Hey everyone! Thanks for the support on the video so far 💜
Lots of comments about what I should be listening to, this is the casual reminder that RUclips Members get to suggest the themes for each video!! (Casual money plug cause I got bills to pay) xo
18:47 Lil dude wasn't born alone. all the skulls you can see on the ground are from all of lil' dude's dead siblings. This game is very morbid
The real reason people are suggesting is primarily because although I loved the video
I myself was immensely confused when things like Greenpath played
And- things like nightmare king wasn't played despite literally being the most popular hollow knight song
People who really know hollow knight likely would feel robbed from seeing that the actual popular songs weren't included hence the high amount of recommendations
Please could you play Hollow Knight if you haven’t yet? If not, at least listen to Grimm’s theme (it’s worth it, trust me).
Hollow Knight takes place in a dead and dying world. There are no heroes or villains, there just is. A lot of the tracks have a morose feeling.
I’d say the radiance is the closest we got to a villain
@@fishylove1821To me it’s more of an antagonist than a villain. I don’t think it’s necessarily evil, just pissed.
@@castor2880 i get where you’re coming from, but what the radiance did to the bugs of hallownest is downright villainous
@@fishylove1821
The Nightmare Heart is a villain.
@@castor2880 No.The Radiance is evil. Brainwashing thousands of people is evil.
"I really hope any in-game sounds match with the music," she says, while listening to White Palace.
The answer is yes, for literally everything except White Palace.
I love this reaction so much!
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Man the pale king really spent half the budget in saw blades
And the other half in spikes
my ears fill in the missing noise of the saws when i listen to the white palace theme
13:57 this music doesn't feel right without the constant health loosing sound and buzzsaws in the background.
Ahah😂
“Was our lil dude born alone?”
Yeah, neither of their parents showed up when they’re born 😔
It breaks my heart when folks put together a Hollow Knight OST reaction tracklist and leave out Greenpath or Soul Sanctum. You've done this poor woman a great disservice. 😢
OH MY GOD WE NEED SOUL SANCTUM
And crystal peak...
@@Literallyjustmint crystal peak? Really? 💀💀💀
In this game, Light is the enemy, and Darkness is the Hero. It's a wonderful spin on the ideas of light and dark, and I think it's shown perfectly in this OST.
Light is death in this Game but darkness isn't life, at least not traditionally. You are there and exist but there's nothing within you. No will, no dreams, no love, nothing. Just a void.
First of all, this needs a part 2. Hornet, The sealed vessel and Nightmare kings are MUST!
Second, Christopher Larkin is amazing! But so is Leina Raine who did Celeste OST. Check this one out too!
YES! Part 2 for the Knight's siblings, and both Troupe Master and Nightmare King deserve a listen, too.
Silly trans game music my beloved
@@Nikowo1610 wtf are you talking about?
@@maximelepage7664 Celeste is kinda known for being that
YES ABSOLUTELY
That "Birthplace" track gets leitmotifed into the "Sealed Vessel" track, and it absolutely brings me to tears every time. Especially when you know the story about WHY it's there, and what's happening in the fight when it comes in.
Is there gonna be a part 2? Cause trust me when I say, there's very good themes that were sadly missed here. Grimm's theme, nightmare King, pure vessel, any of the other boss themes.
I do still hope at one point we can vote on which tracks are listened to, or at least suggest
@gabern07yt97 I don't think so, cause i feel like someone would have voted for.the Grimm things
Which are the most popular hollow knight themes by a very long shot
RUclips members get to find out what the video is many days in advance and I take a good majority of my picks from their suggestions!
@@IlexEmily ah, I getcha will there be a part 2 though?
@@fed3758 if I do a part 2 it won’t be for a while!
@@IlexEmily @IlexEmily ah that's sad to hear, since I think many were curious about your thoughts on one specific theme
Nightmare king
you might want to hear more from this, i'd love a part 2 personally.
yes! more please! I love the Hollow Knight OST, it deserves all the attention, especially from people who really appreciate music.
So thematically the game is centred around three musical themes.
The first is the vessel theme, heard in the title theme "Hollow Knight" but also in "False Knight", "Broken Vessel", and "Sealed Vessel". It also pops in at various points in the area themes ("greenpath", "fungal wastes", and others)
The birthplace music is basically a torture sequence using an incomplete statement of the vessel theme.
The second important theme is that if the Pale King. It is the main nelody of "White Palace" heard in its simplest form in "The White Lady" but also appears modified as Hornet's theme (Hornet & Daughter if Hallownest)
The final theme is the Dream theme which is heard in "Dream" and quite often in "Radiance". I suspect it also form the basis of "City of Tears" and "Soul Sanctum"
At heart the story is a battle for supremacy between these three themes. At the very end of the track Sealed Vessel you will hear the post Radiance fight ending music which includes a statement of the vessel and king's themes celebrating their victory before finally the vessel theme is given a final resolution as the vessels are finally allowed to rest.
It's funny that you mention that there's no use of synths or anything modern. In fact, this entire OST was produced electronically. No actual instruments were used, just really good patches.
I'm all for a part 2! You NEED to hear some of these boss themes.
Also this is the first OST I listened to before actually having played the game.
as i was once told, "the Force is strong with these libraries"
In fact, the only piece that was actually played with real strings was never even put into the game!
When setting up this vid i did not expect Emi to listen to the FULL 5 MINUTES of city of Tears - I was pleasantly surprised and well worth it
Christopher Larkin is a musical genius I swear. And live instrument sounds fit hollow knight’s vibe so much better than synths and beep boops. It’s still midi, but the sounds used are all live instruments.
The white palace part cracks me up.
The calming music accompanied by the video of the knight staring at moving buzzsaws. What thoughts are going through it's little mind?
There has never been a better moment to say:
No thoughts, head empty
@waywander9618 you, my friend, have found the most correct use of that phrase in existence. I tip my hat to you
That “choir” in the city of tears actually starts with one of the characters singing! She sings beautifully, you should react to her if you do part two
Larkin is a genius. While Hollow Knight is one of the greatest gaming experiences ever made, it is Larkin's brilliant score that brings the world to life.
woah someone reacted to not just the boss themes, though i would love a full reaction video to like the 15 boss themes in the game lol, they’re all incredible
Speaking to the radiance theme, players tend to be getting their shit rocked during the fight so your analysis is spot on lol
This isn't the main version of City of Tears found in the game. The main version features prominent soprano vocals. This is a very nice version too. Might be a secondary version or a remake.
isn't this the in-game version you hear outdoors? I believe it's the official ost version that's different
I'm surprised you didn't listen to Hornet or Grimm. Those two are especially iconic.
I'm surprised how few of the boss themes are here. Especially the lack of Nightmare King. As beautiful as the area themes are, it would have been great if you got to hear more variety in what the soundtrack has to offer.
Tbh i'm good with that, most people go for bosses themes but for me the core of the ost it's the background ambient themes, despite the boss themes being more popular
@@diegosotomiranda4107 Oh I absolutely agree that the area themes are some of the best, I was more talking about how the boss themes bring a little more variety.
Possibly hot take:
Nightmare King isn’t as good as Grimm Troupe. Grimm Troupe has an amazing and unique sound, a cool progression, and an extremely memorable melody. Nightmare King is just loud music. Good, but nothing spectacular.
@@FrostyTheSnowPickle just loud? I have no idea what you've heard. It's the same but up an notch.
Hollow Knight is one of the few games that I consider a work of art. Everything in the game is so atmospheric, it just brings you into a world that's nothing short of haunting, sad, and beautiful.
Video games are art. Not just the ones you like
Ive loved this series so far, so many games have such good ost.
To bring up my suggestion again, I still think that Miitopia would be right up your alley. It's bright and energetic, yet can have themes that make you say "this is from a mii game?!"
It's great, I highly recommend it
Miitopia is so underrated, I love it sm
Honestly, I loved your reactions. The stunned silence is entirely appropriate. And there is a lot more musical variety available in the Hollow Knight soundtrack.
Primarily, you listened to the area themes, which are utterly fantastic, but tend to focus on the melancholy ambiance that permeates the whole game.
The boss themes, however, tend to have a lot more variation. Christopher Larkin manages to demonstrate a ridiculous mastery of musical genres, including some you wouldn't think would belong together.
I agree with the general concensus of the comments: you owe it to yourself to do a part 2 focused on the many excellent boss themes the game is known for. A couple I'll mention that I haven't seen yet are Dung Defender and Sealed Vessel
The white palace track is not complete without the screeching sound of numerous buzzsaws.
Hornet’s theme is a must listen. Sealed Vessel too. Probably the two most beloved/iconic boss themes of the game
One of my favorite games of all time with an absolutely fantastic OST!
The Birthplace song takes place during a dream sequence where you climb up the abyss the main character was born in. The song reaches new stages as you progressively climb out of that birthplace.
I don't think this ost has a single song that I don't like. Absolutely gorgeous soundtrack, and a masterpiece of a game as well :)
Royal waterways ambience:
Deepnest ambience:
City of Tears, Queens Garden and White Palace my beloved ❤
A lot of these pieces literally made us stay in awe and silence, and just try to listen to them carefully not wanting to miss a single note. I had to stop playing so many times, and just enjoy listening. Its madly good.
PS: At least half of the amazing songs from the ost are missing here btw. Might need another video, this ost is simply too good. Its actually like you listened to only 1/3 of this insanely amazing ost ! Just do the whole thing, I assure you, you will get a hell lot of views. You'll love it as most of us did!
The best theme (imo) in the game isn’t here, why
Said theme is Nightmare King
So many good themes couldnt capture them all! Also we didn't have a still loop for Nightmare King unfortunately which i felt would take away from the vid so changed the concept to more of a story from general exploration to the mood change of birthplace into Radiance :D
@@Cursed394
Nightmare King is so long anyway (5 minutes) so a loop is unnecessary imo
But even if that weren’t the case, Grimm also exists
Edit: Nightmare King actually does have a loop, it’s just built in to the main song
If this is the kind of OST you’re into, I suspect you’d enjoy many tracks from the OST of Nier: Automata. And don’t worry, shock and awe are completely normal reactions to music like this 🙃
Two more really good indie game osts I'd personally recommend are Celeste and Ori and the Blind Forest!
Both are fantastic
If you decide to do another I highly recommend Reflection, Hornet, Greenpath, Soul Sanctum, The Grimm Troupe, Nightmare King
Great video! In contrast to what some people are saying, I think you had a great mix of boss themes and ambient music - it gives you a good taste of everything the game can be!
There are many more that you will love
Also the recurring leitmotif of the main theme in most if the tracks is super fun
You should definitely do more! Grimm, sealed vessel and broken vessel are a must
I really hope for a part 2 ! There are a lot of wonderfull tracks left and it would be sad for you not to hear them :)
Your Radiance reaction was great, it just such a stuning masterpiece
Mantis lord feels like you lose a lot by not playing the fight, because it's basically a choreography and the music adds a lot for that vibe
A reaction can be shown without words, just like you said. You’ve reacted amazingly and I would’ve sat there in complete silence and awe, had I been filming a reaction video LOL
I agree with other comments. This needs a part 2. Hornet, Sealed Vessel, Nightmare King, etc..
Part 2 please! So many more great themes
it's such a beautiful soundtrack, I really hope you do a part 2 since you didn't get to any of my three favorite tracks, sealed vessel, pale court, or nightmare king grimm
White palace takes the cake imo
It's so beautiful and haunting
Of all the tracks I was really hoping to hear Sealed Vessel. It really just encapsulates the game in one final boss theme.
PLEASE do Terraria! It has such a fantastic OST, just some good ones I can think of at the top of my head:
-Overworld
-Underground
-Crimson
-Corruption
-Hallow
-Jungle
-Sandstorm
-Pretty much all the boss themes
-Frost and Pumpkin moons
-Solar Eclipse
-Martian Madness
I’m sure there’s a ton of games you want to listen to, but I promise you won’t regret Terraria!
Don't forget the calamity mod by DM DOKURO!
you forgot underground desert
The fact that you did a video on hollow knight without listening to sealed vessel is criminal. Easily the most amazing piece in the soundtrack and one that really helps set a picture for the whole game as well.
It's always a pleasure to see people react to music, specially for OST 's that are music revolving around the narrative and theme of the game
I would love to see your reaction to some of the Splatoon soundtrack, it's surprisingly varied and really interesting to listen how it changes between 1, 2 & 3, even the main themes such as Splatattack, Now or never, and of course, the heavenly melody, Calamari Inkantation
Oh yeah, I'm always down for more hollow knight! 😁
In this video you mosty reacted to area themes. They are all really good ofc but I would highly suggest listening to more combat music, especially containing the main hollow knight motif ( you should hear it to have a comparison ). This includes "broken vessel", "sealed vessel" ( the most important one ) and there's a hint of it in "false knight". There are also other bangers like "grimm", "hornet", "dung defender", "crystal peak", "nosk", "hive knight" and "soul sanctum"
The story in this game is tragic, it's all about a fallen kingdom, where a sacrifice was made to fix everything but it eventually failed. As you said, the music is pretty melancholic and emotional. I don't want to tell you too much more because it's worth experiencing yourself 👍
The game is a metroidvania, meaning it has a big world to explore, that's full of intriguing characters, challangeing bossfights and beautiful areas. You obtain new abilities that allow you to reach other areas and help you in combat and you can find different items called charms that give you other benefits like healing faster and dealing more damage. Btw hollow knight is pretty hard so if you would ever want to start a playthrough you should be prepared lol
The game is so beloved that the devs created several free dlcs ( which technically worked as updates ) and are soon to release a sequel called "hollow knight: silksong". You will be exploring a new world as an important character that first appeared in the original. We all are really excited for it :)
Ps since you recently heard the undertale ost, you should also later see deltarune's music. It's a game made by the same person which takes place in a similiar universe but has a very different story, new characters and themes. The game is devided into chapters and currently only 2/7 are out but they are already incredible 😎
Amazing video, i have a hundred suggestions to make but i just hope you keep making content, love what you’re doing thanks
if you liked the white palace, you should listen to 'the pale court'
Fantastic. This game is such a gem. The atmosphere is so serene and desolate (while somehow also being menacing and dangerous), and the music compliments the art style. It's really astonishing what Team Cherry accomplished with such a small team.
I could gush more about it, but I do not want to spoil you if you ever choose to pick it up and play it yourself. It's absolutely worth it.
20:40 - There's a video from youtuber mossbag covering the lore of this game, but I do recommend you to play it first before watching this video!
You keep apologizing for not reacting enough, but being stunned and awed is totally a reaction - the appropriate one for this OST, actually.
The birthplace music is dynamic. It changes as you progress.
I really love Hollow Knight's music. It fits the game's themes so well.. just sad and haunting
Please please PLEASE do a part two of this video! The entire soundtrack is absolutely incredible. Hornet is my favorite piece, amazing boss theme. The White Palace required me to turn down the game sound effects so there wasn't the constant buzzing of saws in my ears but that's the only area where the sound effects clash with the music. Considering you'll probably be in the White Palace a while, the tranquil music helps mitigate the frustration from the sudden difficulty spike. One of my favorite games ever, please consider giving it a chance
in the case of birthplace, it's basically a theme with a bunch of layer stacked on top of each other, and the further you go, the more layers join in. the video you watched played all the layers separately. for example, in the game, it starts with the choir, and then the violin joins in. but you heard them both separately.
also, there's two different versions of the theme, and what you heard was like a compilation of each bit of both of them, separately instead of together.
so, in the game it's much more gradual, it's not as cut-up in the game.
No Mind to Think
No Will to Break
No Voice to Cry Suffering
You should listen to the official/original soundtrack. I think nothing beats it.
Its really an experience like nothing else.
Christopher Larkin made a truly remarkable masterpiece of a soundtrack.
If I were to recommend any, my top 5 would probably be:
Hornet
Mantis Lords
Sealed Vessel
Radiance
Reflection
Edit: City of Tears, Enter Hallownest and Hollow Knight also.
"Where they born alone?"
Hint: look _very_ closely at the ground they're standing on.
I want her to listen to Grimm’s first theme and then Nightmare King so badly 😭😭 Those two just slap
All of this suffering, all of this pain and insanity, for a moth's vengeful grudge.
awesome, my suggestion became real
I love how you're getting a good gist of the overall story of the game just from what the game tells you. In a lot of ways, the game gives you exactly the same amount of info on the story as the music does
I would also recommend to you the OST of both Ori games (Ori and the blind forrest & Ori and the will of the wisps). It is really emotional and beautifull and really underlines specific scenes perfectly :)
However many Hollow Knight songs you react to, I will watch them all. Love it
yes!! hollow knight themes are so good, all hail christopher larkins
hollow knight is thematically brilliant. one of the best ambiances in gaming history.
I think the White Palace OST triggers when you take a certain path and it's like path to king's memories or secrets so I'm guessing the OST reflects his emotions or his glory idk. also for the boss battle and some of the OST, it triggers when you get to certain stage of boss fight and if you don't, it just repeats last OST part. white palace OST is also one of my favorite one because a lot of emotions are attached to it after finding out all the secrets and lore and mystery.
I'm super shocked Grimm's theme wasn't included. That's 100% your speed. I think you'd be flabbergasted
I don’t know if you do gameplay videos, or have a separate channel for that, but if you do please do try this game, your going to love it
My favorite game And my favorite ost!
Would love to see a second part, there is still a lot of awesome tracks
I love the City Of Tears... it gets me every time.
In past videos I was imagining what it would be like if I reacted to hollow knight's music is one of my favorites, but today wuuuuuuu, it's super
Would love a part 2! :D
City of tears had such a profound effect on me when I played the game 🥺
One of the best soundtracks imo, and my brother's favorite soundtrack.
If you love hollow knight's title theme you're gonna LOVE professor layton and the diabolical box's folsense theme, it has a similar style, check it out if you have the time
No Sealed Vessel, Soul Sanctum or Greenpath. This is criminal.
You should try the game too.. you will fall in love with it
This is one of 3 games I've ever bought based solely on the soundtrack. Didn't know anything about the game other than the soundtrack was Amazing. Bastion and Crypt of the Necrodancer are the other two.
Great video. I would love to see you reacting to Fran Bow OST. It's not a very known game, but has an amazing OST, one of my favorite Indie Game's OST. One day, maybe... :)
14:04 No, your character is completely mute. The sound design of White Palace is, however, marred by a certain quantity of circular saw.
18:48: "Was our little dude born alone?" Very much not, but also very yes.
Aww, sad to not see Nightmare King Grimm on here.
Watched earlier and was gonna comment but forgot, so here is my comment now~
Anyway holy crap I also have no words :OOO I don't think I even moved that much throughout the whole video, that is some amaaaazing OST 😍 and as I haven't played it either, I guess I'll go with the crowd and say part 2 pls :D I need more of this beautiful music aaaaaaa
Oh and also react to CTR Nitro Fuelled pls? 😃👉👈
New here. Looking forward to more. Recommending Nightmare king Grimm. Also watch a video of the fight with the Mantis Lords. The fight matches the music beautifully. It like a choreographed dance. I love it!
Loved the reaction, you were on point with the emotions the composer tried to convey with these pieces. You might also enjoy Resting Grounds and Grimm OSTs from this game.
This game has one of the best OSTs ever made, and it's probably only beat by Witcher 3 OST. You can also check that out too if you're interested in more of a Slavic sounding music. And Dark Souls 3, if you like orchestral sound.
I need part 2
Would love a part 2
Please do more, many great songs you've missed
If you ever plan on making a part 2, I'd say Sealed Vessel, Nightmare King and Pale Quart are top tier tracks from Hollow Knight.
Hollow Knight is a game that really does a whole lot with the musical themes...
The theme 'The Sealed Vessel' is one that honestly sticks with ya when you know where it plays and the phases contained therein!
No cost too great.
No mind to think.
No will to break.
No voice to cry suffering.
Born of god and void.
You shall seal the blinding light that plagues their dreams.
You are the vessel.
You are the hollow knight.
Do a part 2!!
