I didn't realize that beans are cooked IN THE CAN! Maybe I'm the only one who didn't know that, but I'm so glad you mentioned it. I've recently begun cooking my own beans because I want no salt at all. Now I feel justified in spending the time doing that, since it's really easy, plus I can have delicious beans that are more tasty than canned. My instant pot has made it so easy for me. Thanks for the delicious soup recipe. I have never used barley. Maybe it's time!
Anything in a jar or a can has to be high pressure cooked or it will breed bacteria inside and poison you when you eat it..... all food. I make my own beans too but i find that they go bad quicker if i don't cook them with some salt.... as salt is a preservative .... so is sugar. That's why jam doesn't go bad..... lots of delicious sugar. Fat.... i don't know about. But it's good to have canned food on hand to eat during disasters. You can just open a can, and you have food!
