    The HHO balloon "failed" because you were only making hydrogen and chlorine here. No oxygen. Most of the chlorine dissolves into the water to make hypochlorite, so you are left with a hydrogen-rich H2+Cl2 mix. If you had the 1:1 mix, that would also be hella explosive like HHO is (the tiny bubbles showed how it is).
    Also, H2+Cl2 mixtures are photosensitive, especially UV sensitive, a bright flash from a xenon flashtube may set off such mixtures!

    When I made H2 and O2 from water as a kid, I didn't make holes in the container. Instead I put the electrodes under inverted containers in the water, and attached a hose to each container to pipe it off for storage. I used insulated wire underwater and wrapped stripped ends around the graphite. I used the rectifiers out of old hair dryers to convert to DC. You can mix the gases later when you're ready for quick amputation, or mix in a very small manifold for torching off your skin or making rubies.

    Those bottles should be making a solution of Hypochlorous Acid, which partially dissociates into anionic hypochlorite. An acidic environment pushes the reaction to the left creating Chlorine gas. The bonus of using hypochlorous acid produced by a weak current in those bottles for disinfection is that it would have a neutral charge, unlike commercial Clorox bleach which has a negative charge and can repel gram-negative viruses, such as Coronavirus. That’s provided the concentration is sufficient. Note: the product made by these sorts of bottles (and the expensive one made by Toucan) has a limited effective antimicrobial shelf life of several days to a week or so at best.

    I use chlorates in pyrotechnics to the extent of various ratios of the compounds found in H3 burst charge (KClO3, charcoal, dextrin.) Due to possible ignorance and variation in components / purity, I don't intend to persuade anyone to use it. Though, I have found it to be pretty stable. I've had a small amount stored for over a year no problems. The only way I have managed to get it to ignite, apart from high heat, say from a flame, is by hammer impact. And even then, it typically takes a few strikes depending on how compressed the mixture is to begin with so that it really takes on pressure from the blow. I have used an agate mortar to grind the mixtures together (a small amount obviously) intending to get a reaction but have failed as well. The agate mortar is polished so I imagine that helps prevent a reaction, but from my experiments with it over the past year, I'm not concerned about it going off with trivial handling e.g. shaking / moving, or even throwing pyrotechnic devices. The impact pressure simply isn't there. I would not let chlorates get any where near sulfur, ammonium compounds, magnesium, dark aluminum, to name a few. Thats the biggest issue with chlorates, knowing whats "okay" to mix and what isn't. Perhaps this is what you are referring to. As for making platinum electrodes, I have been planning to try the same thing! I just need some platinum. 1g should go a long way once you have an efficient process. That platinum electrode you have is one I have been using and have over 29 days of usage on it for chlorate production at a current density of about 150ma / cm^2. It's still behaving like new. I don't have a lot of hours on perchlorates and so can't comment much on the longevity in that regime.

      Platinum is actually not the best for chlorates instead use mix metal oxide electrodes
      pH control with calcium chloride also is good

    • @Clipster15
      @Clipster15 4 года назад

      MysteriusBhoice Yeah, I suppose that is because the production to cost ratio is higher, although platinum still goes a long way. I wonder how the efficiency (as in current efficiency) plays into that. Not heard of using calcium chloride for ph. I suppose it is a slightly acidic salt that buffers the ph and is used up producing chlorates and calcium hydroxide / carbonate. I would be a little concerned about that precipitating onto the cathode reducing conducting surface area. I actually already have to clean the cathodes periodically, I assume, due to small calcium impurities in my NaCl.

    • @CatboyChemicalSociety
      @CatboyChemicalSociety 4 года назад

      @@Clipster15 CaCl2 works by precipitating out insoluble Ca(OH)2 so the pH stays at neutral while the cell runs.
      for pH control you need to run your cell hot at 65 celsius and Pt wont survive that only MMO.
      The Ca(OH)2 is ionically conductive and acts as a diaphragm membrane slowing down chlorate reduction.
      the efficiency you get is around 78-87% efficient which is without chromates.
      with seperation i get more like 70% because crystalizing out NaClO3 is a bitch!

    The research that I did suggested that low chloride levels corrode platinum electrodes. If you want to use platinum for perchlorates I'd suggest making sodium chlorate and then dissolving the NaClO3 in water and further electrolysing that. If you want to be able to go straight from chlorides to perchlorates than I'd suggest a lead dioxide anode. They can withstand the same current density is platinum (300mA/cm2) but they don't corrode with low chloride levels. But be careful cause lead dioxide is quite toxic.

    Having some experience in the plating industry I would agree that the anode is indeed probably titanium but is probably coated with other metals. In certain instances we would have to use insoluble anodes to ensure proper plate thickness on parts. This was done by fabricating anodes in various shapes out of stainless steel or titanium. However these metals do not throw current well so we had them coated by a specialty coating company, the coating and process being somewhat proprietary. I do know that it consisted in a combination of precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and iridium. This coating looks exactly like what is on your anode and given that it is functioning as an insoluble anode it's most likely that has a similar coating. We could tell when the coating was wearing off as the voltage required to produce adequate coverage would slowly increase. Very expensive stuff.

    I thought salt water electrolysis made Cl₂ and Na, the classic Chlor-Alkali process. Since you're doing it without the Hg electrode to make the amalgam, the Na immediately hydrolyzes to NaOH releasing H₂. So isn't the gas collected Cl₂ and H₂? It still should burn as Cl₂ will oxidize combustion about as well as O₂. While I once worked at a place that also once ran a chlor-alkali plant, I didn't see it run, just talked to the old operators of it and walked around the remnants of "the cell house" and traced out the Hg trench to the washing house. We also learned that given an ignition source, Cl₂ would happily oxidize organics and blow out the glass Pyrex piping. Wild times back then.

    • @Clipster15
      @Clipster15 4 года назад

      The Chlor-Alkali process prevents the the reaction products at the electrodes from mixing. With no separation or alternate ph control, chlorine reaches an equilibrium with the OH- produced whereby bleach is formed. Ideally, no gases would be released at the anode, and hydrogen at the cathode. But yes, a small amount of chlorine is released at the anode, but mostly oxygen due to the electrode not perfectly preferentially oxidizing chlorine over OH-. So indeed, as he said in bursting the balloon, a little HCl was formed (reaction of Cl2 with H2.)

      @@ElementalMaker You just fill a dime sized reservoir that's built into the cap, fill the water reservoir with about 5ml of the water you have, shake it up and press the button. The more water you want to treat the more times you press the button. I would assume the water is saturated with NaCl, but it doesn't seem to matter. The salt lasts a long time before you need to refill it. So far I haven't gotten beaver fever, so I assume I'm doing it right. I'm in Oklahoma so animal contamination is the main issue.

    Very little oxygen gets made on the anode, so your balloon is mostly filled with hydrogen and a little chlorine. There's another variant of this product that electrolysis pure water to make the quacky product 'hydrogenated' water, typically in a water bottle shape. It may use platinised or iridised anodes by the looks of it, so that may be what you want if you want an easy route to perchlorates. If you can get a hold of one, it would be interesting to test.

    They use this for swimming pools on a larger "scale". And speaking of scale...won't one electrode develop calcium deposits on it? Calcium chloride and all. I use this method to oxygenate my well water to stop the sulfur smell by killing the bacteria in the well, but i do not use salt of coarse.

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  4 года назад +2

      If you use pure water and no calcium salts your electrodes will last almost indefinitely as long as your not overpowering them causing passivation. If you only can get tap water than yes it could become an issue, but I used DI water.
