I keep seeing that people are saying that Carol's version is slower than the original. She's probably doing it slower so people can understand her, to put more comedy into it, and to do her own version of the song. I personally love the original and this one.
In the interview on the DVD, Carol is very honest about the fact that she asked them to slow the song for her. When asked if she thought she could sing, her response was, "Loudly." She is doing what every entertainer SHOULD do. She is having fun doing something she loves and inviting us to have fun with her. She made it her own in a way only Carol Burnett can. Yes, it's not everyone's cup of tea. I love her and the performance. But...as is the case with the rest of us, it's only my opinion.
I lost it when she asked the singer "are you in there"
Carol puts her own spin on this fun song. Yes it's slower than usual but holds up nicely. One version doesn't have to be 'better' than another; they just offer something different. Beth Howland, the original set the frantic pace. Madeline Kahn does a terrific frantic almost deadpan interpretation. Another version I saw here on RUclips has the singer doing a very frantic crazy version. All have their merits!!! Enjoy them all!!!
Carol ruined the song for any other performer ever. She owns it and walked away with it. Ran is more like it.
Julie Andrews did this once... it would be so cool if they did it together!
this song has been done to death! Leave it to Carol to do it her way.. she has always been the queen of mimicry.. and slowing it down you can hear all the words.. and yet she found new laughs spots in it.. genius..
she's a genius I swear.....only carol could pull that off....well and if she was still with us Lucille Ball would've been hilarious to do this.
Mad props to Ruthie for keeping a straight face with Carol right there lol
I love how John flinches when Carol says "oh shut up!"
I saw the original in 1970 and NOT A WORD OF IT could be understood. I learned the words finally by repeated listening, but it is so much better for the audience to be able to catch so many quick laughs. Most versions find something fun and new and Burnett's version has a lot of wonderful inflections and many of her beloved vocal quirks. Great job!
3:07 is my favorite part especially John Barrowman's reaction when Carol Burnett screams "OH SHUT UP!!" :)
I love how she doesn't have to hit any correct notes in this song but she's hilarious and this is one of the best versions I've seen.
Carol is so good, if you watch John at the back you can see him just breaking character and enjoying Carol's performance
"are you in there" is something carol used to ask Julie all the time!
The woman is a comic genius.
Queen Carol has done it all acting singing comedy behind the movie magic making and making us love her for 90 years and counting and still making us laugh forever and always 😊👑
I love Carol Burnett to pieces. She was hysterical in this skit. I have heard many singers sing this song before but I have to give my props to Beth Howland, the original Amy. No one but no one handled that frenzied pace the way she did. She was BRILLIANT.
Proof that this woman will forever be one of the most legendary performers of all time. She is one of the reasons I pursued theatre and comedy.
me: :20 recognizes John Barrowman (the living embodiment of the fangirl in all of us) and cannot stop watching his reactions to Carol Burnett for the rest of the clip. has to watch again.
