    Why is switching power supply not ok? Because of the short circuit protection? You can use riden dps5005, 5020 that is programable buck converter. You can set the amp limit and will not turn off when short is created. Also the more powerful RD6006, rd6012,.. will not turn off when short is created if you set it so. And cheap server power supply is a great and cheap option and you have a perfect power supply.

    You want a linear power supply, look at the weight. A linear power supply will have a heavy transformer where a switcher will be rather lightweight in comparison. It's going to be difficult to find new all linear supplies, better off looking for an older used power supply.

    Can a linear power supply also have ripple?

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 2 года назад +1

      They're fundamentally going to have small but nonzero ripple. Any form of rectification creates switching noise thus ripple, you're necessarily going to have that on your secondary, and there's only so much noise rejection any circuit, analogue or otherwise, is going to provide, there is always a path for a little of it to get coupled over, though for a linear regulator, that's going to be like 60-80db down, really little ripple comes through ideally. Plus the regulation noise which can also imprint on the ripple rating.

    Greatings from serbia.
    The bench power supply you modified, you can do it in better way with the fan.
    One ntc thermistor from a old PC power supply, one transistor or mosfet and one potentiometar.
    So you can choose how the fan will gonna spinning.
    When the temperature is too low, then the speed of the fan will be reduced to minimum rpms, or no spinning at all.
    When the aluminium cooler is going hotter the fan will be spinning faster and faster.
    The temperature can be regulated with the potentiometar 😂😁😜

    For microscope the stand cost more than the camera, I can zoom into anything and micro-soldering as long as I can see it with stability. I have many stands - this is important! Depending on what you buy, some microphone stands will do a lot of good, I can do everything he and others do very well that are well financed - you need a PC and at least 1080p 50x zoom camera and a very stable stand. . .. for me the stand stability was the problem - once i fixed that - bam win.

    30:35 I think basics of electronics like power supply design etc is not that hard, but you must find IC datasheets (sometimes very tricky), invest time to reverse PCB tracks etc to build the circuit. Once you have a basic schematic, usually you have the solution. But getting there is scary/error prone and you need a teacher like you patiently explaining things. I would hand out a breadboard and a few components to kids, once they play with them, they could build. Most kids just go to a shop and buy an off-shelf battery charger. You have to find the few actually want to build.
    BTW the oscillator is a very good basic circuit, but most things are monolithic IC based nowadays with a few additional components. So you go into the issue of getting a datasheet (I agree, most of them are similar so once you understand one family, you can apply that to other) and understand it. I found that less entertaining...
    Your videos are better for learning :D

    The cheap (linear) power supply I use has overcurrent protection which is indicated by a LED. Also you can clearly hear the fan ramping up and a relay engaging. So you know there is a short and also the device is protected from excessive current. I don't understand why you wouldn't want that feature.

  • @billmyette580
    @billmyette580 Год назад

    Since I cannot reply or edit my previous response, I'll add it here: In addition, I jumped in the deep end of the pool learning switch mode power supplies with a basic understanding of transistors, FETs, etc. Where your second illustration was much easier to follow, but it did take me many videos and notes on switch mode power supplies to understand how the feedback circuit affected the current draw across the main transistor and then how the optocoupler was the non-conductive way to separate out the hot and cold side of the SMPS.

    @5:18 NOT IMPLYING ANYTHING!..........Well maybe a; "BUT", ...I felt the same way for years, PAWN-SHOP TOOLS ARE AWESOME! But I had a chance to play with a Weller WXMP iron, .... it's micro size, and accuracy, was crazy! and the add-on tweezers...AWESOME! See if you can find someone that has one that you can play with for bit! It was the first time I ever ordered an expensive tool I couldn't afford!... NOW, if I can just save up the money for a used "add-on" hot-air tool for the two-port station, I can get rid of my $99usd 852D that's been working just fine for 8 years!
    Microscope arms: ALWAYS build my own, by piecing "Ergotron" parts together. Parts & pieces I find on Ebay!
    NOTE: "Wall-mounted" bases have less "shaking" than "Desk/Bench mounted" arms!
    [DISCLAIMER]--Working with crap-tools for half my/your life instills and deeply-embeds something inside your DNA that a person starting with "The Best", always working with "The Best" , ... WILL NEVER possess! It's a very valuable "thing" that stretches from "Ability" to "Wisdom" and establishes a foundation that EVERY great-character is built upon!

    I work repairing mechanical/structural stuff on vehicles most places deem to be "Un-repairable". That stuff is just normal to us here. We only ever get the hard jobs. With little(ish) prior knowledge I dived into electronics repair to keep the brain active. Always be learning & all that.
    Right off the bat, it strikes me that the same applies as applies to vehicles - there's huge skills to be learnt if you want to do the hard repairs, it's not "easy", most can't be bothered with the hard stuff & you rapidly learn that the "Experts" you thought were experts aren't really that expert in a lot of cases once you understand their subject as well or better than them.
    The last ECU that came back from the "Experts" - I knew it had burnt traces - deemed "No Faults" by them, with a large bill, pushed me to start learning electronic repair. It hasn't been long, but it has been intense - I now know when I am getting smoke blown up my behind & why. That alone is priceless. Being able to repair it yourself is the icing on the cake. I go into "Sorin" mindset now - peering down microscopes.

    Thank you for all the useful information in this video with regard to tools and electronics. As for your wife's covid, she has probably gotten it from you. It's wrong to assume there is no more covid in this world, as s lot of colds nowadays are actually covid related. Get well soon

    Lucrez la un service GSM și folosesc următoarele: stație de lipit JBC CD-2SQE (nu cred ca se nai găsesc noi, doar update-ul care se termina cu F), stație de aer cald: Quick 861DW ESD și o sursa de la Wanptek DPS3010U și își fac treaba de minune . Stația de lipit și stația de aer cald sunt de vis, le recomand la orice oră

    "is good to make videos and get bored together", that's both a very good joke and very very untrue :)
    I'm not sure if I passed the tests. Probably not. I get how some things work but others are always unclear. I recognised the second diagram, but only cause I´ve tried (and mostly failed) to fix old CRT TVs, plus your videos on power supplies, so I am familiar with those. You put any random other on screen, and I would had no clue.
    Same goes for many of the components. Even resistors as the one sensing overcurrent... very often I don´t really know how they affect the flow of current when transistors or mosftet are implied.

    The basics are your natural sensors. Sight, smell, hearing and touch. The next thing is a multimeter it doesn't matter which one cheap or expensive. A set of cheap serecurity bits and handle and a cheap soldering station. Most of all is to always keep one hand in your pocket whilst testing high voltages, as is confidance. The lack of skills and knowlwdge will come in time as will the better equipment. READ READ READ PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE on your own devices first.

    Sorrin if some 1 is just starting out on Electronics then they DONT need expensive microscopes or expensive multimeters all they need is cheap gear to start with think back to your Piano if they need a microscopes then a smart mobile phone will do with zoom and for a maltimeter a cheap 1 from amazon or Argos same with tool and soldering iron

    you need a good solder iron, I used a cheap one, and it does not melt the solder, since I'm not a pro board repaired I can't afford to spend 1000+ on the microscope, I was looking at around £400 but still too expensive for a toy to play around.

    At 30- mins, Sorin clearly explains the difference between engineering and electrical mechanics - northbridge is mechanics - beautiful mechanics. But to understand how things works and the tools as an engineer Sorin. . . . this is the whole worth of the video - understand the issue - don't just fix the symptom. . . . ..
