  • MJF played Elliot Schweitzer in the show Trapper John M.D., a very young intern who almost lacks emotion. His stoic demeanor causes annoyance and concern to his colleagues, and things go down further for him after making a mistake due to overworking himself. Watch until the end as he transitions into Alex P. Keaton.

The series is called Trapper John MD. This is from episode 40 (Season 2, episode 18) titled "Brainchild", released on May 17, 1981. Michael was *19 years old* here, since this was shot and released before his 20th birthday.

I knew that Trapper John was no Saint Elsewhere, But I don't think I understood the definition of melodramatic and schmaltzy till I watched this. So glad MJF was a hit in a sitcom until TV drama got more realistic.
And now that I think of it, MJF was also on Scrubs, more than once. He played Dr Kevin Casey, which is a name I have seen in the credits of ER and it always makes me wonder if there is a connection... Haven't found one yet.

I can’t remember if it was Lawrence Olivier, but when Michael J Fox was on family Ties he said he had the comedic timing of Cary Grant. Playing the straight man (meaning the guy who’s a comedian, but acts the serious one) that knew exactly how to read a line to perfect timing.
