As much as I dont embrace my Greek heritage as I should. I have to admit, that Greek Easter was something really special. Almost as good as watching football all day on Thanksgiving or being a kid during Christmas
You guys are so tough on that poor girl, I thought she was good. This one has an easy task, she just has to speak- the other one had to try a bit harder
Tsureki = challah bread Whole lamb ( non smashed bones) = sacrificial Pesah lamb Eggs still in the Jewish Passover plate Greek Orthodox are preserving all the Hebrew traditions of Passover in their Christian orthodox Peshah
I am Greek and i don't even like lamb :\ These potatoes are delicious though... Also, you will never understand how good virgin olive oil and Feta taste like, until you come in Greece. And by the way, the eggs are supposed to be red. Really red :P
Koodoos Vice for yet another fascinating new munchies series! Awesome idea to show the connection and history shared by food and religion. Props to vice, munchies and Dawn O'Porter once again hope to see much more
"They have a lot of food in their religion." A remark reflecting cultural ignorance. The fact is that, like many cultures, They have a lot of religion in their food.
I really enjoyed watching your documentary and loved the fact how respectful u r towards everyone. Without being judgmental u seemed to learn different cultures.

Egg colliding tradition is also popular in AZERBAIJAN, specifically in Novruz celebration!!))) BTW if you want to get your eyes really red, then boil them with shells of red onion
I come from England, I like that there's still european ethnic neighbourhoods in New York /US cities. There's a Greek orthodox chuch/small community in my small city. My grandma used to do red eggs for easter🤔
The latino labor behind the greek pastry shop is what allows them to afford to import the ingredients necessary to keep the food culture alive: thus Mexican immigration helps preserve other cultures!
Valencia Di Atlantide: if you are asking that question, you might not live in New York City. Even most "Italia'n" restaurants in NYC use majority Mexican immigrant labor.
My wife's Portuguese neighbor used to make her an Easter challah bread in the form of a baby doll (Boiled egg in shell for the face.). She told her about the first Easter after WW2 rationing ended, which continued for much longer in parts of western Europe after the armistice than it did in other places, and how the little girls held on to their Easter dolls for that much longer that year, afraid that kind of good food would disappear again.
In my Parish we do. We don’t have a festival, everything is in English and Spirituality is more important than ethnicity. Our Parish has tripled in 3 years.
@@longhaulconvert Idk. Would you care to elaborate what does your fast entails? I honestly always facepalm little bit when Christian says about himself that he fasts which means that he eats three times a days instead of five lol. Thats not fasting. Only what Jews and Muslims are doing can be call fasting.
@@technokokos well its not about 3 or 5 meals per day and it's more about what you are allowed to eat, e.g meat or dairy aren't allowed and you can eat fish only on specific dates. Nevertheless if you really want to get technical and smart assy about it there is a type of feasting that can't be maintained for long that doesn't involve any drinking or eating and some more spiritual behavior that you ought to practice during that fasting ( I'm talking about black fasting )
2:14 Greece did not have domestic cows in most areas traditionally. Lamb would be the best tasting most tender meat that could be cooked for large religious celebrations. Usually those would be the times you eat meat, usually lentils would be the most common source of protein for Greeks historically as well as rabbit and chicken.
I always wonder about the Greek culinary. So I will try the lamb and the salad recipes, but I will change the red wine with "non-alcoholic wine". Last week I made Rumanian cooking and I'm glad because it's delicious...tasted the same with the cooking of my Rumanian friend. I hope this time I will also successful in making some Greek cuisines.
You can talk shit about my government all you'd like but there's no place like home. Our people are fantastic, they span the globe, your people are here too and i have nothing but love. Just bring your food, youll fit in fine.
Dawn is awesome, remember seeing her on the BBC back in the day. It's really nice to see her online, great job picking her up Munchies!
“She destroy my egg” that Greek dude is hilarious.
You don't eat NO meat??? that's ok I'll make Lamb.. LOL... I love Greek food!!
An excellent introduction to Greek food and Orthodoxy at the same time.
"you get drunk I'll get fat". My new motto.
I adore the Greek culture and food!
As much as I dont embrace my Greek heritage as I should. I have to admit, that Greek Easter was something really special. Almost as good as watching football all day on Thanksgiving or being a kid during Christmas
Gosh, she's so much better than that "comedian" from the Kosher Episode...

"You get drunk, I'll get fat"
Did she just propose to him? ;)
No, but what she did mean to say was "I'll get fatter."
@@charlesmills5247 That statement would require that she is already fat, which she isn't

There are Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, atheist etc Greeks. They just are not the majority.
Muslims in Greece are Albanian not Greek.

Very interesting premise for a show!
Why are you people so focused on hating the host than focussing on the food/culture..
Bc she's ruining the good food and culture
I don't really understand how people cannot like Dawn! She is brilliant.
She's a bit basic. I prefer Vice hosts who make me feel like they would definitely have hard drugs on them.
"I have eaten constantly all day." Day in the life of being Greek.
It was a great episode I missed it

Im going to embroider the phrase, "you get drunk I'll get fat." with an infinity sign. word.
