My guess for why some people think the track is a bit average for Meshuggah is that like anyone in the music space these days they dropped this to add interest to the album, rather than it being a single to get people hyped. I appreciate that as it tempers the expectations as you can only influence music so much and trying to always reinvent the wheel becomes a chore, when I'd wage a guess they just wanted to bang out a fun song to play. The track to me is still enjoyable, but I'd say it's more of a utilitarian track rather than a wow factor single like Abysmal Eye was meant for. Just my thoughts.

See: If Meshuggah tried writing an In Flames song.
I actually really appreciated the simplicity of the whole track and the structure. Tomas Haake did say in the recent interview that this album was going to have some kind of "less aggressive (which really means more straight ahead kind of like some Koloss tracks as I understood him) and less incredibly technical". I think they were going for just a good straight ahead number here and found it to succeed on that level.
Of course as Nik correctly noted, it did feel that a certain "spice" was absent; but hey, that is part of the Meshuggah deal you get with them! They are that most rare of bands that is always distinctly signature in their sound, yet they always reach to subvert our expectations and do what they haven't yet done with each of their successive works.
I remember how mind glowingly different Catch 33 and 'I' EP were to the metal community when they dropped. I think they are working from that "let's do some shit they don't think we'd do" approach at least here on this one.
It has a little feel of Nothing, or (unbelievable that I didnt catch this til now) their very FIRST album Contradictions Collapse! (Pre DEI sounded quite Metallica derivative)
As my favorite band, I felt like they weren't maybe doing what I like best of them but I really enjoyed what they were pushing for with this more straight ahead, attack mode chugging and Tomas going Tom-Tom like he wanted to do Daney Carey fills!
I think I liked this in some ways MORE than Abysmal Eye.... but I cant wait to hear Ligature Mark's most of all... that ungodly heavy crunch is my favorite, man, goddamn....
Also of note the higher dual playing and the awesome roll around 3 minutes. Didn't expect that from them!
Thanks for reading and thanks Nik for staying on it until we get IMMUTABLE! Great content as always I'm so damn pumped for this music! Its lifeblood for some of us I know

Song is good but it's missing something to just take it into the next level. I wish he gave more range in his vocals and added more vocals.
