Voiceover guy is the same guy who did the Retrospectives on Gametrailers! Glad to see he is still working and doing what he does best! No clue who the guy is, but I have always liked his presentation.
Can you, remake those retrospectives again? I've always loved them... Nowadays, they are really hard to find. Idea: how about updated/remade retrospectives from the past under the Easy Allies banner? Those would be great!!! Anyway, thank you for the great review! I didn't know RUclips allowed porn to be uploaded.
surprised blood didnt handle this one, i always associate the metroid franchise with bloodworth out of all the EZA crew. But amazing review Ben you did a fantastic job.
I think MercurySteam it's a little underrated but I understand they have their flaws. They can do great games but they need better direction, someone in front that marks the right way. Look the first Lords of Shadow for example with the assistance of Kojima Productions, they did a great job, even if we can argue about that title inside the Castlevania lore or some mechanics resemblences with God of War, was overall high level stuff, like this Metroid with the direction of Takehiko Hosokawa and Yoshio Sakamoto producing. Maybe a Konami in "I don't give a fuck" mode: ON, affected the results of Lords of Shadow 2, but as I said, MercurySteam is capable of great things when they have the right people leading the development.
They lacked the most important resource when they did made there last Games, and it was TIME. Now they got time for this game and you can see that they did made an amazing game.
They have some experience with Metroidvania stuff with the Castlevania: Mirror of Fate game they did for the 3DS, which is the best in the Lords of Shadow series.
Can't wait to pick this and the amiibo up this week. Idk when I'll actually get to playing it, but Metroid is one of those series that deserves to be on the same level as Zelda and Mario. Hopefully people now put up or shut up to support this.
dengamleidiot yea what the heck Ian, you should have spoiled the whole game and showed us everything. obvious sacarasm is obvious. great job Ben, Ian and Jones!
I think the issue with the metriod encounter is that its the core of the game and virtually impossible to change or else it won't be metroid 2 anymore.
I think that way too, im guessing if they reduced the Metroid encounter raid for this game, i would be much more pissed, maby even more "FANS", then as it is supposed to be like in the ORIGINAL.
Orcbuu I loved the amount. I'm not even done yet, still have like 5 metroids to hunt, and every encounter has been fun. Yeah the very first evolution of them are easy, but the second ones on, get quite difficult. I've died several times on each secondary one, and I've quite mastered the game I'd like to think, with 13 3/4 hours played, so its not like i just dont know how to do it right lmao. I guess if your reflexes are god like and you always know when its going to be a counter attack then you may be able to finish them easier, but I loved having so many, otherwise I probably would have been done by now, which I'm so glad I'm not.
Exactly, and I think they did what could be done as best as possible to make it less repetitive. Some Metroids hide and you need to find them to get them out of their hiding place. Other Metroids you need to chase down from chamber to chamber, etc. Plus, the Zeta and Omega Metroids have certainly been made a lot more exciting.
2:15 I feel like it's REALLY important to mention here than the Scan Pulse is 100% OPTIONAL!!! Aka you never have to use it ONCE throughout the entire game if you don't want to. (I only used it for Area 1 for example). It's basically an optional cheat code for newbies & people that are so stuck they'd otherwise get frustrated.
Good job to Ben in writing the review. This sounds weird but everyone's writing style seems to be very different. I know Brandon was reading Ben's words but for this review I can actually picture Ben behind a screen typing away.
Credit where it's due, everybody slammed Yoshio Sakamoto for Metroid: Other M (a game that certainly has its issues but is hardly as bad as the overly sensitive critics think) but this is a great return to form. Hopefully Metroid Prime 4 will continue the revival in grand fashion.
Let's keep in mind that this is MercurySteam, the guys who did Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 1 and 2, and Castlevania: Mirror of Fate. Let's also acknowledge all of the crow Moore now has to eat since he doubted this game when it first got revealed at that Nintendo treehouse thing at E3.
I'm buying this for sure, but it's such a shame that it isn't on the Switch instead. I wouldn't mind it having the same graphics just up-res'ed. Bigger screen + better ergonomics would go a long way
The review fails to mention how incredibly immersive the 3D feature is. Even 12 hours into the game, I'm still blown away every time I flick that slider all the way up. The best part is that absolutely zero visual fidelity is lost when using the 3D feature.
My first metroid was super metroid back in 1995 i was 5 years old i completed until 1999 it was very hard game no internet back then didnt know english nothing to help me i wanted to quit sell it or change it but something misterious about it kept me going best decision ever. I just buy a wii and a 3ds to play MP3 Samus returns and other m i had no money to play them at their time now i do and im a big fan and offcourse i will buy dread.
This is my first time watching an Easy Allies video, I recognize the voice over. This is the same voice from the guy who used to do Gametrailers video reviews, right?
Solid review. My two cents in regards to your two biggest criticisms of the game; I agree that the scan pulse does make collecting the hidden items a little bit easier it isn't as egregious as you make it sound. I view it as a simple replacement for the map stations found in previous games. Although it revealing what blocks are destructible in a given room does simplify the puzzle aspect of the series, the franchise has always had any tile of the map reveal if there were a secret in the room anytime you had entered it for the first time. So I view it as a moot argument. However, I have mixed feelings on your point of view in regards to the Metroid battles and their lack of variety. Yes, the constant droning of the Metroid sensor is just as bad as Zelda and Pokémon's low HP gauge sound effects. It may be tedious after your fifth battle with any given form of Metroid, but the number of Metroids and their six forms are the core component of what Return of Samus was. I wholeheartedly believe that if the total number of Metroids decreased or if "new" additional forms were added into the established Metroid lifecycle; it would just be more ammunition for "hardcore fans" of the series to use to criticise Nintendo with. The game is already unnecessarily compared to relatively conservative fan games and the addition of the melee and free-aim systems, since their reveal, have been criticised by members of the gaming community. Every single alteration or addition is scrutinized and critiqued to an excessive degree. Giving the Metroids more unique behaviors and making the battles more complex throughout the game would have been the better solution, but alterations to the core structure of the original game and it's established canon would make peoples heads explode.
For some reason I said "Samus belongs to Bloodworth" out loud, after I clicked on the video...it was quiet bizarre. Just like Jojo's adventure. + Goddamnit, I really didn't feel Samus Returns before, but now I really want to paly it >_< Great review, ben and Ian! L&R
Interesting comments regarding the repetitive nature of the metroid encounters. I actually found this to be a concern when replying the original as an adult. However, after sitting with it for a while I didn't mind it. I think you could create a more tense and threatening experience by reducing the encounters or adding more, but it also helps to create a sense of mounting accomplishment as you develop into a seasoned bounty hunter.
Yes, The only critic I have heard of this game is that metroid encounters become repetitive, for me that was never an issue when playing Return of samus, means it's gonna be a 10/10 in my book tbh.
Wow, 4 and a half stars is a very high score, and I know Ben doesn't hand scores like that out lightly which makes me think there must truly be something special here... it's just too bad it's not on the Switch.
+Nintendo You see this, Yoshio Sakamoto, MercurySteam, & Metroid creators! This critic have forgiven you of your past mistakes of the last decade. He's proud of your redemption.
Are there any unique screen filling bosses (similar to Super Metroid) in this game? Or is it really just the same little Metroids (with small variations) every time?
Will buy this then cause i felt MercurySteam would miss the mark like they did with their whole Castlevania trilogy. Nintendo knows how to crack the whip right though, so it looks like any developer can become the shit.
one thing that might be good to add in your reviews; I notice you put "Reviewed on 3DS XL" then "Available on 3DS", but what if you change it to "Also available on 3DS"? looks better that way
ohhhh now I get what you mean by the 'families' part of your comments. Yeah, now those lines makes a lot more sense to me! Thanks for the clarification Blood :D
From every interview I've seen it seemed like this game was a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Mercury Steam yet MS seems to be getting all the credit? Hell the director and project overseer are both from Nintendo.
Anders Öhlund They both are damn good and even better than the other in different aspects. I recommend you to play both (And the best part is that AM2R is free); but personally, I prefer Samus Returns.
3DS is one of the Best Consoles out there with so many good games, you have to research a lot from this point on to get every good 3ds games that is out there to even KNOW its out there. GOOD LUCK
Amazing! I never knew what came of the GT crew, but I'm glad you guys are carrying on. GT reviews were always my favorite. And I'm glad I found you! I'm excited to have that sultry voice back in my life. You've definitely got a sub from me. Best of luck to y'all!
Two things i can't wrapped around Samus Return are, and i will be putting it bellow because one is a huge spoiler. The first one is the parry/counter mechanic. Before i say anything else, i'm not against parry moves in action games, they are fine, what it isn't cool for me is the godanm fact that EVERY! SINGLE! ENEMY! Shines before doing an attack. What is the fun of having a parry move and the game just winking at you the exact moment you should press the button? I find it dumb, or you have a parry and let the player learn how to propperly use it, or you don't have it at all. Second, and this is the spoiler part, read it at your own risk: The final boss against Ridley feels soo danmforced and not necessary that it just ruined a third of my fun with the game. It feels just soo out of place and unnecessary that i question the decision of putting him in this game.
AMAZING one of the best on this console! There last 3ds games had one of the best 3d effects as well and they know how to do it even better on this one :D
Not really, there's more 3DS systems out there and the install base is bigger so this is the best opportunity they have to really sell the game. Switch is getting MP4 and potentially the next 2D metroid game so don't see a problem for Switch owners.
Yes I know it is definitely a better business opportunity this way. But zelda, mario AND metroid the first year would've been awesome for Switch specifically and just as important, for me :D
I get that and that would be cool but very unlikely and just a fans dream in the end. Nintendo is smart enough to not exhaust every IP they have in less then a year into the Switch's life. That's how it works, they are leaving some for 2018, 2019 and onwards.
Now Nintendo can make more money porting it over to the switch in a year or so. Wouldn't have been able to do that if they had released simultaneously and especially not if switch version had been out first. Remember Nintendo is kinda their own biggest competitor on the handheld marked
You can dream whatever you like but that doesn't make sense considering that the Switch will have it's own Metroid game in the vein of MP4 and potentially a MP Trilogy HD port to ease potential fans in getting it. If Tanabe starts the next 2D Metroid game, that's definitely going to the Switch too. So yeah, the 3DS and there users gets there own Metroid game while the Switch and there users gets there own as well. It's a win win for everybody and Nintendo.
Voiceover guy is the same guy who did the Retrospectives on Gametrailers! Glad to see he is still working and doing what he does best! No clue who the guy is, but I have always liked his presentation.
what a time to be alive! :D
Chris Leathco This channel is like a Spiritual successor to GameTrailers
Can you, remake those retrospectives again? I've always loved them... Nowadays, they are really hard to find. Idea: how about updated/remade retrospectives from the past under the Easy Allies banner? kulitmed iirc IGN owns the GT archives which has all of that stuff on YT
His name is Brandon Jones
SAMUS IS BACK!! 2017 does not stop!
2017 you need to chill out my nigga!!
0:58 Damn, I still get goosebumps by that theme. Such a delightful reminiscence of my childhood.
surprised blood didnt handle this one, i always associate the metroid franchise with bloodworth out of all the EZA crew.
But amazing review Ben you did a fantastic job.
Samus is back!
Samus was back in 2016... with AM2R.
luckywallace REAL Samus is back!
am2r aint nothing. quit being triggered
AM2R is the last 2D Metroid. This game isn't 2D.
Personally I think AM2R is absolutely fantastic. But it's cool for folks to have different opinions. L&R
Didn't expect Mercury Steam to do a good job with this one to be honest... glad to be wrong.
I think MercurySteam it's a little underrated but I understand they have their flaws. They can do great games but they need better direction, someone in front that marks the right way. They have some experience with Metroidvania stuff with the Castlevania: Mirror of Fate game they did for the 3DS, which is the best in the Lords of Shadow series.
SpScarletSpider
I u r smoking crack! Mirrors of fate wasn't the best in the series, the first lords of shadows was smh
The completely random obscure secrets are something I DON'T miss from Super Metroid, so that's a pro as far as I'm concerned
Can't wait to pick this and the amiibo up this week. Idk when I'll actually get to playing it, but Metroid is one of those series that deserves to be on the same level as Zelda and Mario. Hopefully people now put up or shut up to support this.
Metroid is back everyone !
Great editing work, Ian!
dengamleidiot yea what the heck Ian, you should have spoiled the whole game and showed us everything. obvious sacarasm is obvious. great job Ben, Ian and Jones!
I need this game so fucking bad....
Hotel Dusk?
Community Watch No, Samus Returns
mattia berselli 8
mattia berselli i have it ordered already :) i cant wait til friday
DecimateGamer91 Nice, while you wait, play AM2R :)

OMG! Easy allies review this early? how can this be? btw great job with the review
Good job to Ben in writing the review. This sounds weird but everyone's writing style seems to be very different. I know Brandon was reading Ben's words but for this review I can actually picture Ben behind a screen typing away.
This was a very good review. One of the better ones I have seen. Nice job! Hopefully we will see this on the switch one day in higher resolution.
Can Metroid crawl in this one?
Credit where it's due, everybody slammed Yoshio Sakamoto for Metroid: Other M (a game that certainly has its issues but is hardly as bad as the overly sensitive critics think) but this is a great return to form. Hopefully Metroid Prime 4 will continue the revival in grand fashion.
He's just bad at writing dialogue as an scenario planner he's better.
Great review. I'm in
Easy Allies are the ones I truly trust to give an honest review.
Guys... Scan pulse is completely optional. Don't use it, and you'll have more challenge. It's that simple.
One of the Best reviews I've seen yet on this game!!! Great job!!! Just Subscribed!!
Just finished playing AM2R. It was nothing short of amazing. The best fan game ever made.
Isaac White it truly is.
I'm buying this for sure, but it's such a shame that it isn't on the Switch instead. I wouldn't mind it having the same graphics just up-res'ed. Bigger screen + better ergonomics would go a long way
The main benefit of having this on the 3ds is that extra screen for the map.
The stereoscopic 3D is amazing in this game, I'd hate to lose that.
Ian, GREAT editing with the titles in this one!
The review fails to mention how incredibly immersive the 3D feature is. Even 12 hours into the game, I'm still blown away every time I flick that slider all the way up. The best part is that absolutely zero visual fidelity is lost when using the 3D feature.

Been waiting 10 years for a good Metroid. The wait looks like it'll absolutely be worth it
it is SO nice to hear Brandon talking Metroid again :D
This is my first time watching an Easy Allies video, I recognize the voice over. This is the same voice from the guy who used to do Gametrailers video reviews, right?

I really enjoy how much Ben seems to love it, given his low opinion of Metroid 2. Looks great. Thanks for everything y'all do.
Let it be on 3DS. God you goddamn Switch fans. :/
Hopefully it comes to the Switch sooner than later. Haven't played this since I owned it on my OG Gameboy a lifetime ago.
Great review and I'm glad it got 4.5 stars. We finally have gotten a proper Metroid after all these years!
Interesting comments regarding the repetitive nature of the metroid encounters. I actually found this to be a concern when replying the original as an adult. However, after sitting with it for a while I didn't mind it. I hope they port this to Switch!
SeveronJ no
Switch is getting Prime 4 so no.
Charlie Brown no
they will not lol you wanna bet ?
@Mr. Flash never did foo. Lol. Leave it on 3ds
My ONLY minor quibble is them reusing the jingles from Metroid Prime here. But given how old that game is, I guess it's fair to be used too.
Wow, 4 and a half stars is a very high score, and I know Ben doesn't hand scores like that out lightly which makes me think there must truly be something special here... it's just too bad it's not on the Switch.
Bynoe I feel your pain man! it stings quite a bit but thankfully we are metriod Prime 4.
The 3DS deserves some good games too. Also, this game has been in development before the Switch was even a concept.
Jonathan Tessier it uses the circle pad to aim. Not the stylus. The touch screen has a map and an ability select on it.
You could easily remove the stylus controls and map it to a stick, that's definitely not an issue.
Bynoe he hands scores like that all the time.
The music kind of reminds me of the second Death Stranding trailer. I like it
And the exploration Queen takes back her crown.
Jet-set sam really hope Bloodstained takes it so niny gets some competition in the metroidvania market
+Nintendo
You see this, Yoshio Sakamoto, MercurySteam, & Metroid creators! This critic have forgiven you of your past mistakes of the last decade. He's proud of your redemption.
Great job on the review! Definitely have to pick this up ASAP! Keep it up! :)
Are there any unique screen filling bosses (similar to Super Metroid) in this game? Or is it really just the same little Metroids (with small variations) every time?
Hell yeah I've been waiting for this review. Now it's only a matter of time until Metroid Mania.
You guys do the best reviews!
What ever you used to capture the gameplay, it looks amazing! Finally some footage that does the game justice.
Good use of "skulking."
I got a Samus Returns ad on this video... Nice
Made by MercurySteam? That's interesting. They're the dudes that made Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
Thnxs!
Solid review Ben! Thank you so much :) #hype
1. Super
2. Prime
3. Samus Returns
TinyDancerX99 Replace SR with AM2R and it is perfect.
Gattsu Brando stop it. I see you on every Samus Returns video. People can like this game more than AM2R, stop putting that game on a pedestal
I can't wait to get this game on Friday.
Surprised Damiani didn't get this review. I thought he was the Metroid guy.
Get on that original 2D Switch Metroid, MercurySteam.
Will buy this then cause i felt MercurySteam would miss the mark like they did with their whole Castlevania trilogy. Nintendo knows how to crack the whip right though, so it looks like any developer can become the shit.
And then SUBSCRIBED CUZ I LOVE BRANDON JONES.
In a no-homo way. Seriously, I loved your reviews in GT and I'm happy you're continuing the trend here.
Gametrailers voice, is that you??
But if we beat the game in 2 hours can we see Metroid naked?
You mean Samus right? LOL
+Easy Allies LOL xD
Nintendo Shot themselves in the foot by putting this game on the 3DS instead of the Switch.
Are you guys gonna review Ys VIII? That's the other game I'm getting, 2 games the same week!
those visual glitches in the text graphics, I see you Ian
Fantastic review
i can't wait to pick this game up
So... The morph *ball* is a disc now?
one thing that might be good to add in your reviews;
I notice you put "Reviewed on 3DS XL" then "Available on 3DS", but what if you change it to "Also available on 3DS"? looks better that way
understandable, but it applies to stuff like Reviewed on PS4 pro, Available on PS4, XBOX, etc too. Just personal preference I guess
ohhhh now I get what you mean by the 'families' part of your comments. Yeah, now those lines makes a lot more sense to me! Thanks for the clarification Blood :D
best reviews on net
Is Jones done with editing reviews?
Ooh can't wait for that - hope it's going well.
How did you lose this review!
Makes sense. So we will be getting a monster hunter stories review? Looks forward to more thoughts if others play it on frametrap :)
Easy Allies thanks for the response, Blood!
Nice Review. Game looks great.
great job guys!
Who else watching this review after trailer of dread ????
This should be on switch the graphics would be awesome on switch
From every interview I've seen it seemed like this game was a collaborative effort between Nintendo and Mercury Steam yet MS seems to be getting all the credit? Hell the director and project overseer are both from Nintendo.
Does it play/run as well on the original 3ds as on the XL?
Those are identical machines except screensize, so yes.
You are thinking of the New 3DS and the New 3DS XL
I don't know the answer though
But the question that remains is... how does it stack up against AM2R?
Anders Öhlund They both are damn good and even better than the other in different aspects. I recommend you to play both (And the best part is that AM2R is free); but personally, I prefer Samus Returns.
AM2R is overrated.
that voice sounds familiar? is that the voice of GT?
Does the 3ds have other great games cause I need this game and I don't have a 3ds
the 3DS has literally hundreds of good games.
3DS is one of the Best Consoles out there with so many good games, you have to research a lot from this point on to get every good 3ds games that is out there to even KNOW its out there. GOOD LUCK
can't wait to play this on citra emulator. :)
Nintendo is killing it! and we still have Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to go before years' end! OMG my wallet
Damiani , what's better? this or AMR2 ?
There is NO BETTER, they are 2 Amazing awesome games.
knew 4.5 was coming b4 even opening the video lol
Woah woah woah. Is this the gametrailers reviewer guy??
Amazing! I never knew what came of the GT crew, but I'm glad you guys are carrying on. GT reviews were always my favorite. And I'm glad I found you! I'm excited to have that sultry voice back in my life. You've definitely got a sub from me. Best of luck to y'all!
I hope that they re-release this on switch I didn't own a 3DS
Two things i can't wrapped around Samus Return are, and i will be putting it bellow because one is a huge spoiler.
The first one is the parry/counter mechanic. Before i say anything else, i'm not against parry moves in action games, they are fine, what it isn't cool for me is the godanm fact that EVERY! SINGLE! ENEMY! Shines before doing an attack. What is the fun of having a parry move and the game just winking at you the exact moment you should press the button? I find it dumb, or you have a parry and let the player learn how to propperly use it, or you don't have it at all.
Second, and this is the spoiler part, read it at your own risk:
The final boss against Ridley feels soo danmforced and not necessary that it just ruined a third of my fun with the game. It feels just soo out of place and unnecessary that i question the decision of putting him in this game.
Wow, this is the first episode of these guys that I watched and im getting Gametrailers vibes. Was that intentional?
These are the same guys. check out their page www.easyallies.com
Glad to see you guys are alive and kicking. That made my day a little bit better :D
Wait is the one reviewing it has something to do with GameTrailers. His voice sounds familiar
Well, i guess my 3DS will have to exit its cave.
I really hope this comes to Switch once I finally buy it three years from now.
Good luck with that.
Nintendo should purchase mercury steam.
XD this review did sound to me like 3.5 so that 4.5 make me watch the video again XD
Good game Well played :D
Why can't metroid crawl?
MrThedorkknight cause morphball would be redundant
I bet Samus just likes to roll.
*triggered*
MrThedorkknight because they float? Why would they crawl if they can just fly
How is the 3D effect in this game?
AMAZING one of the best on this console! There last 3ds games had one of the best 3d effects as well and they know how to do it even better on this one :D
Sounds pretty great. Thanks for the reply.
So super Metroid remake next?
Wish they bring this game to the switch eshop 😔 my 3ds is broken 😣
Metroid >>>
This would've been a great Switch seller. What a lost opportunity. I want a proper 2D sequel to a modern console :(
Not really, there's more 3DS systems out there and the install base is bigger so this is the best opportunity they have to really sell the game.
Shame not mention of the amiibo stuff.
