My guess for why some people think the track is a bit average for Meshuggah is that like anyone in the music space these days they dropped this to add interest to the album, rather than it being a single to get people hyped. I appreciate that as it tempers the expectations as you can only influence music so much and trying to always reinvent the wheel becomes a chore, when I'd wage a guess they just wanted to bang out a fun song to play. The track to me is still enjoyable, but I'd say it's more of a utilitarian track rather than a wow factor single like Abysmal Eye was meant for. Just my thoughts.

Nah. That tom boom at 0:59 made me fall in love with this song, and the part that starts at 2:45 immediately make me think of Chaosphere. Just hearing new songs with that OG tone and with super heavy bass makes me ssssooo heppyyyy
These songs sound like parts of one bigger song. They don't have their own flow or like intro, build, climax, finale kind of structure you expect from a stand alone song. I think we have another Catch 33 on our hands. This song feels like an interlude for a bigger thing.

Yeah, I think same. This track does not impress me, like Born in Dissonance and whole VSOR album. I was expecting some Obzen or Koloss vibes, that was more powerful and diverse. But Catch 33 is a truly avant-garde project👽 i love it.

The Abysmal Eye had me underwhelmed, which is partly my fault, because of too high expectations, but this track is absolute great. The groove, the drumming, the sound. I WISH i know what they used for the bass sound. Its sludgy but not out of place and tight at the same time. Only wish they turned that up like 1 or 2 db.

This song is working a lot in the mixing of riffs by changing the feel of the song when you consider the one at a particular point, like they did in Combustion. This is the crazier version of that!
Meshuggah is my #1 favorite band, but I'm not sure what to think of this song. It has some really nice tones, it has a nice groove and flow to it, the sound quality and how the track is mixed is on point, but I felt like the song itself is missing something.

Exactly. This is good music for a heavy metal or djent band, but not for Meshuggah standards. I don’t think we will ever get an album like “Nothing” or “Obzen” from them, or any band again in our lifetime again. It’s disheartening and sad. One can only hope.
See: If Meshuggah tried writing an In Flames song. I actually really appreciated the simplicity of the whole track and the structure. Tomas Haake did say in the recent interview that this album was going to have some kind of "less aggressive (which really means more straight ahead kind of like some Koloss tracks as I understood him) and less incredibly technical". I think they were going for just a good straight ahead number here and found it to succeed on that level. Of course as Nik correctly noted, it did feel that a certain "spice" was absent; but hey, that is part of the Meshuggah deal you get with them! They are that most rare of bands that is always distinctly signature in their sound, yet they always reach to subvert our expectations and do what they haven't yet done with each of their successive works. I remember how mind glowingly different Catch 33 and 'I' EP were to the metal community when they dropped. I think they are working from that "let's do some shit they don't think we'd do" approach at least here on this one. It has a little feel of Nothing, or (unbelievable that I didnt catch this til now) their very FIRST album Contradictions Collapse! (Pre DEI sounded quite Metallica derivative) As my favorite band, I felt like they weren't maybe doing what I like best of them but I really enjoyed what they were pushing for with this more straight ahead, attack mode chugging and Tomas going Tom-Tom like he wanted to do Daney Carey fills! I think I liked this in some ways MORE than Abysmal Eye.... but I cant wait to hear Ligature Mark's most of all... that ungodly heavy crunch is my favorite, man, goddamn.... Also of note the higher dual playing and the awesome roll around 3 minutes. Didn't expect that from them! Thanks for reading and thanks Nik for staying on it until we get IMMUTABLE! Feels more like an album track than a single. Musically solid but didn't grab me.
