The fact that he ditched his family is terrible but, had that been the end, there would have been a tiny sliver of an excuse that “fight or flight” kicked in and he was out the door before he even realized what was happening.
The real indicator of incredible stupidity and ignorance was the fact that rather than being overwhelmed with regret and humiliation after abandoning his family in the movie theater he saw a chance to be on TV and voluntarily told his story to the world.

It's not rationalization at all. It's empathy. I truly believe that I would never, ever, ever be a coward like that, but you never know until you're in that position.
