Don't think that the worng way
Store-bought logs are normally recently cut and chopped so not dry which is probably why it was so smokey. Ty for the story and good job trying to stick it out! No one is great on their first try!

That Laugh Haunts my Dreams
I TOO threw up in the woods when I went camping! It was my first and only trip! Still better than my friend- she got a kidney infection! And while my loving Papa picked me up early the day before, she ended up driving to the hospital at like 2 in the morning because of pain. (She's fine now, we laugh about the terrible trip today).

NEW PANTS ENGAGEMENT BOOST
The backgrounds and the animation in general look super cool now that you’ve got help! This video has everything. Target balls, camping faux-pas, vomit. What more could you want

Me: what the
Look. I've been going camping for my entire life twice a year. I personally recommend the El Captain State Beach its very nice (Near LA also, about a 2 hour drive from where I live).
Here is the equipment I recommend for people staring out...
• Dark Rest tent (or Hammock, my personal choice but do research on how to hammock camp before purchasing)
• lanterns
• an Air Mattress
• Natural Fire starters (recommend Amazon to get those)
• A big sleeping bag (too small and you'll be miserable)
• warm clothing (for early morning and evening)
• Portable phone charger (for obvious reasons)
• Axe or Tomahawk (personally prefer a Tomahawk)
• Food (including... Dehydrated Hashbrowns, Eggs, Bacon, pre made pancake mix, chocolate, marshmallows, Graham Crackers honey flavor, & whatever else you want.)
• Wood (learn how to chop & feather wood, will help with fire.)
• Hand and feet warmers
That's about it, make sure you put ALL your food in your car securely before you go to sleep so the raccoon don't get it (my family once saw one steal a carton of eggs from our site and it failed immediately). Also remember to have fun, set up and take down sucks but it's pretty worth it.
If you are going camping, stay safe and follow the local weather so you're prepared for all kinds kinds of weather. Always pack for rain.
I hope this list helps.
(edit: when you go to sleep, just wear a shirt and underwear. That's it, you'll actually be warmer when you sleep. I've been doing it for years.)
(edit 2: Buy a camping stove for eggs and bacon. You can cook the other stuff over the fire. I've cooked Hot Pockets over a fire last time and they were good. Also have a kettle with you.)
(edit 3: Lighter Fluid sucks. Use an actual lighter to light the Natural Fire Starters then throw them in the fire pit then quickly put feathered wood around it, then stack bigger logs, still cut logs but bigger chunks. If the smoke is black you're doing it wrong, the smoke must be white. Also if you're going to use chips, use Lay's plain potato chips.)
(edit 4: invest in a electric generator.)
(edit 5: Bring your pillow/pillows from home. It makes a tent feel that much more cozy. Also if your gonna go camping have at least one person who has camped before.)
