- In 1987, the final call of the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō was captured, a song of longing, a male’s invitation to a mate who would never come. With his death, the species became extinct, leaving only the echo of its haunting, unreciprocated cry. Inspired by this melody, Desh Gunawardena, founder of Permaculture, composed the music, while Mahela Lokuhapuarachchi penned the lyrics, encapsulating the sorrow and yearning in the bird’s final call. This song serves as a tribute to the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō, a heartfelt rememberance of a beauty now lost.
