Many Thanks for a very informative and useful ’how to’ guide - I was interested to watch when you were using backward and forward strokes on the ’scary sharp’ sandpaper. The recommendation is to use only backward strokes but I wanted to see if I could use forward strokes as well as backward strokes - I could and did, unfortunately the sandpaper didn’t like it much as I made several scores through the paper - obviously my technique doesn’t match yours! Thanks again for taking the trouble to show how to make a very practical sharpening station.

Very glad it was useful! I go back and forth on the sand paper because I’m lazy and don’t want to take the time 😂 my paper has been cut up a bit as well

Yes, that was also the reason as to why I tried to go backwards AND forwards.
Rather than continue to waste the sandpaper, I’ve gone back to only using pull strokes and try to contain my impatience!

Depends on how hard you are on them. I just changed them for the first time since this video

I get (approx) 40 sharpening(s) per strip. Using light pressure on the finest grits (9,3,1 & 0.3) increases longevity. Like @TheWoodenHoddyist I use the Veritas Mk 2 guides. I lift the cutting edge but leave the roller on the film when I do the forward stroke. I use 9 & 1 micron films for the day to day work. I use 30 micron film to set the secondary bevel after I have established the primary bevel on a CBN grinding wheel. I hope this was helpful.

Can you link or post the honing guide please? I’m getting frustrated by my cheap one I got from Amzn. Thank you, nice jig and video.

I can’t seem to get the link to work but it’s the veritas honing guide. They’re available at woodcraft I believe.
