When I was in school, the southern ocean wasn’t a thing, we weren’t taught about it. Only Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Artic
It is a thing, but it depends on the region you went to school. To my knowledge, US primary schools refer to it as the Antarctic Ocean and that's all I've ever known it by lol

+K L it is new because that area wasn't considered an ocean until 2011. Before that it was just where the Atlantic pacific and Indian oceans connect> Some people called it the antartic before that but it was still never offical reconized as an ocean. In reality there is only one ocean that is just divided into different regions
