"The Wizard of Id" is ideally suited for animation, but, like all comic strip adaptations, you have to keep true to the characters and the situations (the king's sadism, Rodney's cowardice, Bung's drunkenness, the wizard's squabbles with Blanch). Paul Winchell is an interesting vocal choice for the king.
This was originally produced for Chuck Jones' 1971-'72 Saturday morning ABC series, "CURIOSITY SHOP". It was a "one-shot", and no further cartoons in this proposed series were produced.
Interesting. The only Curiosity Shop film I'd seen before was nearly 25 years ago when I bought a 16mm print of "Toolbox Ballet" made by the Puppetoon master George Pal.
Wow I didn't know this strip was ever animated! Cool. Too bad there are no half hour specials. I also would have wanted to see Gwen. I see this has Hanna-Barbera voices Don, Paul, and Bob Holt combined with Jay Ward sound fx. Anyway cool animation!
Brant Parker worked alongside Johnny Hart of B.C. fame. They only ever did one B.C. animated film, a Christmas Special, I'm Happy to see Wizard of Id had one too
I'm a huge fan of the strip, and I never knew this existed. A pity it never went further, as I think it would have been a great series. The animation is definitely a cut above the usual TV stuff of the era, more fluid and better lip-sync. Characters look on model as well. Better than the Jim Henson pilot in my humble opinion. Thanks for posting.
So that's where the Finks MC got their jester pic from, makes sense now, and for those what i'm talking about - i'm referring the notorious motorcycle club in Australia and New Zealand.
Chuck and Abe at format films? Considering this is the same place rudy worked at, it's a funny coincidence considering Rudy directed the Road Runner shorts after Chuck got canned.
0:23 Narrator: Welcome to the kingdom of Id. 0:28 Meet the King of Id. 4:00 As you’ve guessed by now, the King is a fink. 5:15 Yes, all is well in the kingdom of Id . . . but the King is still a fink.
@@alarkhar I haven't checked my D&D/TTRPG rules lately. You're saying someone can get so drunk that magic can't touch them? If that were the case than wizards would avoid taverns at all costs and adventurers would get quests from somewhere else. But you bring up an interesting idea. I hadn't considered inebriation.

Favourite comic strip
Actually reminds me of animation used in Pink Panther series dePatie and Freling.
Besides Garfield and the Far Side, this is my favorite comic strip!

thank goodness for small favors

However Abe Levitow did work with Johnny Hart on his other creation BC on ACTION commercials and on the 1973 NBC special "The First Thanksgiving".
The animation from 0:40 to 1:03 is AMAZING
At the very least, this should have been turned into a half-hour special.
The king is a fink!
The fink is a king!
This should have been a on going show.
This is pretty awesome! I've always loved the comic strip, but I've never seen this!
Same here.
Yes it was a one off special produced by Hanna Barbera in the late 1980's called Hagar Knows Best.
The King is a Fink!!!!

Jim Henson also did it in puppet form:

"The Wizard of Id"'; man, that takes me back.

I love the wizard of id
3:55 So if the Wizard took away everyone's laughter, how did the jester chuckle?
Yea that one slipped by
Bung is full to the brim with spirit - that makes him immune from the spell.

@@SpiffyInfo it was a pun...spirit can mean both booze and enthusiasm.
@@alarkhar HAHAHA. I need some sleep. I totally missed the joke. Good one.
Rare
Happy October 31st everyone 🎃 this HAS been a real treat, for sure, totally!
Wow, first "The Wizard of ID" gets adapted into a puppet short from Jim Henson, and then an animated short produced by Chuck Jones?
Pretty good adaptation! Good they didn't make it more 'busy' than the simple original.
Johnny Marr did the original cartoon
I always kinda imagined the Wizard to have a Dick Dastardly like voice rather than The King
LOL, that's funny. I always imagined him with a "I don't care" voice.
1:21 Is it just me or does that guy sound like Tigger?
Same voice actor
Yup. It's Paul Winchell. Look for his name in the end credits.
Check mate game over 💪🏻
Sadly this was the one and only screen adaptation of the comic strip.
where can I find this on DVD ?

Low budget, huh?
Hanna Barbera?
pu!
Pathetic.
Sad thing is, these days the strip itself has become just as patheitc.
Terrible and unfunny
it does not even look like Chuck Jones made it Chuck's character designs are actually a whole lot better than this
