Tds is only tax deducted at source by banks...if suppose one's income from all sources including bank interest is below basic income exemption limit ie., say 2.5 lakh ir 3 lakh rupees as the case may be, if they file income tax returns for the same ..then they will get back refund from income tax department, if tds is deducted by bank. So tds is like advance tax, but not actual tax paid to income tax department.. tax is payable only on income exceeding basic exemption from all sources of income ( which includes bank interest, which is just one source of income). Personal income tax slabs are notified by Central govt in every year financial budget passed by parliament.
