depot or lowes.
