I was born in June 1977. My dad said he’d come home and my mom would be rocking me (as a baby) and listening to this song… I never heard it before. She passed away in 2021 and now I have this sweet connection to her whenever I listen to this song ❤
Years ago, when I was lucky enough to purchase my first high-end sound system, this was the first album I tried out. The sound of this orchestra gave me goosebumps like I have never had before. Claus Ogorman has been a favorite of mine ever since. His arrangements are always lush and seductive. I can see why so many singers sought him out.
- Warner Bros, 1977, produced by Tommy Lipuma. - Composed, arranged & conducted by Claus Ogerman. - Joe Sample & Ralph Grierson (kbds), John Guerin (dm), Chuck Domanico (b), Larry Bunker (perc), P. Maunu (rhythm g), David Sanborn (as), George Benson (g), Michael Brecker (ts).
I guessed George on the guitar and David on the alto sax, but i was wrong with the drummer : i thought it was Steve Gadd. My apologies to John Guerin. Thanks for posting the names of the musicians ♥
what an incredible work! hall of fame solos w michael brecker, daid sanborn, george benson. at 4:30 a burnin george benson solo and sanborn expoldes at 9:35!
Always welcome some suggestions from anyone who enjoy this piece of music I posted, the entire album has long been a favorite of mine for almost 2 and 1/2 years
I bought this album from flea market in Brussels/belgium. My admirations and feelings for it never changed. I felt in love with arrangements and general picture that ogerman made . Life is better with music like that.
Ogerman's stuff is hard to find. I'm really glad that you have the album and decided to post this mini-suite. It such a rare insight into a brilliant musical mind. Thanks!
Hello Henry, you asked for suggestions and here's mine: Bill Evans with Symphony Orchestra. Claus arranges and orchestrates - WOW! I was 18 and on the road with a band and played it everyday. Amazing work by Ogerman. That lead me to follow him and my best friend Michael Brecker wound up doing an amazing album with him as well. I recommend that work as well. My best.
music ..the hearts...souls and cosmos vibrations...righteous to see all the happy posts...ah yes the universal language...certainly for the more refined ears and tastes.....ooo la la
+nino vasev -- Yes, Weltschmerz. In this world there are a few souls who are the true barometers for the rest of humanity. Why this is so is a mystery, actually. But certainly that deep perception is a treasure to keep safe.
One of my favorite albums of all time - I remember when my dad introduced me to it, shortly after it was released. I was immediately a staunch and lifelong fan of Claus Ogerman, not least because he highlighted several of my favorite musicians, including George Benson and David Sanborn. ;-) This is one of those rare albums that captured and transfixed me from the first note to the last. Amazing stuff.
One of the most beautiful and perfectly arranged musical pieces I have had the extreme pleasure of listening to. Heard several tracks played on Sirius Jazz and I was immediately transferred to another dimension in my life. Claus was a genius not to be reckoned with. Thank you Sirius Jazz for turning me on to this talented and gifted man.
The Gershwin legacy is, if not in jeopardy, then certainly must make accommodation for another: stunning brilliance here flashing ever forward. Bravo, Ogerman.
George Benson ,David Sanborn, Joe Sample I think one of the Brecker brothers and not sure of the drummer. then of course the incomparable Claus Ogerman. Thank you Mr. LiPuma for introducing this album to me. I have owned every format it was on. Sounds as good today as it did almost 40 years ago.
I always come back to this suite whenever spring or fall seasons emerge. Guess I'm an old softy. If you like this song, I recommend Ramsey Lewis' "Legacy - Toccata/Adagio/Fugue". I love these type of jazz/classical ventures. Fantabulous post.
Thank you for responding, I absolutely love this album and recently found a very clean vinyl in Santa Monica, Ca. I have very few friends that will take the time to listen and enjoy this composition. Thank you again.
@@Shazbut0191 Like Klaus Ogerman, he has done some fabulous arrangements of other people's work. Try his arrangement of "Woodstock" from Joni Mitchell's Travelogues. The fact he arranged many of her favourite songs for her on this album speaks volumes. Listen for her line about "bombers.... turning into butterflies up above our nation" for instance. ruclips.net/video/ZEaRuuTKvyM/видео.html His own compositions are also great. Try "Esperança" from the great album Epiphany with Peter Erskine, Michael Brecker and John Abercrombie among others. Love this early piece "Say We Did" with Scofield, Lovano, Erskine et al. ruclips.net/video/JBaVN_0jxrw/видео.html Hope that helps :-)
No , not a dream , , just part of the beautiful journey music has to offer - from 74 - 84 I sat behind the mic in jazz and blues radio in Oklahoma - midnight to six , six nights a week airing all these music gems while discovering the intelligence of real artists -
seems like it now . . it's all just a misty veil of our pasts . . love to go back and spend some hopeful days with mysteries unfolding once more. . . but alas . . our time has passed . . but we can look back and reminisce . . and in our memories . . it was more beautiful.
To all the viewers of this clip plus subscribers on my channel, welcome to view the other tracks from that album I posted once on youtube but soon were banned and have to relocate here on my Vimeo page under "hgcooper", just look carefully thru the description above.
I have the uneasy feeling that Klaus has been kicked around by 'inferiors' in the recording business. Take the Columbia recording of "Lady in Satin", which gives Ray Ellis credits for "arrangements", when in fact Klaus Ogerman should have received the credits.
Ogerman probably understood the meaning of the saying:" In Order To Produce The Pearl...The Oyster Must Suffer". Isn't that how life is? The beauty we appreciate is only recognized when we know the pain suffered to produce it. RIP Claus.
whats so awsome about this is claus ogerman took a ballet by the new york ballet,i belive and turned it into a jazz redition,i believe isiaac hayes is on this too,the ballet was called gate of dreams i purchsed it in houston in 1977
Raymond Casey I played in the orchestra for the Late Cleveland Ballet. It was a ballet called "Some Times" choreographed by Dennis Nahat, originally for ABT, I believe. We enjoyed playing it.
Raymond Casey Do y'know where I can find a copy or so of this score to view and played as based off from the NY Ballet. According to Bassavino, I think its a ballet called Some Times once choreographed by Mr. Nahat.
Searched for a list of the musicians playing here but couldn't find it. Still, i'm sure that the guitar player is George Benson. My guess for the alto sax is David Sanborn, for the drums i suspect Steve Gadd. If anyone know the names of the musicians playing here : please tell us 🙏

👍💙 There was nobody better than Claus. He rips my heart out with his beautiful arrangements & compositions.
this neo classic - funk fusion of the 70s reminds me of my generation musical tastes.....
Claus Ogerman is one of our greatest living composers.

Sadly, he's gone now. Rest In Peace, Claus. You were a MASTER!!! :(
What beautiful poetry!!! Wow. Glad I came across this gem. Thank you, counselor.
Claus ogermam! so versatile, dignified, soulful and funky with an element of mystery, what an awesome combination!
One of my most cherish album in vinyl.
Me Too!
"Gate of Dreams" has been my favorite album, since 1977. It still ignites my soul. "2022"
how is this not the most popular song ever?
Phantastic piece...!
R.I.P. Claus Ogerman (April 29, 1930 - March 8, 2016)!

So beautiful 💎! The Real Know It - 1997 ♥
It's like a never-ending love story, ups and downs, dancing slowly, dancing with fast steps, having fun in the sun, a moment with the moon.
Beautiful... Wonderful... Fantastic!...❤️
Awesome!!! one of my favorite albums ever, thank you so much for posting-

Damn. I'm so glad I finally managed to run into Ogerman's productions. Mesmerizingly beautiful. Reminds me of Vince Mendoza.
Yes, exactly, reminds me of Vince Mendoza too - wonderful!!!

I really dig this music.
sure you do
That's right, and so did a few of my buddies on Facebook after I shared this on FB!
Beautiful
The 70's was a great time for music in general, and jazz in particular. Could it have all been just a dream?

Oh that's nice 👍
This was written for a jazz ballet. There was talk that it might be performed on Public television. Never saw it.
Michel Colombier's WINGS has a similar structure: mixing great orchestration with contemporary funk/jazz/pop sounds. Very eclectic, yet it works.
Agree.... it's always a great album
obrigado

wonderful :-))))
..a 1970s love scene from a movie
Mr. Cooper did you hear anything about the passing of Claus Ogerman?
That right?, never knew that.
Starts like Brother Theme from Joe Hisaishi
ghibli vibes all over this tbh
@doc2skate, on the ramsey one, is it a song or a cd?
Apollo brown - “time passed autumn” Dope track also
Ogerman died already in March of 2016, a very privat man. Read it in the "Der Spiegel"
Na ja, irgendwann ist Schluss für Alle.....
Yes It as also on the album cover about the Ballet.
Also Michael Brecker on Tenor sax
Alright I get it now, it's the song off the album Legacy from Mr. Lewis.
this reminds me of (The Thomas Crown Affair)!!
Well yeah , because the compositions of Michele LeGrand and Clause Ogerman are sexy
Y'mean the movie, that i'm not sure. I may doublecheck.
I have one of his arrangements in my book now, "Look At That Face" from Sammy's library. It's one of my favorites. Here' my live audio performance.

great- but listening to those over the decades -…. seems that all orchestral chords are still Aaron Copland's staff...
