  • “A complete orchestra should be added to this”, wrote Mozart on his copy of Bach’s motet 'Singet dem Herrn', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. He was very enthusiastic about the piece, which was performed as a surprise when he visited the Thomasschule in Leipzig, in 1789. At his request, Mozart was given a copy of it. In his account of the event ten years later, Johann Friedrich Rochlitz says that Mozart even shouted “Now there’s something you can learn from!

In 1789, 39 years after Bach's death, Mozart happened to be in Leipzig, and visited the Thomasschule. The boys choir was practicing at the time, so the cantor had them perform this piece for Mozart. Mozart went almost manic with joy, and after poring over the varied instrument and singer scores, Mozart made his famous exclamation "Now this is music from which a man can learn something!", and made Mozart a lifelong devotee of Bach's music.

    What an absolutely marvellous performance.
Perfect intonation and blend of voices and superb tone. I absolutely love the Dutch as a people (one exception being the matron at my boarding school who confiscated my hot water bottle) and this standard of singing, full of such joy and musical perfection, fills me with such a warm sense of identity and oneness with the singers.
The motets have been recorded by some eminent British Ensembles and the Trinity Cambridge version under Marlow is very fine, but cannot compare with the Netherlands 🇳🇱.

Supremely beautiful. I notice a couple of faces in there too both male and female! I'm just waiting for the results of my first singing teaching diploma. I've decided to qualify anyway if I can despite dropping out of college in Wuppertal. It's level 4 100 CATS points the old format DipABRSM in Vocal Teaching up to Grade 6 ABRSM. If I get that I'm going for the performance one as well in the new year. The ARSM. I'm really confident with it now. I did a piano masterclass at RAM recently but I got totally too nervous and my hands turned to jelly and I couldn't play at all. I used to be like that when I sang but I'm not now. I sang regularly with Daniela Bechly in her family choir and she's a former opera signer at your level. Singing with her and her mates and old Ben Vonberg Clark finally gave me the confidence at 46. I could win competitions on my day in my youth but I was so inconsistent like when I play at the moment. I think it's just a lack of experience playing 4 hands and in ensemble. I don't care if I make a mistake when I sing now but I'm terrified still as a player. I think if I'm given more masterclasses I could play better I played it perfectly when I warmed up. I couldn't play it for the life of me when he asked me and that is just psychological not musical. I was playing Minuet II from BWV 813 in C Minor. I wanna get back into Aldeburgh Voices if I get my diplomas. the result should be out next week. If I get it it's official professional status as a singer at last. I played it now not a single mistake! I played an Eb not an E and he corrected me. soundcloud.com/hugh-gregory-waldock/bwv-813-minuet-ii-with-mistake-correction?si=e272efb034a342aa83bb96fbfa4ba174&

De titel van Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied doet me trouwens denken aan mijn jeugd, toen een ik een koraal van Handel met die titel zong, helaas nauwelijks te vergelijken met dit sterk uitgewerkte motet.

My favorite of Bach's six splendid Motets.
However, I feel the tempos in the opening and concluding movements are uncomfortably *too fast.* The profuse and highly complex *contrapuntal figuration* becomes a frantic-sounding *blur* at these inappropriate and ill-considered speeds... and we are left feeling not only vaguely *unnerved,* but somehow *cheated* -- We are not allowed to savor and really appreciate all the intricate "goings-on" that the composer labored at. (In Bach's time, "Allegro" simply meant "lightness/cheerfulness," *not* "Presto Furioso.")
Nevertheless, a beautiful rendition by a superb ensemble.
The wondrous final Fugue is always a great thrill - both to sing and hear. 💥👍

All male singers were very common in the Baroque era. In most performances during that age, the soprano voices were sung by young boys.
18th century baroque had some weird tastes. The castrato singers were probably the most extreme phenomenon of that era.

@@Samplesurfer Yes, I guess that's true. Although with boys there is that crystalline quality. I'm not enjoying see the grown-up dudes singing alto and soprano lines, would much rather see a boy or a woman, no question.

Mozart visited Leipzig in 1789 and was striked when he heard Bach's " Singet dem Herrn " and asked to see more. He then copied some of the music sheets and even quoted one of Bach's composition ("Ach Gott, vom Himmel sieh darein" BWV2) inside his famous " The magic flute ".
If Mozart had been born 6 years earlier, he would have met the person from whom he took these notes

I've never understood why the modern baroque performers acting like clown, moving and waving hands like crazy people. Look at Karl Richter, von Karajan or other conductor of the past, they were stoic on the podium.

I totally agree with you and think about this a lot because I find it distracting to the music. Often I feel it is the person's ego that sneaks through. As a performer I feel it is distracting and annoying.

The Baroque period was about the "Dance" to the text of the music or the Dance style of the movement (Bourree, Courante, Gigue for example), of what kind of dance it was, which is why they use as a expression device for expressing the music in a performance atmosphere, to show where the beat was for example. Truthfully, there was very little information about how the performances during the 1600s-1700s of how music was performed, so this is probably a modern interpretation of playing music in a more period manner (even vibrato in the strings was minimally used for example for important expressive moments, however instruments like woodwinds, did not use any kind of vibrato, that was a modern invention in the 1930-40s actually). The more stoic approach is a more modern approach to playing classical music nowadays. If your barely moving to the music, your not emulating the dance of the period.
